[Hornlist] WALTER LAWSON
To all members of the hornlist: Today was the funeral service for our esteemed colleague, Walter Lawson. Yesterday I contacted Heidi Vogel (Executive Secretary of the IHS) and asked her to present to the IHS advisory board my request to form a Walter Lawson Memorial Scholarship. Heidi agreed to present this proposal to the Advisory board at the IHS Convention in Switzerland in July. Once Heidi informs me that the Board has approved this proposal (and I cannot foresee any reason why they would not do so), I will post on this list that it has been accepted, and where anyone who wishes to contribute to this scholarship fund should send their contribution. While this is just a small gesture of our appreciation, it is the very least we can do in memory of our colleague and friend who contributed so much to so many of us. [Hornlist] Walter Lawson
I first played with Walter Lawson in 1956, at a summer band concert in Baltimore. Many times I rode with him to IHS workshops. The understanding was that Walter would drive, but I had to stay awake. We always talked about the old days and our mutual acquaintances. When he talked about the intricacies of horn making and design, I didn't understand half of what he was saying. It was enough just to hear him talk about it. I visited Walter when he was in the hospital in Hagerstown, and at the nursing home in Boonsboro two weeks before he died. He was physically frail, but in conversation he was the same old Walter that I had known for over 50 years. He indicated that he had lost some of his taste and that the food at the nursing home was OK, but that he would love to have some good spaghetti. I excused myself and proceeded to the Red Byrd, and returned with a big plate of freshly made spaghetti and meat sauce. He said it was wonderful. When I left he was a happy man. I am pleased to have that last memory of him. Phil Hooks ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Walter Lawson memories
I was very sad to hear of Walter's passing. Everyone that ever met him knows that he was an outstanding gentleman. I first met him at a Horn Workshop that we had at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV in the early 70's. I learned so much from him about horn acoustics; knowledge that I have passed on to my students over many years. One vivid memory was during his presentation, he was showing off a new horn case. He put a brand new Alexander in the case and threw it across the room at a brick wall to he horror of the entire audience. He seemed to get a kick out of that stunt. My son, Marc, finally got to meet him last year shortly before the workshop was closed and moved to New England. I was happy that he got to meet one of the great legends of the horn world. We will all miss him very much, but his legacy will live on in the friends he made and the wonderful instruments, mouthpieces, and leadpipes he produced over the years. Hey Walter, maybe with you up there, the angels will quit honking on those nasty trumpets and play the most Godly instrument: THE CORNO! [Hornlist] Walter Lawson
We have lost a good, very good friend of our trade and a true gentleman. Walter Lawson made me a tool to prepare the leadpipe to fit for the American mouthpieces, but he never charged me anything for that. RIP , Walter !
