Is it possible that it is not actually a problem with the kernel? Maybe
there are some options turned on in the earlier version that you have not
chosen in the newer one? Wouldn't it be great if that turned out to be the
case and we could figure out what those options were?

Maybe you should post to the Linux Kernel people. Maybe they can help. I
guess Valve should be the one's posting to the Kernel group since they
have
the source to the game and could answers questions better.

Anyway, I hope you are correct about the Kernel version being the problem.
If you are correct Valve should be able to make progress correcting the
problem.

for most kernel races you need to first come into the system. i think
most gameserverhosts are *only* hosting gameservers & are "nacked"
regarding installed/running applications. there is not apache, php,
mysql, whatever that could give you access to the server.

all in all, the "potential downside" is lower than the benefit, since i
have no benefit, when my gameservers are empty, right?

anyway, i think this is quite off topic.

We're not using 2.5.6 for obvious reasons. We're now using Debian

for us it would be an sufficient information to know which kernel(s)
valve is using for their test machines, so that everyone could exclude
this "variable" in case of problems.

i think i'm not high-spirited to say, that most machines with
gameservers are *only* hosting gameservers. so its quite easy to "fix"
those "OS-parameters" related issues.

midround-hitches-problem.

as most of you, we have mid round hitches (lag spikes during a round,
which could also be seen via hlsw) introduced by the latest 2 (3?)
updates. i tried nearly everything, but on thing i did not try
before...and luckily this was the trick!

our machine:
- AMD64 3800+
- debian, latest stable
- kernel: 2.6.18-4-amd64 #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux

first i tried an kernelupdate to 2.6.22.1 - same lag.

luckily, we had a further machine with same hardware but older OS
running also a 24 slot server with 100tick. this machine was running the
kernel 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 (probably the standardkernel shipped with
debian 3.1?). well, this css-server runs perfectly smooth, so i tried to
downrade the kernel on the newer machine to this one.

well, long story short: that was it!
could everyone experencing the mid-round hitches try to downgrade the
kernel to 2.6.8-11? as far as i see, most ppl that postet their
kernel-version hat a kernel newer than 2.6.8-11.
note: i did *not* enable 1000HZ or preemp. everything default.

hopefully, this fixes the lags for most (or even some) of you.
feedback appreciated!

greetings from germany,
karumba

regarding my previous posts on this mailing list i would like to share
my experience with you, since i found a solution for the
midround-hitches-problem.
