RE: [Hornlist] Flight case
I thought I'd add one last bit to this and then let it go - For those of you who aren't looking for a "carry-on" solution but something that can be safely checked and stowed (for those of you who tour often and are on a plane almost every other day), there are a couple solutions. Many folks use the Anvil brand cases for this but they are VERY heavy and quite bulky. However, Pelican offers a line of cases which is very lightweight, very rugged and you can find a case the right size to fit your horn. I buy my Pelicans from B&H Photo Video (www.bhphotovideo.com) since they seem to have the cheapest prices on them. They come with a "pick-and-pluck" foam or naked (no foam at all). I would advise against the P&P foam as it crumbles easy and it's not terribly shock resistant. Instead, there's another company - CaseCad (www.casecad.com) - which will make custom laser cut foam which is a medium density foam and which doesn't flake and get in your valves and on your slides like the P&P foam would. All told, you could get a case and a custom cut insert to securely hold and lock up your horn for around $400-$500. I have no affiliation with any of these companies - I just trust their work implicitly! I carry around 1 case which contains nearly $40,000 of microphones and it's a Pelican with CaseCAD inserts and I wouldn't trade it for the world! One little side benefit - the Pelicans are water tight and buoyant up to a certain weight (more weight than the horn would ever be). That way if the plane goes down over sea, you'll have something to do until the rescue team arrives. Cheers! Jeremy No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. RE: [Hornlist] Flight case
I have the MB8 case in stock - and partially helped Marcus with the idea of it. It is indeed the least tall of the cases. It also has the option of zip on 'extras' like a suit bag, or a music case. Between the MB6,7, and 8 - there are plenty of airline friendly cases. I would agree with Paul Navarro that the most certain one to fit would be the MB3 since it does come apart into 2 sections. RE: [Hornlist] Flight case
In my experience, the case's height is usually the reason it fits or not in a plane's overhead so an MB8 should easily fit. The next most important dimension would be the width and the MB8 is the same as an MB7 at 14" so again it should fit. I don't think the 24" length is a problem but on smaller planes you might have to find an empty bin to put it in. On larger planes I can often put my MB7 case in endwise which makes more room for other passengers; I think the MB8's 24" would not fit that way however. Thanks, Barbara = I fly USAIR and America West often, and sometimes Southwest; they seem to always use an Airbus 319 or 320. I use an Olds horn case - it fits perfectly in the overhead compartment, but you have to kind of twist it in. The critical dimension is the bell diameter, which is 13 inches. The overhead compartment in 747 planes is a hair smaller, and this case won't quite fit. USAIR folks at the gate never took any interest in my horn - I don't know of any strict policy. If the gatekeeper is on your left side, hold your horn on your right side with your 2nd carry-on bag on top of it while you distract him/her with your boarding pass in your left hand. The TE cases probably won't fit on smaller planes. The MB7 compact case should fit. I recently traveled on a smaller plane with my full size MB7 case and they allowed me to carry it on but it did not fit in overhead (it very nearly fit though). On one plane the stewardess allowed me to put it in the closet (which is supposed to be for the airline employees only); on another plane I had to hold it in my lap. Re: [Hornlist] Flight case
In the past I have had several problems getting my horn on the smaller planes. However, since I purchased a Bonna case that has a removable bell section, I have had no problems at all. Recently flying between Stockholm and Oslo, I encountered the most adamant flight attendant who insisted that the horn was just NOT going on the plane. I unzipped the bell section from the body of the case and showed her that the body could go in the overhead compartment, and the bell section under the seat. She didn't know what to say except "I guess that will work." This is the only case I now use or will use for flying. For those not familiar with this case, it has two sections: one for the body of the horn and another for the bell. The two zip together to form a normal shaped Bonna case. RE: [Hornlist] Flight case
For what it's worth, I fly Southwest all the time and they've always been more than willing to accommodate me even when I didn't have a flight case. (I use the Bona MB7 now and it fits on every plane I've been on). Usually, I explain to the airline personnel what it is and they understand. If worse comes to worse, I've had to give it to a flight attendant upon boarding and she placed it elsewhere on the plane (in the passenger cabin, not the cargo hold) and gave it back to me when we landed. The same was true on a small (2+1 configuration) Continental Airlines flight. They were very kind and held it for me until landing. On a slightly different note, I have actually been asked to play my horn by airport security. Their rationale was that something could be hidden inside. So, I did the only thing I could in that situation - Til. ;-) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Barbara Rutledge Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 7:29 PM To: The Horn List Subject: RE: [Hornlist] Flight case I mostly fly united air and southwest airlines, and I am a bit worried about their "strict" policy on carry ons.
