RE: [Hornlist] airline security again
But you need the card box to send the horn back again. Cut bell horns are perfect for the air travel. They just issued new rules for Europe today: Carry on luggage must fit into following measures (in cms) : 56 x 45 x 25 maximum (that is like the old rule, which rarely has been used) (for inches divide by 2.5 or multiply by 4 & divide by 10). Musical instruments bigger than that measures are allowed & are the exception as well as cameras, but they must pass inspection (2 - 5 minutes). You problem and as well as in many other countries is it, that airline personell has rarely any idea what you are talking about when you ask them regarding a "French Horn". Schools have detoriated nearly everywhere. We all are blaming ourselves permanently. Greetings Hans PS: Who had his Stradivarius or Guanerius transported as checked luggage ? To receive it as a puzzle of split old wood ??? Or the horn as the new brand "dentohorn". == -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pandolfi, Orlando Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 12:39 PM To: The Horn List Subject: RE: [Hornlist] airline security again True, Hans. It is very time consuming, as it usually takes me all of twenty minutes to secure a horn in a box. I've found however that domestic U.S.A flights are not as supportive as international flights. One time in my earlier years traveling, I phoned the airline for advice and got conflicting information each time I was passed along from one service representative to another, only to be completely surprised with a different set of rules when I arrived at the ticket counter. I wish Lufthansa flew from Detroit to New York, but unfortunately their partner, US Airways is notorious for misplacing luggage. Shipping the horn is a good solution, but I advise minimizing the number of handlers...for instance shipping via air instead of ground. Checking the well packed horn on the plane amounts to the same thing. You can discard the box at the other end if you wish. All in all, I prefer to take matters into my own hands and not rely on the good graces of the airline company. My horn is worth the small inconvenience. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] u] On Behalf Of hans Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 1:58 AM To: 'Mara Cushion'; 'The Horn List' Subject: RE: [Hornlist] airline security again Hello Mara, as Pandolfi´s advive is perfect but also time consuming & not too practical, I would just ring up the airline & tell them your problem. Re: [Hornlist] airline security again
Hi Mara, Pack the horn carefully (ask the person who is going to cut your bell for advice) and SHIP the horn to the craftsperson who is going to cut the bell. Ask them to ship it back when they are done. Cheaper and safer than taking it on the plane..and even cheaper and safer if you ship the horn and stay home. scottito Hey guys: I am fully aware that I have asked this before and I'm going to do it again with the slim possibility that things have either changed, or someone has newer information to offer me. RE: [Hornlist] airline security again
Part of this depends on the size of the plane. If the horn is in a gig bag flung over your shoulder, usually nobody says anything until you then try to fit it in the overhead compartment. Some planes have the room, and others do not. If the attendant notices that you are struggling with it, then the trouble begins. Oftentimes, however, you get a sympathetic attendant, and your horn gets safely stored in a closet in first class. If they are not so nice and insist that you check it (which of course you do not want to do in a gig bag) then you need to make a fuss. A good alternative, one I have used, is to put the horn in a hard case, with extra foam or bubble wrap to keep it from moving, and then put the case in a cardboard shipping box that is also well padded. Assuming it is your only checked luggage, you should meet the weight requirement, and also be as safe as possible against the luggage gorilla who is less than gentle putting it on the conveyer belt. In other words, pack it as if you were shipping it by common carrier. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mara Cushion Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2006 10:29 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] airline security again Hey guys: I am fully aware that I have asked this before and I'm going to do it again with the slim possibility that things have either changed, or someone has newer information to offer me.
