God I'm so sick of these messages. You obviously don't run any other
servers for communities aside from HLDS, if you did you'd see that
Valve's input and response is *miles* ahead of most other communities
out there. As far as supporting the community Valve have consistently
come up with the goods for a game many years old they, for a very long
time, received bugger all additional income for.

Just go away Joe Null, and leave it to the people who have a clue about
the overall perspective.

Arr

Not another one

http://www.fileplanet.com/files/5/59236.shtml

Both the linux and windows servers are stand alone free download
packages

This has always been the case right from the start.

Linux is therefore not used over windows because of its free HLDS
packages.

Its used over windows due to the fact that running servers located some
300+
km away is possible.

Its also possible to have those servers running for months and years
without
a problem.

Windows just cant do that, its getting better and coming closer, but it
just cant do it.

People run hlds on linux mainly I'd say because its free, and they
cant
afford to risk having an illegal copy of windows where they are
hosting it
 at...

This is of course not the only reason, and dont get me wrong, I love
linux,
and I have many many machines with it, and I use it whenever it is
feasible.

But in all honesty, I bet there would be a lot less linux hl servers
if
you
could get windows server for free... esp lately w/ the performance
issues
 heh.

This is usually caused by log on in server.cfg instead of
autoexec.cfg. You should have log on in your autoexec.cfg. And
do NOT add +exec autoexec.cfg to your server commandline as
suggested in the halfd config file (if it still says so).

[hlds_linux] hlds 1.1.2.0 - config_hz=1000 still desirable?

2003-10-09 Thread Christoph Franke
Hello folks,

I'd like to know if the stated hlds version still benefits from a kernel
with the config_hz=1000 option in association with the sys_ticrate
parameter. I'd also like to know how to realize this setup.

I used Redhat 8.0 and copied the i686 config file from
/usr/src/linux-2.4/configs to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config, just like the
Appendix A from the Official Red Hat Linux Customization Guids says. I
altered the option and started menuconfig afterwards (I didn't find the
option within there).

After saving the config with menuconfig I have a .config.old and a
.config file. But they differ from ~39k (new) to ~44k (old), and the new
file doesn't contain this option anymore! Confused, can you help out?

Thanx in advance

Christoph

Re: [hlds_linux] After 3 years, I've had enough.

2003-10-09 Thread Alastair Grant
I bought Operation Flashpoint when it came out, intending to play it as
a replacement to Counter-Strike. Although, this too was another game
that didn't have the major bugs ironed out until 6 months after release.
It's an excellent game, albeit a bit dated now.

Valve should learn a lesson from Bohemia Interactive. Not only do they
fix bugs which are reported to them, but they add support to modding
communities where they want it. They actively post and partake in
discussions on forums.
They have also opened up the theme and ideas of OFP 2 to public
suggestion and debate. And they all speak at least two languages!
An example to all developers IMHO.

Yes, it does. And I'm feeling the same way. My only problem is that,
after playing TFC almost exclusively for almost four years, I don't
know what to replace it with. What else is out there that is similar to
TFC? I dabbled in a few war simulators and didn't really dig them. I
hate CS. Any suggestions for what I should try?

Yeah, what is a company that has had steady income from a single game for 4
years thinking, they've got to be doing something horribly wrong.

[hlds_linux] Mailing list query

2003-10-09 Thread Matt Judge
Curiosity getting the better of me, and sure to regret asking.

I don't subscribe to any other *games* mailing lists, could someone with
experience of other *games* lists inform me if they all suffer from the
immaturity this one does?
