Re: [OT] Re: [hlds_linux] To Valve - Method for stopping most IllegalCD-Key's?

2003-03-06 Thread agenthh
There are indeed keygens that do generate valid keys for Half-life
alone. You can find them at many of the miscellaneous crackz sites or
whatever. However, WON authentication doesn't usually work with them.
You just have to try a whole bunch.

I 'have' seen ones which create a key, then try auth with it against
won, and keep repeating this process untill such time as it finds valid
keys. I have heard of user getting dozens of keys this way (How true
something said on OGC forums i dont know, but it cant be ignored because
of the source)
Im sure after time these attempts get blocked, but it makes one wonder,
how many real keys have been discovered during this time.

Despite the article title, SCO clearly is looking to go after a company
with money. They won't get a billion out of Redhat, SuSE, Mandrake, et
al. It's a thin beef with IBM; It would be bloody ridiculous to make the
same argument about the other mainstream distributors. On the other
hand, it is America.

In any case, I guess this dashes my dream of running 500 instances of
HLDS on the 390 I have at the office ;-

It does detect cheats, it just doesnt tell the server. Thats why
you get code errors if you try loading it up with OGC. Im on
the UA anticheat team, I know what Im talking about.

 Jules, don't top post.

C-D does detect, but doesn't tell. It would be mint if it did tell.

From what I can gather C-D only responds to server probes. If
the HL client give errors before its joined the HL Server then
 the C-D server can't send a probe so won't get a reponse.
Skitzo - does this sound right?

Heh, yeah, you made things so much clearer with your bottom post to the

I'm worried about the consequences if SCO somehow wins the case, much
more than what happens to Big Blue. Many *nix companies are not doing
too well already, if SCO nails them, poof! And everyone knows diversity
is the spice of life... On the positive side, I'm not worried about the
Linux kernel proper. Being the distributed beast it is, with no true
controlling company (Linus doesn't count), I don't see how SCO could sue
Linux.
