[HOT] Introducing Ramadyan Abdul Hadi | Indonesia
Hello everyone, I would like to introduce Ramadyan Abdul Hadi to the HOT team! Ramadyan is part of the Pacific Disaster Centre <http://www.pdc.org/> (PDC) project in Indonesia, which focuses on the mapping of key lifeline infrastructure in OSM for use in the InAWARE platform and other disaster management tools. Ramadyan has been with the team in Indonesia from the start of the project in mid 2016, when we kick started things in the city of Surabaya. He initially joined as a Quality Assurance specialist, providing valuable structural knowledge with his architectural background from the Widya Mandira Catholic University in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. Following the successful mapping of Surabaya and Jakarta, the two largest cities in Indonesia, we were signed on to continue our mapping efforts in the city of Semarang in Central Java. With Wulan Khairunisa now leading the Facebook team, Ramadyan has stepped up to become a Team Supervisor alongside Dewi Sulistioningrum, for the PDC project. Please give Ramadyan a warm welcome, as he takes on this new role to oversee a team of specialists mapping communication towers, transportation links, water and electrical supply systems, public institutions, health facilities, emergency services, government establishments, administrative boundaries and in some areas, evacuation routes <https://openstreetmap.id/en/english-mapping-administrative-boundaries-and-evacuation-routes-for-the-pacific-disaster-center-inaware-project/> . Get to know all the Indonesia HOT team members <http://Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team Indonesia>, who are doing amazing work through a number of initiatives, paving the way for equality in OSM across the country. [HOT] HOT Export Tool Review | Community Chat
Salam from Indonesia, The HOT Export Tool is due for some much needed bug fixes and feature enhancements to make the overall user experience easier to extract the desired OSM data in specific file format. We are also looking at extending the tool to support exports to the Humanitarian Data Exchange <https://data.humdata.org/> (HDX) on a regular basis, and would like to discuss this with the community. All the open issues on the Export Tool GitHub <https://github.com/hotosm/osm-export-tool2/issues> have been compiled together in a document for everyone to review and share their thoughts on. Please add comments to the Google doc [1], which we can discuss this coming Wednesday. The community chat for the revision and development of the Export Tool will take place on Gitter in the following chatroom at 1400 UTC on the 2nd October: https://gitter.im/hotosm/osm-export-tool2 Kind regards, Mhairi [1] https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eXMXxch2RCQ8Nq5Rmqr54QVEW4QJK oFi6kiaXYGxQJc/edit?usp=sharing -- *Mhairi O'Hara* Project Manager mhairi.oh...@hotosm.org @mataharimhairi *Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team* *Using OpenStreetMap for Humanitarian Response & Economic Development* web <http://hotosm.org/> | twitter <https://twitter.com/hotosm> | facebook <https://www.facebook.com/hotosm> | donate <http://hotosm.org/donate> ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
[HOT] Activation Work Group Meeting | 5th October 2016
Hello HOTties, The Activation WG meeting is set for 1430 UTC this Wednesday (5th October 2016) on IRC Chat [1], where we get together and discuss items related to activating on behalf of HOT. A lot of great items were discussed during the HOT Summit a couple weeks ago and it would be great to continue them during the WG meeting to gain traction and get them moving. Similarly if you want to get involved and support the Activation for Hurricane Matthew, or already are, we would like to hear more about it and see where we can help, so please join the WG meeting! The agenda for the meeting can be found on the Activation WG Trello board [2]. Please add any other items you would like to see covered in the meeting. [HOT] AWG Meeting Summary | 6th September 2016
Hello HOTties, So we didn't run the meetbot during yesterdays meeting, because I thought it was only Russell and myself that were attending, but luckily Blake, Mikel and Cristiano showed up and some great ideas were discussed: - Have new students signup to the Activation curriculum course via a Google Form - Each new student will be buddied up with an Activation mentor to guide them and show them the ropes - Migrate the Activation course content from Moodle to GitBooks which is more user friendly and easier to maintain - Arrange an Activation sprint during the Summit/SOTM to move the content and get input from the community - Move Activation WG meetings to the 1st Wednesday of each month at 1400 UTC (next meeting will be on the 5th October 2016) Unfortunately I won't be attending the events at the end of the month in Brussels, so I leave it up to the other four to coordinate the best time and see it through. [HOT] International Womens Day - Mapping locations and dates of incidents on OpenStreetMaps
Hello, Sexual harrassment towards women has been increasing in Bali with a number of individuals taking a stand by capturing images to post on Facebook to shame and apprehend, and I would like to help assist by empowering women to utilise OSM to further highlight and tackle these kinds of issues. I am thinking of trying to create some kind of harassment map like they have in Egypt (http://harassmap.org ). Ideally I would like to utilise OSM to capture and present this data (type of incident and date, etc), but have not been able to find an appropriate tag to use. The tag 'incident' has been used in the past, once and perhaps unofficially. So I was hoping to get some feedback and suggestions on how to approach this. In fact the mapping of this kind of data doesn't seem to exist on OSM, but is it something the community might be interested in exploring? Cheers John! We're collecting data on financial services, education and health facilities in Eastern Uganda and are looking for sharing solutions that don't involve the internet. With up to 50 students at times, sharing files via usb sticks and external hard drives is not ideal as it can be time consuming. Will look into the setup to see if it could work for us here. Re: [HOT] OSM Data Quality Assurance Curriculum Draft
Hey Iyan, It's great that you're focusing on the sustainability of the work and effort the team put into training numerous individuals across Indonesia. And I agree, its almost too much to add (intense) validation and data quality training in the first stage when most of the students are just getting to grips with OSM and all the associated tools. Please keep us in the loop of how this progresses and more importantly provide links on where we can access the material, as I personally would love to use it for follow up mapathons in Bali, to focus on data quality and validation, but I think it would be a great resource to link through to from the Activation Training site (course.hotosm.org). Glad you're all safe and things appear to be settling down in Jakarta now! [HOT] Export Tool Changing Servers | Read-Only Copy
*Hello HOTties,* *As the new Export Tool <http://export.hotosm.org/> has been successfully rolled out, the earlier version is to be switched off as it is held on the GeoFabrik servers and we will no longer be enlisting their generous services. We will create a read-only version of the old Export Too <http://old-export.hotosm.org/>l and host it on the HOT servers alongside the new Export Tool.* *The read-only version will be a web interface hosted with a copy of the database, but there will not be any further data updates and although new jobs may be created they will not be executed. The change will take place this coming Monday on the 9th November, so please be prepared to start using the new Export Tool for the creation of future exports with up-to-date data.* *We are aware that this may be inconvenient for those that would like to continue using the transform and translation functionality, which is not currently offered in the new tool. Please be patient till it is possible for these features to be added. In the meantime I would like to suggest the use of external GIS software such as QGIS <http://www.qgis.org/> to perform these tasks.* *Kind regards,* *Mhairi * -- Mhairi O'Hara Technical Project Manager Mobile: +62 822 4701 1475 Email: mhairi.oh...@hotosm.org twitter <https://twitter.com/mataharimhairi> | linkedin <http://uk.linkedin.com/in/mhairiohara> | facebook <https://www.facebook.com/hotosm> | website <http://hotosm.org/> *Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team * *Using OpenStreetMap for Humanitarian Response & Economic Development* ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot

[HOT] The new Export Tool is LIVE!
Hello HOTties, The newly developed Export Tool is now LIVE. Please register <http://export.hotosm.org/en/exports/create/> with your OSM username and explore some of the new functionality, such as the use of 'Nominatim' to search for areas of interest and the interactive 'Tree Tag' tab to select specific OSM features for export. Please note that the old Export Tool can currently still be accessed here <http://old-export.hotosm.org/>. A number of changes were made between the two versions, with the full list available on the osm-export-tool2 dedicated GitHub wiki <https://github.com/hotosm/osm-export-tool2/wiki/Live-Release>. Try out the site and help us iron out any bugs we may have missed during the Alpha and Beta phases. Similarly, please add any feature requests or enhancements you feel could greatly improve the tool as issues <https://github.com/hotosm/osm-export-tool2/issues> on the dedicated osm-export-tool2 repository. Once again we would just like to say thank you to the Hewlett Foundation <http://www.hewlett.org/>, who's grant made it possible for the redevelopment. Also thank you to Brian O'Hare, who worked relentlessly on the code, Arushi Vashist who contributed to a number of development aspects, and Drazen Odobasic who helped us set up the site on the HOT servers. And last but not least, as always thank you to the community for your continued support. Particularly to those who have taken the time throughout the tools development to test, log issues and provide invaluable feedback. On behalf of everyone at HOT, please enjoy the new tool! Hey Severin, Brian and I saw all the GitHub issues you logged. Thank you very much for these! We're just going through these now as we are preparing for the live release. In regards to the Schema Transform and Language Translation, please see the following issue [1]. I would like to track it in GitHub so that everything is recorded and people can chime in at any point. Please note this has also been suggested as a project [2] for Round 11 of the Outreachy program for a future intern to investigate and implement. [HOT] Beta Release of the Redeveloped Export Tool
Hello HOTties, Sorry for the delay in sending round an email regarding the Beta release of the Export Tool. Things were pretty busy last week with the second activation training pilot workshop in Jakarta. Please stay tuned for further updates on how it went! The new Export Tool <http://hot.geoweb.io/en/> was released for its Beta phase on Friday the 18th of September. We have had great input from the community during the Alpha release and would like your continued support with testing. Brian has successfully integrated the ability to register and login with OSM usernames. However, users will be asked for an email address when they first sign up, as this will be used to send a link for newly created exports once they are completed and ready for download. We are currently working on migrating the development version to the HOT servers this week with the assistance of Drazen our systems administrator. The Live release date is still scheduled for Monday the 28th of September. Please continue to contribute to its development and record any issues or queries you may have on the dedicated GitHub <https://github.com/hotosm/osm-export-tool2/issues> repository. We are very excited about the release and hope that the users experience not only a more robust tool from the redevelopment, but a much more efficient and intuitive process as well. Re: [HOT] Alpha Release of the Redeveloped Export Tool
Hey everyone, I agree with all of you, that a.) it would be sad to see some of the original functionality go, b.) it is a cornerstone function that clutters the tool and isn't used by most users, c.) that we could try to support administrator added translation files and sql transform files. However it is fairly late in the development of the new version, and we want to ensure what we are going live with is fully functional and solid. Brian already has a lot on his plate, with very little time to spare. What we could potentially do is set up the system so that this can easily be in corporated in the future. It would be great if we could discuss this, along with some other functionality questions at the meeting tomorrow, Thursday 17th at 1500 UTC: 1.) Open all regions for exporting data - Including continents such as Europe 2.) Different level users - Ability to export various export extents Cheers, Mhairi ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot

Re: [HOT] Alpha Release of the Redeveloped Export Tool
Hey Severin, Sorry just saw this message now. After some discussion, Brian and I thought it would be best to remove this functionality from the new tool based on the results of the survey we conducted on the Export Tool. It verified our assumption that there are only a handful of individuals that used the Transform and Translation functionality offered by the tool, who are generally more advanced GIS users. Therefore those users that have the skills and capability to create the required configuration files, can also do this modification outside of the Export Tool and probably do it much better, as it can be tested and viewed better in another GIS software. Of course we would like to hear more from the users that have used this functionality to weigh up its pros and cons. I've had the fortunate opportunity to speak to Amadou in person about his use of the Translation function and would like to discuss this more. We thought the best way to really find out how users of the tool would feel about its removal, was to go ahead and do it and see the reaction :) So let's talk about this while the tool is still in its testing phase to come to the best decision. [HOT] Field Papers Launching Live 28th May
Hello Hotties, The highly anticipated release of the new Field Papers [1] tool will take place tomorrow on the 28th of May. The site will be going live thanks to the fantastic team at Stamen Designs [2], and we can expect to experience a number of valuable enhancements, New features include but are not limited to, additional paper sizes (A3 and A4), multiple language support and a much more stable service. Check out the development site [3], as well as the Alpha [4] and Beta [5] release notes for more detailed information. Please be aware that during this transition phase the tool will be out of service. Hopefully this will not be too long, as the data migration will be carried out beforehand. However, it is always good to be on the cautious side and anticipate a couple hiccups. On behalf of Stamen Designs and the HOT OSM community, we would like to thank everyone for supporting Field Papers and encourage your continued support. [HOT] Pierre, Nama and Maning - The Coordinators of the Nepal Activation
Hello HOT family, Things have been extremely busy with the current activation and HOT can not even start to thank Pierre, Nama and Maning enough for everything they have and are doing. It's been hailed as one of the best activation responses [1], and it wouldn't have been possible without they're tireless work, along with the support of numerous organisations, the extended activation team and of course our mappers. Each and every contributor makes it possible for the maps to get out and help the people of Nepal in the wake of the disaster. HOT are focusing on getting and providing the extra support and tools the activation coordinators need to continue doing they're amazing work, as well as providing better guidance for the new contributors that are just starting out and need our mentorship. We are always open to any suggestions, so please contact us and let us know your thoughts on how we can be better and do what we do best! And thank you once again Pierre, Nama and Maning on behalf of HOT and the wider community. Hey Sarah, Not sure if you have seen these already, but here are some links you can check out: http://hot.openstreetmap.org/updates https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/2015_Nepal_earthquake#Exporting_OpenStreetMap_data Here is the most recent update from Maning Sambale, one of the Activation Coordinators: “~ mappers have made 28689 edits to highways and 138191 edits to buildings in 26582 changesets since April 25, 2015.” [0] Again, an increase from yesterday! Note that this is a conservative measure, many experienced mappers do not necessarily follow the suggested changesets comment which is perfectly OK. = Retired tasks and new ones = We are now slowly moving into the second phase of mapping. In the first days, we focused on just road network. But now, coming from the demand on the ground (through KLL), we are starting the detailed mapping within Kathmandu and other districts heavily affected. Major task is #1018 [1]. We tried as much as we can to provide detailed instructions especially for beginners. Please review and advise the activators if it needs improvement. = Validators needed for IDP camp mapping = The two IDP camps tasks [2 & 3] are now complete, we need more validators to check the quality. As soon as new imagery becomes available we will move on to other areas for IDP mapping. For now, we request experienced mappers to review and validate. = Maximising the utilisation of Post-EQ imagery = Currently we are using mostly pre-EQ imagery for the basemapping efforts. IDP mapping uses post-EQ imagery from Pleiades/AirBus. More post-disaster imagery are trickling in from the ever reliable DigitalGlobe, Pleiades/AirBus, MapGive and Mapbox. New ones are also coming from SkyBox [4], Cartosat [5] and PlanetLabs (pre-EQ archive) [6]. The activators are reviewing this for later creation of new tasks. = Damaged assessment request = Again, there is a request from KLL to do damage assessment. This what most of the ground responders they talk to are asking. There is an on-going discussion on how to best approach this request. [HOT] [FIELD PAPERS] Alpha Release
Hello Hotties, Stamen Design have been working on a new release of Field Papers and now have an Alpha version ready for testing. Please see a summary of their blog [1] regarding their recent work and the help they need and would greatly appreciate from the HOT community: *"For years, humanitarian efforts have turned to Field Papers to aid on-the-ground mapping. Now, thanks to a grant from the Hewlett Foundation by way of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, Stamen is rebooting the application and refreshing its infrastructure. Our goal is to keep Field Papers working effortlessly, no matter where they are, and to provide a foundation for the years ahead.* *To help us get there, we want to hear from you – is the software working well? What’s tricky? What’s slow? We’re also looking for translators to help expand the software to all localities where it is needed.* *Give next.fieldpapers.org <http://next.fieldpapers.org/> (what we’re calling today's alpha release) a try and reach out with your feedback or translations: * - *General feedback and bug reports: https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/issues <https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/issues> * - *Join an existing translation team or form a new one: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/fieldpapers/ <https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/fieldpapers/> * *Note that scanning marked-up atlases back in doesn’t work yet — we’re rolling that out soon, and then (along with your help and feedback) it’ll be a beta!"* Kind regards, HOT + Stamen Design -- Mhairi O'Hara Technical Project Manager Email: mhairi.oh...@hotosm.org Indonesian Mobile: +62 822 4701 1475 *Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team * *Using OpenStreetMap for Humanitarian Response & Economic Development* ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
[HOT] [CROWDSOURCE] World Bank Challenge Fund Proposal
Hello Hotties, I am reaching out to the HOTOSM community for proposal ideas for the World Bank Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and UK Department for International Development (DFID) Challenge Fund [1]: *"This Challenge Fund seeks to provide small grants to projects that address the challenge in bridging the gap between technology and on-the-ground user needs in the field of disaster risk identification. This can be achieved through the development of data, products and approaches to support disaster risk management decision making and build resilience, including better information, but also strengthening key steps in moving from information to insight and behaviour change."* Proposals should focus on the use of HOTOSM tools and mapping in accordance with the following criteria: - A specific problem statement under GFDRR Pillar 1: Risk Identification <https://www.gfdrr.org/area/Pillar1> - Geographical focus on developing countries with an emphasis on the Africa and Asia regions - Development of open access data, products, tools and approaches. HOT is looking to submit two proposals. The first one looks at linking the use of InaSAFE [2] and the currently missing community-driven resiliency data that provides a voice in identifying local strengths and challenges in Indonesia. This is important for bridging the gap between the technology and the needs of the on-the-ground users, as it enables realistic and locally-owned analysis of social vulnerability. We would like to ask for your help in coming up with a second proposal incorporating OpenStreetMap and HOT Tools. Re: [HOT] [HOT TWG] Re: Issue with the HOT Export shapefiles and ArcGIS
Hello all, This issue definitely needs to be addressed, as it is recorded in github as four separate issues [1][2][3][4] and is vital as a large number of people are ArcGIS users. Providing CRS options should address some of these problems, and hopefully thi can be carried out with the hire of the Export Tool Developer [5]. There are four main deliverables listed for the position, which are labelled as 'must' in github. These were selected based on what is required to be covered under the Hewlett Grant. However once all of these are all addressed, and there is more time, then the developer will move on to the issues labelled 'should'. Sorry, I initially labelled this issue as 'must', which I have now changed to 'should', but will keep in it in mind. There is a good chance that there will be extra time to dedicate to those labelled 'should', if a candidate is successfully selected to carry out the 'Improve the Export Tool Help Documentation' listed as an Outreachy internship project. Re: [HOT] Communications Outreach
I also agree in regards to doing a TED talk about HOT and MissingMaps, or any of the ongoing projects for that matter. Almost all my friends watch TED talks, and a huge number of them are not involved with mapping, humanitarian work or open source projects, but I know a lot of them would watch the video if it was available. It's a great way to reach out to non-specialists that might have never heard of HOT or GIS in general, but are curious. Well curious enough to watch a video at their finger tips, but not curious enough to search designated sites, forums, or blogs related to crowd sourced mapping. There is currently a massive hype around TED talks and we should use it to spread the word to the general public! [HOT] Field Papers GitHub Repository
Hello again Hotties, Just to let you all know that a GitHub repository for Field Papers [1] has been created. Please check it out if you want to keep up-to-date on the current enhancements being carried out on the software, under the Hewlett grant [2], as well as the chance to get involved. The READMEs have been updated by Seth Fitzsimmons, for various components with an eye toward attracting new contributors (and hopefully providing enough context for them to get started) [3][4][5]. Cheers, Mhairi [1] https://github.com/fieldpapers [2] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation [3] https://github.com/fieldpapers/fp-scanner/blob/master/README.md [4] https://github.com/fieldpapers/fp-web/blob/master/README.md [5] https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/blob/master/README.md -- Mhairi O'Hara Technical Project Manager Email: mhairi.oh...@hotosm.org Indonesian Mobile: +62 822 4701 1475 *Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team * *Using OpenStreetMap for Humanitarian Response & Economic Development* ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
[HOT] Hewlett Foundation GitHub Repository
Hello Hotties, Please let me bring your attention to the new GitHub repository [1], that has been created to manage the projects and associated tasks of the Hewlett Foundation Grant. It was decided that the Hewlett grant be divided into activities that focus on HOT related software improvements and HOT Activation coordinator training development. Information regarding these activities can be found on at the following repo wiki pages: Software Improvement - Field Papers [2] - Tasking Manager [3] - Export Tool [4] Activation Coordinator Training Development - Curriculum Development [5] - Coordinator Training [6] - Outreach Program [7] Please take a look at the tasks associated with the above activities, which are listed as issues [8] to follow the progress and provide any questions and feedback you may have regarding the matter. Kind regards, Mhairi [1] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/ [2] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Field-Papers [3] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Tasking-Manager [4] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Export-Tool [5] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Curriculum-Development [6] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Coordinator-Training [7] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/wiki/Outreach-Program [8] https://github.com/hotosm/Hewlett-Foundation/issues -- Mhairi O'Hara Technical Project Manager Email: mhairi.oh...@hotosm.org Indonesian Mobile: +62 822 4701 1475 *Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team * *Using OpenStreetMap for Humanitarian Response & Economic Development* ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
[HOT] New GitHub repository for HOT Project Ideas
Hello hotties, With the onset of the Google Summer of Code and the Outreachy program, we are reaching out to the community to propose project ideas. Most of you probably know about the programs, but for those of you that don't, here is a little information: *'Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. Who have worked with the open source community to identify and fund exciting projects for the upcoming summer.' *[1] 'Outreachy is a program that aims to help people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software get involved. Providing a supportive community for beginning to contribute any time throughout the year and offer focused internship opportunities twice a year with a number of free software organizations. *The upcoming round of internships is open to women (cis and trans), trans men and genderqueer people, and all participants of the Ascend Project regardless of gender '. *[2] HOT would like to participate as a free and open source software organisation that will offer internships to both the GSoC [3] and Outreachy [4] program. And in light of all the project ideas being proposed, HOT has decided to create a HOT-Project-Ideas GitHub repository [5] where this can be done, while ensuring that the workflow is organised, structured and efficient. A GitHub wiki page for GSoC [6] and Outreachy [7] have been created, containing information on how to propose ideas, while the ideas themselves are listed and can be discussed as issues [8]. So please keep contributing to project ideas at the new GitHub repository.
