If you were writing to me on my personal account, and looking for a timely
response from me personally, then I am not surprised by your frustration -
though I do most sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. This has indeed
been a difficult period for contacting me personally. We have recently
returned from tour (I don't feel any need to see Mahler 6 or Tchaikovsky 5
again any time soon) and today is the first day in more than a week when I
don't have at least two concerts (though I do have to travel to Pamplona).
I currently have 770 messages which require a personal reply waiting in my
inbox - including a number that we discovered a couple of weeks ago had been
inappropriately relegated to a junk mail folder by our email software. I
will eventually get to everyone, but I can't promise that it will be today.

However, regarding the embouchure visualizer from your order which was not
shipped with the rest (as we were awaiting a resupply from Romera) if you
faxed or otherwise contacted the South Carolina office you should have heard
from them regarding the status of that item, and I will ask them to
investigate and get back to you.

I suspect they did. Lacquer was in existence then, witness all the

2005-05-30 Thread hans
Sorry, Paul, to oppose. These lacquered Chinese Japanese
things on display in Belvedere Castle Schoenbrunn Castle
in Vienna are much different to brass wind instruments. They
are made of wood. The chinese Japanes lacquer as well as
lacquer from Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand or Indonesia is a
lacquer applicated in multi layer way, not like the sprayed
lacquer for brass wind instruments. This lacquer would have
dampen all the sound projection dramatically.

Yes, they had some sort of lacquer - for the hunting horns
bell inside. This lacquer was rather pitch, black pitch
should prevent blinding people on the other horse when
hunting on horse back.

Le Brun (Berlin) used some kind of similar lacquer for the
horns inside for a short period in the early 19th century,
but was not very successful with it, as this lacquer tended
to dissolve quickly when exposed to moist. You can imagine
the result.

This just to explain things according to documents in my
possession.

Even if they didn't have lacquer they could shine up their instruments so they
would look like todays factory fresh horns. It would be ok for a movie to show
them with a high gloss in 1900.

Speaking of horns in stage plays, Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke
has a part for a horn case, if not the horn itself. Alma's boyfriend
Roger Doremus (Doremus: is that do re mi...?) is a French horn player, and
he makes an appearance with it in act 1. His purpose here is to play the
nerd, not the horn. She rejects him early on when she discovers her heart
beating for the roguish and carnal Dr. John. That this rash act
eventually brings about her destruction doesn't help the image of the
French horn player as nerd. I stress the French in French horn here,
because that's the term in the play, and I think that French completes
the picture of Roger's nerdliness. Ask yourself - why did Williams make
this character a French horn player?

In 1986, Roger walked across the stage here in Ann Arbor with my horn
case. Not wanting my horn out of my sight all week, I replaced it with a
brick so as to give the case proper heft. The audience did not detect the
subterfuge.

I rather think horn players make efficient conductors. I've played
under quite a few and I find they understand the problems of the
players, they give cues, and can maintain a steady beat. I've served a
bit in a conducting capacity myself and if I say so myself, I enjoy it,

age, I now conduct a whole lot better than I can play the horn! Hans

very pleasantly! My personal experience supports that ex-orchestral
players make very decent conductors compared to the stick wavers who
never had any orchestral playing experience.

We will get a new music director, who´s biography says
nothing about him having studied any instrument other than
the baton ! Nobody could imagine such even in short time
past ??? He has good working attitudes, but no idea
about the instruments. You should ask the Dresden players
about the recent Salome production there .
They built up several traps, into which he ran streight on
But we had a nice cooperation (me special) with Billy
Budd (difficult page long technical solo passage - you can
camouflage a lot, if you play JUST convincing !! Old trick.)
He starts allready building up plans for his EGO with CD
productions (who will buy these CDs ?), concert tours (for
us being duty, for him extra big cheques, - the usual way, a
way to get much attention in Spain or Italy or wherever, -
sorry, I doubt that !)
But he is a working horse, has excellent manners,
demanding but friendly, But all this does not bother me
much, Just until 2007 After that, as extra hired
player to fill the vacancy until they find the replacement
for me, . But I can finish the contract every month
.
Just the money drives me then . Not for me, but for
my children, will get plenty enough as pension cheque.

2005-05-30 Thread Wilbert Kimple

I've held back as long as I can, but no more Mister
nice guy.

I am a horn player AND a conductor, and proud of
it.

In fact, I enjoy the conducting more than the
playing, but God has been kind, and at age 59 I can
still pop out those high e's above the staff. I'm
good to the bottom of the horn, too. I play first
in two local orchestras and one community band. I
also play first in the area's local professional
summer band, and have for more than 25 years.

From what people tell me, I'm an excellent
conductor. In fact, last month I was rehired for
next season in front of the orchestra at our dress
rehearsal for the final concert of this season. I
not only got a standing ovation from the orchestra,
but our audience at that concert was the largest in
the seventeen year history of the orchestra. Well
over 1,000 people. (Pat myself on back, here).

I also have been an arranger for more than thirty
years, along with the various orchestras and bands
I have conducted during that time. I've even
conducted at IHS workshops. (Oh horror of
horrors!)

So.What's the deal? I know my craft(s),
people like what I do, and I'm well paid for it.

If it's the truth, you're not braggin'

[Hornlist] More hornist conductors

2005-05-30 Thread Richard V. West
Listers:

I can think of a couple of others, under whom I've played: Edouard Forner, who
conducted the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for a time, studied in Vienna. Horn
with Gottfried von Freiberg and conducting with Hans Swarzowsky. Also Richard
Dunn, who conducted several recordings during the LP days of works featuring
horns. Two I recall offhand: a Musical Heritage recording of music for horns
and voices including Schubert (Nachtgesang im Wald), Schumann, and
Mendelssohn, plus others. Another, I think on Kapp records, of concerti for
solo and multiple horns by Barsanti, Telemann, etc. that included James
Stagliano among the players (Richard told me they essentially sight-read the
recording session).

Whoops, just thought of another one: J. Richard (Robert?) Johnson (hope I'm
remembering his name correctly), who was briefly principal horn of the New York
Philharmonic, conducted a number of records (some now on CDs) of the complete
Mozart serenades and divertimenti.

I agree with Hans and Walt Kimple that being a horn player gives a conductor a
lot of insight into practical orchestral possibilities that conductors who come
to the orchestra from piano or with no instrumental background at all (except
theory and orchestration books) often lack.

[Hornlist] Mouthpiece boosters

2005-05-30 Thread Larry Jellison
Anyone use the Denis Wick mouthpiece booster? What
does it do for you that you like?

Anyone experiment with using a bolt nut on the
mouthpiece stem as a booster? I have tried a few
different sizes and weights of nuts and find a 3/8
medium sized nut, placed to clear the lower 3/4 of
stem, works to provide increased slotting, more high
harmonics, better high range response, and faster
overall response. One technique to adjust the
degree of effect is to place 2 or 3 layers of
transparent (Scotch) tape on the mouthpiece stem where
the nut will be screwed on. For less weight effect or
to tune the effect, back off on screwing the nut
tight to the mouthpiece. The tape provides a cushion
or buffer between the mouthpiece and the nut. The
tape also prevents the nut from leaving thread marks
on the mouthpiece.

The down side of the weight is possibly too much
slotting and some instability in the mid range, too
bright of tone, and just general different response of
the horn in subtle ways. My guess is that the weight
could work to help with some of the undesirable
effects of a large throated belled horns.

RE: [Hornlist] PING: Looking for David Thompson...

2005-05-30 Thread Loren
As a Thompson Edition dealer, I currently have one of the Thompson
visualizers in my stock which I will gladly send out at the regular Thompson
price.

I would also like to hear from David off-list regarding some
undelivered merchandise

Re: [Hornlist] Conductors

2005-05-30 Thread Carl Bangs
I frequently cross over to the dark side and it has made me a better
hornist.
