[Hornlist] alphorn dimensions

2009-07-14 Thread James Maddrey
Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions for making an alphorn,
key of F sharp of key of F.

The length from the venturi of the mouthpiece to the flare of the bell?
The diameter of the bell? The length of the bell?
The thickness of the wall or sides of the main yube?

Where would I find the working drawings and directions for making?

I am thinking of making a standard size alphorn. I understand it takes
around 82 hours. I have a completely equiped shop.

I have already made a square alphorn 8 feet long. It sounds pretty good,
a little on the muffled side, but all of the notes are there.

I have been searching for this information but no luck.

Thanks for any information.

I found interesting and challenging.

Unisonal Scales Chords Rhythmic Studies for Military Bands

I've had this book since about 1940 or 1941   ( price:  .75 cents}

Complete Method or the French Horn
by Oscar Franz
This book, as the title says is complete, starts with the history
of the horn then to elementary rudiments, exercises for the natural
horn,

the hand horn and exercises, then on up to more advanced studies.
I've had this book since the early 50s and still use use it for a

I once read about a science teacher assigning a problem to his class.
The problem was to design a case or package to have a hen egg
dropped from third story window to the side walk below without
damage to the egg. Two students solved the problem.
Perhaps instead off getting an engineer to do the job, give the job to
high school students to protect the horn.
Just a thought.

Re: [Hornlist] Music Dictionary Recommendation

2008-11-26 Thread James Maddrey
Hans, when I read...your common sense ask the conductor. I
remembered that
our band ran across the term islancio in a piece we were playing.
When asked the
meaning, the conductor admitted he had never heard of the term. None of
the members,

including three other conductor members, knew.

Reading your I decided to do a little research and went to Google
typing islancio then search.

Google's first listing was - [It., impetuous]

A directive for a musician to perform a specific passage in an
impetuous manner. This term is typically
used with the term 'con' (with) as in con islancio or with
impetuousness.

[Hornlist] Seashore Test

When I was in Grammar School, my mother wanted me to take violin
lessons. To do so I would have to take the Seashore Test. We moved out

Since then I have always wondered what the Seashore Test was and is it
still in use? I have never heard of it since.

To heck with the violin. I have been playing the horn since high school
in 1939.

[Hornlist] Opinion

2008-06-05 Thread James Maddrey

Martin had a good suggestion --- no hassle return

When my horn teacher and a student decide which make and model number,
the teacher orders
three of the same make and model. They then work with the three for a
week or more
and decide which of the three is best for the student and then return
the other two.

It seems that there are no two of the same model that are exactly
alike, some are better

than others.

Just another idea when buying a horn.

Hello, All.

I have an interesting (and somewhat embarrassing) story to tell. I am
a senior at the local high school, and tonight was my final concert.
One of the songs we played was an adaptation of the Lord of the Rings
Symphony by Johan De Meij. At the beginning of the piece (the
Gandalf section) my horn decided it didn't like me. As I was playing
a solo, my third valve slide on the F horn slipped out and fell with a
clatter to the stage floor. I kept playing, though my mind was racing.
I couldn't get the slide again until the end of that section. I was
mortified. Has this sort of thing ever happened to one of you?

[Hornlist] Damrosch

2007-12-19 Thread James Maddrey

John Dutton's recent Horn List email mentioned Damrosch.
That brought back memories of Grammar school in the late twentys
or early thirties when the whole school went to the auditorium every
Friday to hear Walter Damrosch's radio program. The school then owned
1 radio, 1 record player (78 rpm) and 1 35mm record player.

In Damrosch's programs he would have several players play a few bars
so that we could identify different instruments by their sound.
That's when I fell in love with the sound of the horn.

[Hornlist] My instrument is full of water

2005-05-31 Thread james maddrey
I am glad to see that that little gadget at the low place in the horn is
called a water key instead of a spit valve.

Spit valves are found on trumpets and trombones.

Nobody has mentioned the variation in the amount of water. Obviously, the
playing time is one cause. Playing in an air conditioned room will cause
more condensation than a heated room. Playing outdoors in the winter time
will keep you busy emptying water. I find that playing outdoors in very
humid weather will produce more condensation.

Back in September 1940, our national guard unit (Thirtieth Infantry
Division) was activated into federal service. I was in a regimental band.
One of our duties was to play revile parade - AT 0430 hrs. in the morning.
We soon resigned ourselves to that duty. All went well until one late
December morning we formed up in the street and began playing and marching.
Talk about cold! Talk about condensation, it happened. Within a hundred
feet the trombones stopped playing. Within fifty feet the trumpets stopped,
then the horns stopped then the baritones then bass horns. The band
continued down the street to the music of some very out of tune clarinets
and the thump of loose drumheads.

The colonel heard of our unusual music and not liking it cancelled revile
parade. He had learned a lesson that many brass players learned for
the first time. That is

You can't empty frozen condensate through a water key.

To remove the rim from the MP, try the method I use to remove metal parts
that have been put together with a shrink fit or otherwise too tight

Place the stem of the MP in ice water until it will cool no more.
Remove, turn the assembly upside down and dip ONLY the rim in very hot
water.

That procedure will cause the stem to shrink and the rim to expand
thus loosening the fit. Now unscrew rim.
