RHEL / centos giving issues too?

I didn't hear any complaint from the users... tho I never play css so can't
comment on that (we run only RHEL based systems, nothing else)

I am not familiar with that one. It looks like it is affected by

I will go checkout the cvars and see how they are set.

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds and hlds port assignment

2010-09-09 Thread Chuck Gibke
I recently had my ISP host open these ports in the firewall after a firewall
reset:

1200 UDP
27000-27020 UDP
27024-27050 TCP

These are all in-bound.
I also use 123 for NTP plus the usual ones for ssh and http.

Hope that helps

Re: [hlds_linux] l4d2: how to shutdown via cron?

2010-07-04 Thread Chuck Gibke
-You can get cron to run a script that you have in the srcds directory. I
use screen and my script (stop_css) looks like this:

/usr/bin/screen -r css -X quit

-On cron, I run this script at 5 AM everyday:

0 5 * * * /etc/rc.d/css stop

-The css file looks like this:

#! /bin/sh
#
# /etc/rc.d/css
#
# run/stop CSS via screen

export SRCDS=/gamedisk/games/halflife/srcds

echo SRCDS CS:S
case $1 in
start)
echo start
su [username] -c 'cd /gamedisk/games/halflife/srcds ; ./start_css'
/tmp/hlstartCSS.log
;;
stop)
echo stop
su [username] -c 'cd /gamedisk/games/halflife/srcds ; ./stop_css'
;;
esac

-You must be root to enter the cron command. Notice that the script switches
to a different user. This is recommended for running a game server (don't
run as root).

These start and stop scripts in rc.d are also used to start and stop the
game servers when the system reboots or shuts down. There are links in rc3.d
and rc5.d - S19css and K02css - for this purpose.

Hope that helps.

All,

Since these mutators are coming every now and then, i need to update all my

These are forks so the nicest thing to do is a shutdown, then it updates it
and done.

However, I only know that I should telnet to the fork port and type in
shutdown

Is there a easy way I can setup something in cron to issue a shutdown each

[hlds_linux] latest CS:S update - segfaults using ./steam

2010-07-01 Thread Chuck Gibke
My server runs an old version of Linux - Suse 9.0, kernel v2.4.21, 64 bit
mode, circa 2004.
The latest HLDS update tool gets the corresponding steam program (v39) and
it only segfaults.
I have been able to run prior to this but have not updated in a while (36
maybe).
I tried all the tricks about deleting the blob files in the ~/.steam
directory and even the directory itself, but to no avail.

Is there a minimum kernel level that the Orange Box version requires to run
now? Up to this point, I have really had no reason to update my OS.
Besides updating kernel OS, any other suggestions?

Re: [hlds_linux] Exit srcds

2005-11-01 Thread Chuck Gibke
The sysadmin would still have to initiate the bash script since he can
access the games user.

I use a stop_css script on my server that looks like this:
/usr/bin/screen -r css -X quit

css is the name assigned to the screen instance. This causes the server
program to exit gracefully but also closes the screen instance. It would
still require admin privileges to start back up.

..Chuck

Suse 9.0-64

Yeah, but those solutions require his sysadmin to get off his lazy butt
and grant him privileges. (Or it could just be that the sysadmin has a
strict security policy). Running a bash instance inside screen takes no
additional pain on the part of either of them.

Re: [hlds_linux] how to leave hlds running after closeing ssh

2005-07-31 Thread Chuck Gibke
I recommend HalfD for non-Source servers. While it appears that
Maelstrom
is no longer supporting it and www.halfd.org is gone, you can still view
some of the site through the Wayback Machine:

http://web.archive.org/web/20040404200749/www.halfd.org/

(and archives dated earlier are there, too.)

The download links are, of course, broken and I don't see another
location out there but I can temporarily make it available:

halfd-2.20b15.tar.gz

http://tinyurl.com/dhw7t

halfd-2.20b15.md5

http://tinyurl.com/9fxuc

I'm still using it on our DoD servers.

Insane Husayn

I still use halfd on a CS 1.6 server. On my home PC (XP), I use The
Overlord to monitor server activity - it's Windows based.

The last version that Rob Abbott (Maelstrom) released was 2.20b18. The
server-client communication has a problem with the Steam IDs when someone
is connecting. This gets the user list on the client (Overlord or hlgui)
out-of-order and you can end up applying a kick or whatever to the wrong
player.

I can make this version available if there is any interest.

I feel like I'm missing something simple and stupid. I install
hlds/linux
via steam, it installs in the normal manner. I change *nothing*. I run:

/hlds_run -game gearbox

and I get:

/hlds_run -game gearbox

Looks like there is a possible conflict between gearbox and valve (an
inconsistency anyway).
valve is the basic, un-modded game type for HL.

Looking at the steam update program, if you list the parameters:

---

/steam -xxx

WARNING: unrecognized parameter '-xxx'

-verify_all - Verify all HLDS files are up to date
-retry - Automatically retry every 30 seconds if

For example: steam -command update -game cstrike -dir /hlds -username
[EMAIL PROTECTED] -password pasSwoRd -remember_password

 version: View installed versions
 list: View available games

Optional parameters for all commands:
---

But if you try:

---
steam -command list

** 'game' options for Source DS Install:

Counter-Strike Source

** 'game' options for HL1 DS Install:

cstrike
czero
dmc
dod

---

For game, one has gearbox listed and the other has valve listed.

The hlds_run script uses valve as the default but it does not list any
game types, including gearbox. It allows gearbox as an install option
(also allows valve but doesn't list it).

I can run:

/steam -command update -game valve -dir . -username $STEAMUSER -password
$STEAMPASSWD -verify_all

This just appears to verify the contents of the existing valve directory.

I can also run:

/steam -command update -game gearbox -dir . -username $STEAMUSER -password
$STEAMPASSWD -verify_all

The gearbox version generates a new directory gearbox with maps and
stuff, like the cstrike directory for Counter-Strike. Make sure that you
have downloaded all of the game files for the gearbox mod type.

Hope that helps.

Re: [hlds_linux] %n

2004-10-20 Thread Chuck Gibke
Halfd relies on the hlds_run script, which is not available in source
servers. It reads several variables from that file and the
environment. I'm sure the halfd perl script could be edited, however
until that's done, it's not compatible.

Actually, halfd bypasses the hlds_run script (there is a big caution NOT to
use this in the config file) and determines the binaries itself
(v2.20b16-18). All you have to do is specify the SRCDS binary in the cfg
file.

However, since halfd wraps the srcds stdin/stdout, it doesn't quite
understand the new formats and, although it runs, doesn't have full
control.

 Folks:

Does halfd (http://www.halfd.org) work with CS:S? If it did then it would
be a simple matter of putting %n and any clan tags you wish in the first
section of halfd.exclude. Result: insta-ban.

Cheers,

ServerOp

I gave it a try during CSS:Beta but it had some major problems - logs are
different, status is different. The latest version, 2.20B18, does not
handle Steam IDs reliably as well.

I am afraid that Mal may not support anything new...

RE: [hlds_linux] CS:S Maps

2004-09-28 Thread Chuck Gibke
 Alfred,

We are getting less and less players on our servers by the day, we used to
run 8 servers now we run 4 and may lose 2 of these by the end of the week
as
they are not getting used.

Can we expect a release shortly ?

Mark

I don't think that you understand the concept of beta test - you are
looking for a full-blown release. That is not the case. A beta is a
semi-controlled environment to keep as much constant as possible to weed
out bugs before a full release. There IS a reason for only one map.

Beta testing requires a dedicated set of players to help find and report
bugs and provide feedback to the developers. It is NOT to fill servers. I
see a lot of empty CS:S servers now because all the players just want to
play, not help test. Once the novelty wears off - they go back to their
self-centered gaming needs.

I suggest that you wait for the full release before you worry about hosting
x number of CS:S servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] Success with HLDS on AMD64?

2004-09-28 Thread Chuck Gibke
The only HL mod that runs in full 64-bit mode is Counter-Strike - none of
the others have the 64-bit shared object (SO).

I have been running a 64-bit CS 1.6 server for well over a month (and a
test version before that) once 64-bit AdminMod and StatsMe were available.
I am running 64-bit versions of: HLDS, MetaMod 1.17.2p10, AdminMod 2.50.60,
and StatsMe 2.8.3.

I use Suse 9.0-64, although 9.1 is out with 32/64 in the same box, I have
not tried it yet.

You can run the 32-bit versions of HLDS by using the command line
parameter: -binary hldsrun_amd
That will prevent the auto-detection from cranking up the 64-bit version.
The 64-bit HLDS and the 32-bit mod SO running together DOES NOT mix - that
is why you seg fault.

Re: [hlds_linux] Success with HLDS on AMD64?

2004-09-28 Thread Chuck Gibke
How did you edit that file(hlds_run), Would it be possible for you to
either show me how you did it or give me a copy of yourhlds_run, because
nobody int he forums knows how to do it, and I've heard others ask how
to skip over the auto-detect as well. thanks so much, this would
actually solve the problem.

You don't need to edit the hlds_run script to disable auto-detect.
Just add the following to your command line: -binary hlds_amd

other binary options are hlds_amd64, hlds_i486, and hlds_i686.

(you might need to specify the local directory: -binary ./hlds_amd)

Try that and see if it works.

There is nothing wrong with the file permissions. This user had

I have read something that the -port command is NOT working at this time -
you may be out of the port range. Can you test it on 27015 and see what
happens?
