RE: [Hornlist] IHS 2006
Yes, Shanna, this is really the question, why South Africa ? I have not found any answer to it so far nor did I hear anything about great horn activity there. Yes, it is great safari time there during this time of the year. The symposium is just a year ahead. For those with enough cash in their pocket or a nice bank account, there is a good occasion to do some safari-ng after or before the symposium, so the long travel time makes some more sense. But be aware of a certain political instability. But still, I cannot see a similar reason, why IHS goes to South Africa like we have been in Beijing. But there is a large horn community in China. How about in South Africa ? Any further information would be most welcome surely. Or, are we just going global ? I would like to go, but we have the opera festival running until July 31st and I definitely cannot escape for the last ten days of the festival as it is Zubi´s last festival here he will conduct all of his operas. May be, there will be a last minute chance decision . A nice summer to everybody. I´m going up into higher altitude this year (was at 4.000 last year at Chinese-Tibetan border) to Mt.Everest Base Camp (5.300 mts) and Rhino Tiger Safari-ng in the jungle of Nepal (Chitwan National Park) . Silkroad (part of it) early spring 2006 So the pocket is also a deciding factor for the additional S.A. trip Will try to blow Tibetan horn at Rompugh monastery (5.050 mts) ... Let you know about the result ... Horn should rather sound like a children trumpet at this altitude If successful, you will see it at my page ... Thanks everyone for your input. So far the two best responses have been either an abbreviation for Forzando or a French term Franchement which means frankly or straight out. Shanna Hollich [EMAIL PROTECTED] AOL IM: rhinos for jesus I met the fellow who is putting the thing together at Tuscaloosa. He is really nice and enthusiastic but admitted that there weren't a lot of horn players in South Africa. He has a lot of plans, including outings in that very scenic and interesting place. I don't know that I will be able to justify the expense but if I can, I will go. I think this falls under the heading of outreach and development of the society. I hope it works out. What is of more concern to me is the status of 2007. If it goes to Europe as rumored, that will mean no International Symposium here until 2008. RE: [Hornlist] South Africa
There is a tradition of having conventions in interesting travel destinations, e.g., a bunch of American doctors getting together in China just because they want to go there and have it be tax-deductible. Nothing wrong with that, IMHO. The only problem is if the location causes people who would otherwise go not to, and in greater numbers than the destination attracts. Tough to know without taking a survey of the members. -S- -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] du] On Behalf Of Wendell Rider Sent: Monday, July 25, 2005 1:00 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] South Africa On Jul 25, 2005, at 10:00 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This may be an odd question, or one without a clear answer, but... why South Africa? [Hornlist] Re: Horn Digest, Vol 31, Issue 28
I'm planning on going...my sister lives in Cape Town so this is a great excuse for a visit. Airfare is expensive, but South African Airlines is very good IMHO I have heard that safaris can be expensive. However the exchange rate is in our favour in the US so general cost of living expenses are very reasonable. If you like wine don't forget to check out the winelands in Paarl and Stellenbosch just outside Cape Town. Any South african hornists out there want to chime in ?
