Maning,

There don't seem to be that many walls, only one or two so far in the
squares I have done. The roads are basically done in this area so
once we get the buildings that should be good for now I think.

I might do all the trees like I did in Gulu, Uganda. I can mark all
the locations and measure the relative size of all the trees in an
area this size in a few hours but I don't know if that would be useful
or not. It would be kind of interesting to set up the humanitarian
rendering and take advantage of the size information to show only the
big trees at the lower zooms, etc. Could also have a couple different
icons for small, medium, and large trees, etc. This would allow high
zoom printouts to be able to locate things very precisely which could
be interesting.

[HOT] Intensity Map

2014-03-19 Thread james sadlier
Hi,

Is there any advice on the best way to do an intensity map. My data is
updated on a monthly basis, but is in the format of town, province, etc.

My internet access is limited both in speed and frequency of access, so an
offline solution, that can be updated on a monthly basis would be better
for me.

Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

James

Jorieke,

I made an announcement on IRC and got a few respondents already and I
will be mapping for the next several hours as well. It would be good
if you could hop on our mumble server before you go out tomorrow
morning to chat briefly about what your survey plan is, etc. This
will help us better know what to map, and I can try to share some tips
on what to look for as well.

Here is a link to instructions on how to set up mumble. We have
tested it over low bandwidth internet links in both Africa and Haiti
on both computers and on the Android/IOS version of the program and it
works quite well for voice communication. It also has the additional
advantage of being strongly encrypted from client to server which is a
nice feature to have in areas like the Congo or Central African
Republic where there is ongoing sporadic violence.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mumble

One question I had was regarding what printouts you are using, are you
printing the default mapnik style or the humanitarian style on your
field papers pages? Also, I am wondering if you have printers there
in DRC to print out updated versions as the week progresses? Finally,
I had heard you will be taking GPS traces to better align imagery,
etc. I expect the bing imagery will be pretty well aligned anyway but
the traces will be good as a secondary source to double check.

Looking forward to working with you over the next week to see how the
project progresses.

[HOT] OpenDRI Field Guide Released

2014-03-19 Thread Kate Chapman
Hi All,

I wanted to point out to you that the "Open Data for Resilience
Initiative: Field Guide" was released yesterday(1). This is an
exciting report authored by John Crowley and our friends at the World
Bank Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. You'll also
see many HOT volunteers, partners and members are listed as providing
input to the report.

The power of having what we do codified into reports like this is an
important aspect to the work HOT does. Every time it happens it makes
it that much easier to coordinate with traditional institutions and
interest them in the power of open data.

Best,

-Kate

Hi Jorieke,

I have added the instructions to TM job http://tasks.hotosm.org/job/456

If people from America and Asia could start to map remotely until 9:00 GMT,
this would help the people in Lubumbashi DRC tomorrow morning to print the
Field Papers and go on the ground.

Small suggestion, start mapping in the north, we will need these the fastest!

[HOT] Mapping Lubumbashi, DRC

2014-03-19 Thread Jorieke Vyncke
Hi all!

A little message straight out of Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of
Congo. I arrived yesterday to support the MSF team (Docters Without
Borders) in their awsome OpenStreetMap mapping week!

And for this we can really use the remote support of the rest of the HOT
OpenStreetMap world! Yes, by this I also mean the places where the
temperature is a little bit less than here ;-)

A few weeks ago we had a great mapping party in Berlin, and now almost the
whole roadnetwork of Lubumbashi is mapped. By going on the field today with
the biggest fieldpapers you can image, we however need sometimes more
detailed information!

For this purpose the creation of two TM is in preparation. One of a part of
the city which is really croweded, with a lot of people, with small
streets, which are not yet mapped as detailled as possible on
OpenStreetMap. So for this taks it will be important to really map in
detail. The buildings, the bigger streets, the smaller alleys ...
The other TM will be a zone where we will go tomorrow (This means in 8
hours!) with some MSF staff, but more important about 10 geography students
of the local university. We now have field papers of what is existing now,
what is the road network. It would however be good to have a liltle more
info on this neighbourhood. In that way we well be able to orient us soo
much better. Big buildings, or other places you think this might be a
hospital, or a school... in that way we even can use it already tomorrow!

Curious to see what we will see here tomorrow in the morning! :-)

And for sure I will come back to you later, because this week in Lubumbashi
just started!

All the best and mappy night!
