Re: [hlds_linux] Once Again Valve Doesn't Care About Server Owners

2012-12-28 Thread Benedict Glover

 *sigh*

Why don't you try making a fix then? Here's the entire TF2 code, all 100,000
lines or so of it, now find why the item server isn't working and fix it NOW,
not later, I don't want it tested for other bugs, I don't want it put on a
release schedule, I want a fix NOW. Of course I'm not going to give you any
leads, all I can say is the item server doesn't work.

I think the point that's trying to be made in this thread is that when
running servers we shouldn't _have_ to rely on stopgaps like this. It's great
the sourcemod/alliedmods community exists for these sorts of things, but is
that really something server ops should have to end up installing Sourcemod
 and Metamod to fix?

I propose a solution to Valve: For each new cosmetic item that is added from
this date onward, they must also fix an outstanding TF2 bug or pick a
function and optimize it. TF2 would be running smoother than greased
lightning in about half a year or so, don't you think?

I have a solution for the Item Server problems that many server owners deal
with. The Item Server as of now isn't very reliable which is why i have a
Local Item Server Mod installed on my servers. Here is the link:

 http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=1747762

This will basically cache the item server of the user and when the item
server goes down, the users weapons do not. This works really well and i
dont see players complain anymore that my servers Item Server is not
working. I suggest you guys try this mod out because it
 is absolutely wonderful.

 Hello,

I'm hosting several TF2 servers, but after an update a couple of days ago,
it wouldn't update. After a clean reinstall, it updated but wouldn't start
 properly.

Seemingly everything is fine until it tries to initialize Steam libraries
 for secure Internet server:

Initializing Steam libraries for secure Internet server

 [S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; SteamAPI_IsSteamRunning() failed.

I can still join the server, but the client crashes occasionally (not only
for me). If I attempt to execute the etf2l_6v6.cfg used in competitive play,
the server crashes with this message:

 exec etf2l_6v6.cfg

 PreMinidumpCallback: updating dump comment

 Uploading dump (in-process) [proxy '']

 /tmp/dumps/crash_20120925112641_1.dmp

 success = no

error: Failed to open/read local data from file/application

Furthermore, MetaMod and SourceMod won't load.

The box is running Debian and everything worked perfectly before this issue.

 Launch-string:

 ~/srcds_l/srcds1/orangebox/srcds_run -game tf +ip 192.168.80.50 -port 5506
 +map cp_badlands +maxplayers 16 -autoupdate

The +ip command is there to fix an internal networking problem.

I scoured both the srcds.com and Steam forums to no avail. I tried a couple
of things, mainly setting rwx rights and ownership to the user running srcds
and adding the steam_appid.txt file to the orangebox directory.

OK, a little investigating reveals that this statement I made:

 * You can switch the server in and out of any matchmaking mode pool
  or
back
to any regular game mode at any time.

Is not really accurate! Sorry! If the server is EMPTY or has fewer
than 6
players, yes, there are no problems with switching --- that is true.
However, in general, switching from PvP to MvM is going to cause
   several
problems. (I believe that what would actually happen is that the
  7th,
8th,
etc. players who connect on a map change will be forced into
  spectator.
 At
any rate, we don't officially support that, so if you do it, you're
  on
your
own.) So, you should expect to segregate your servers into MvM and
   PvP.
Don't just put the MvM maps into the mapcycle file, that won't work.
(Actually, the mapcycle file is slightly different for MvM because
  you
really are cycling through missions, not the maps. Likewise, players
   can
vote to change the mission even if it's on the current map. We'll
   have
more details on all this tomorrow.)

Re: [hlds_linux] MvM and maxplayers 32

What are the chances of allowing a TF2 MvM server to start with more than 32
players?

 Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2012 15:55:49 +
Subject: [hlds_linux] MvM and maxplayers 32

A note regarding 32-player servers and MvM:

An MvM server will require about as much CPU usage as a 32-player PvP server.
However, the network utilization is significantly lower for obvious reasons.
Whether the max number of internal player slots is 6, 24 or 32, I think
you'll agree is really an internal technical detail that would not be this
much of a focal point in the discussion, in a perfect world. It is
understandable but unfortunate that currently pricing models are based on
this, because this number is equivalent to players in PvP.

Over time the smart server hosting company will bring their pricing structure
in line with whatever the underlying resource utilization constraints really
are, and whether CPU cycles or bandwidth are more scarce. I think an MvM
server will have performance characteristics somewhere between L4D and a
 32-player PvP server.

server to any one of the following maps:
mvm_decoy
mvm_mannworks
mvm_coaltown

it will use that file. Hopefully the file is self-explanatory.

Remember to add -maxplayers 32 to the command line.

tf_mm_servermode 2 to accept MvM matchmaking traffic
tf_mm_strict 1 to ONLY accept MvM traffic

Vote issues specific to MvM:

does this affect running a server? Can only Valve run Mann Co. servers? Can
any server that qualifies for matchmaking be a Mann Co. server?

When you play Mann vs. Machine on an official Mann Co. server, this is called
Mann Up Mode. Mann Up Mode allows you to earn special item rewards and track
your progress through various Missions. To enter Mann Up Mode, you must possess
a Tour of Duty Ticket.

The KS24G is really usefull to host game servers with a good average usage.
Also to sell / rent gameservers :)by a HTTP monitoring, the dedicated

15+ may be too many, I think. Or, if there is ONLY hlds servers running, it
will be ok.But, if you also have MC servers, I don't think so.
Here is, as I think, what can be the maximum on the server:5 to 10 hlds
 servers (12 max)5 MC servers as 2GO (or) 3x (2 to 3G) + 1x 10Gup to 10 TS3
Servers of 512 slots (warning; since monday, TS USA allow only 1 server by
 dedicated server)Apache2 + php + other stuffs
think to secure the server when you get it, because the default domain
(ksXX.kimsufi.com) is often scrawled by bots
If you want any help, I'm available by this mail (or) via my private, just by

I found their support to be slightly inefficient though, our server got
hacked once (one of the admins got a keylogger), and it took them several
days to get it back up, even though we called them several times, they said
it would 'be back within 24hrs' 3 times. Apart from that, everything is good.

From what I can tell on my servers it is a moving part on the map. i.e
turbine, moving walkways, etc. the Clamping is it trying to grab a
player object to launch them, kill them, etc.

Now don't take my full word on this, but that is what it seems to be.

TCP on 27000?
Anyway Rcon isn't so much of an issue as it works with the -ip command
(although others have said that is bad to use).

Make sure the TCP port is not being blocked because that is the one that

They wouldn't stop gift-spawning directly, but unless you give it to
everyone on the server, players might consider it unfair and report your
server. (So I wouldn't recommend it really).

My players are reporting not getting drops on our registered server,
which was registered way back when server registration started.

I've also had servers hang for up to a minute on startup, or need
killed and restarted, which I assume is them trying to log into the
  registration system

Nah, drops worked over night but it seems that 2-3 hours today while i
was at work, gifts were dropping but no more after that. I don't know
what is the situation now and i cannot test untill 1-2 hours from now.

All servers are shown on server browser, all have different register
  id,
all are standing good and i'm definitely not trying to abuse system,
just want to run 4 servers for players to play on and receive goodies.

Same situation with me. I have a server that's been a quickplay for
quite some time now and it's not getting items. Yet another I just

registered the day before the event is working fine.

I am having the same issue. Two servers on the same host, same IP,

One of the two was verified dropping gifts yesterday on
koth_harvest_event.

However, today post-update, it is not dropping items on
koth_harvest_event or the new koth_viaduct_event.

Both are registered and in good standing, as far as I know. The
admins of this host have not attempted any cheating or done
  anything
that I would suspect have gotten us blacklisted.

I'm not personally going to report these but what about servers that offer over
powered weapons if you pay real money? (Premium Servers (Nightteam))

I don't think we would find that abusive.

I also note that I cannot imagine that a normal player would have any reason
to report abuse against that, either.

So if I use a plugin that renames bots but does not otherwise disguise them
as real players (no ping, no steam ids in status) I should be fine?

We are going to add a combo box to the abuse reporting tool and enumerate
some categories of abuse. We hope that will help both players and agme
servers get an idea of what we consider abusive. However, those are just
examples. There will always be an other category, and there's a reason we
require the description field. The system is purposefully fuzzy.

The purpose of the in-game abuse reporter is to identify game servers where
players are not having fun, due to a game server atmosphere. This
negatively affects our game as a whole. We're not going to draw a bright
line and define precisely what is OK and what is not. If your users are
reporting a high degree of abuse, we're going to read the descriptions of
what they are saying and decide if we think it's reasonable or not.

As I said in the other post, if your players are having fun, I think you
have nothing to worry about. The purpose of this tool is locate the worst
offenses. We will not be straying into the gray area or punishing
well-intentioned game server operators who experimenting with rule changes,
or who get abuse reports just because some people don't like nocrits or
  medieval mode.

I think everybody here can understand that there is quite a difference
between purposefully concealing major rule changes (i.e. hacking the tags
that are designed to advertise those rule changes, purposefully making bots
look as if they are real players, etc), and customizing your server to
provide the experience your players want. Or locking players in place while
certain players rush around to collect the gift drops, if those players
didn't opt in to that experience.

We just want to locate game servers that are clearly abusing players. We
don't need to draw a bright line because we don't plan to go near it,
  wherever it may be.

That's a valid question - an abuse reporting system has been put in place,
without telling the users what consittutes abuse (which I think would lead
to many more false reports than not). Some guidelines (both for users and
server operators) might be beneficial, both to keep down the number of
nuisance reports, AND help the server operators to stay in compliance. It's
all well and good to say that Valve reserves the right to ban servers/IP's
for abuse, but without knowing what the rules/guidelines are, it's giving
operators an invisible line and telling us don't cross this.
