Re: [Hornlist] Beta Blockers -

2006-08-25 Thread stuart womble
If I might add one thought... Beta Blockers do not
make you play better so they wouldn't really be a
performance enhancing drug. The only thing that I
can think of that makes you perform better is practice
and preparation.

Stuart

BTW many professional athletes use Beta Blockers and I
havent seen a Congressional hearing on the legalities
of that.

Regarding William Botte's concern that beta
 blockers
may be performance enhancing drugs similar to drug
enhancing drugs used by athletes, consider the
 facts
that beta blockers lower blood pressure and reduce
 the
rate of the pulse. Reducing blood pressure and
reducing the rate of the heart beat reduce the
 body's
ability to perform. Strength and endurance are
reduced. Yes, nervousness can be reduced by these
drugs, but beta blockers are actually performance
  dis-enhancers in the parameters considered
 important
  to athletes.

I take a beta blocker to lower blood pressure, but
 I
reduce the dose or delay taking the beta blocker if
 I
have a heavy rehearsal or concert ahead of me due
 to
  the debilitating effects described above.

The Prof. is right. You are probably putting too much
air in the horn. Another thing to do would be stop
concentrating on the problem. Too much thinking
causes problems like an air leak or a double buzz,
etc.

Lately I've developed a slight air leak in the left
 side of
my embouchure. I've never had this problem before
 (probably
showed up about two months ago). I'm a student and
currently spend quite a bit of time with my face to
 the horn
every day, so I thought maybe I had injured myself
 (I'd
heard such things can be symptoms). So I took a few
 days
off from playing, but felt no improvement when I
 went back
to the horn. It doesn't seem to seriously affect my
 playing
(yet), but I'd like to eradicate this problem while
 it's
still relatively young. Anyone have any
 suggestions? It's
really annoying. Seems that no matter how hard I
concentrate on creating a good air seal, quite a bit
 manages
to get out. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Hornlist] Conn 10Ds and 11Ds again!

2003-11-09 Thread stuart womble
Ive only played one 10D that I liked out of the
several that I ive tried. They seem to be very
tight instead of free blowing. Ive never gotten a
chance to pick from several of them at once, but Im
sure that if you could do that you would find a good
one (much like all Conns). Beware of quality control
on the horns as well Ive picked two straight out of
the case from the factory that had the f tube going
into the first valve broken free. Dont be too worried
about the way a horn looks. Find one that plays well.
Actually buy a good used horn and spend the rest of
the money on lessons and recordings.

Good luck looking

 those few replies)! Im
seriously thinkking of buying one. What is the
instuments FEEL to you when playing?
What is the sound and tone? DO you like it or does
it seem a little edgy and
metallic, or bland? I need to know your oppinnions
 good or BAD.
They finally got them in a store down here.
 They got an 11DRS, a 10DRS
and an 8DYS. I tried them outand
 well, they look very pretty
(etched valve caps and nice colors and ring for
 screw bell.) butthe
playing doesnt seem to match the looks. At least to
me. but maybe the acoustics of
the room were bad (it was a very small room about
 12x12 filled with percusion
merchandise in rackslike timpani heads and such,
so only about 7x 5 was
open space.)) Or maybe its just me, and i suck at
 playing. I compared those horns
with my school Holton H180, and i noticed my H180
 was heavier than those
horns, even the 8DYS. It seemed that the
H180...I CANT PUT MY FINGER ON IT! My
H180 plays different from the Conns! But i dont know
how to explain it if its
for better or worse. The Conns seemeed to sound
 somewhat mettalic (but it
could have just been acustics.) The sales girl told
me the horn needed to be
broken in so that the horn could sound better or
to get the valves broken in. Im
goin to have my lesson teacher try them out and see
 what she thinks. But does
ANYONE have experience with these horns? Even if
 you tried them out for
like a couple of minutes thats still fine. I just
 want everyones oppinions.
Maybe i have to get used to them bieng Geyer wraps
(I want a geyer wrap, but even
the 8DYS had similar playing qualities.). Could all
 3 horns have been
lemons? Supposedly they were shipped in from
Oklahoma and that they showcased them
there and had them played in a professional
 symphony.
EVERYONES OPINION IS APRECCIATED. Reply, you
 know you want to.

Re: [Hornlist] Timbre trill

2003-09-02 Thread stuart womble
I would assume the timbre trill would be much like
those in Berio's Requies. I would suggest playing the
high G# on th B horn trilling between 2 and 2-3. The
difference in fingerings will give a change in sound
on the same note. As for that solo, good luck. I
would personally talk to the composer (or conductor if
you cant get to the composer), you can only help
him/her by explaining that it is not ideal for the
horn. Hope this helps

This is a rip up to a g sharp with trill written
over it. Parenthetically he has placed a g sharp
beside it. Can someone advise me as to exactly how
 this should be played?

In addition, another movement has a very slow
(eighth note = 63) horn solo over the string
section. It begins with a low g sharp below the
staff and meanders its way up melodically, in a five
bar stretch, up to a high C sharp above the staff.
I'm panicking! Any (kind) advise regarding
this? (Other than shoot the composer) Is this a
reasonable request? The composer is an organist I
understand and I think played trumpet at some time
 in his musical career.

If you are enjoying the Heiden, look for his horn
quartet and play it with some friends. Also check out
Hindemith's Sonata in F. I'm sure you will hear some
similarities between the Heiden and Hindemith Sonatas,
esp. since Heiden was a student of Hindemith. Have

 whether you might have any

Anyone? This is the first Heiden I have played. I am

Does the 2nd movement melody remind anyone else of

Re: [Hornlist] Baumann on Philips

They are all out of print. You can still find a cd on
the Eloquence label in Europe that has the Gliere
concerto, Dukas Villanelle, Charbrier, and Pokorny
Concerto with ASMF I believe. Eloquence is a budget
label from Universal Classics which now owns DG,
Decca/London, and Phillips. You can find a lot of
great older recordings on Eloquence with such
orchestras as Berlin, Vienna, Chicago, London, etc.
Good Luck Hunting.

I've been searching both on the Philips website
amd a general search on Tower Records, but all

taken these recordings out of production?
I'm looking specifically for the recordings he
made with the Academy of St. Martin's with Iona
 Brown conducting.
If they are not are there any record archive
sites that exist that might provide used copies
 or backstock?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
