When I started testing with v1.10, it stopped working. When I

1.10.  I tried 65x200 and ended up with 24x80.  Same with 65x162.  It seems
ISPF doesn't like anything greater than 160.  I also tried it on a z/OS 1.9

Out of curiosity, why 200?  Is there something that wide that you look at?

FWIW, I have been happily using 90x142 since you mentioned it.  I got to
wondering how big I could go, so I tried 120x160 and got:

ISPI001  Invalid screen size. The width cannot exceed 160 and the depth
cannot exceed 62

I have determined that 102x160 works and 103x160 does not.
115x142 works and 116x142 does not.

102x160 is 16,320 bytes.
115x142 is 16,330 bytes.

It seems that ISPF allows 16K (16384 bytes) for the screen buffer.

Is job PRDGIWEB still active in the system GPSYS01? That is what is holding
the file. If it is, then you need to possibly cycle that job. If this is
the job that abended, then it is possible that you may have to IPL to clean
this up. Or contact IBM and see if they can provide a solution.

Is this a unix file? Perhaps there is still a process running holding the
file in BPX. See if D OMVS,F can help. If there is a process, then
terminate that ID.

Re: Old discussion about Windows running on a mainframe ( I brought up)

2009-03-24 Thread Harry Wahl
Platform Solutions, Inc. had this technology and much more. Their technology is
now IBM's.

Many people accuse IBM of acquiring PSI to stifle competition, but this is a
great disservice to the engineers at PSI, particularly former Amdahl engineers,
who are now bound to silence by NDAs.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/23/technology/companies/23mainframe.html?_r=3pagewanted=2ref=technologyadxnnlx=1237816804-Ls%2021S/ySzdFWiPCcF03qQ

IBM may see the virtualization of Windows onto z architecture as strategic;
both as servers and workstations and its acquisition of PSI reflects this.

From what little Mantissa has disclosed, their approach, IMHO, is inherently
flawed. Their SHARE presentation seemed to be little more than an obfuscated
discourse on virtualization in general. Even if their approach works, it would
have been better, architecturally, to emulate an Itanium for Windows hosting
because of the nature of the Itanium’s instruction parallelism.

A more sensible approach would be to look at creating a Windows HAL (hardware
abstraction layer), or something conceptually similar, that runs on z/Series.
Historically, this is how Windows has been made to run on different machine
architectures. Of course, cooperative development between IBM and Microsoft
would be necessary.

Another possibility is to exploit the Infiniband feature of the z/10. This
feature is profound in terms of 360-z/series evolution, but has been largely
ignored, so far.

Infiniband attached external hardware products that expose x86 architecture
processors, from Intel or IBM itself (or maybe even Intel Larrabee), is an
ideal way to run Windows on IBM mainframes.

In the interest of disclosure, I have worked for both IBM and PSI, but the
opinions I express here are complete conjecture.

Will Big Blue mainframes run Windows?

 z/VMs get Microsoft rumor
By Timothy Prickett Morgan • Get more from this author

Whitepaper download - Eight CRM essentials
An obscure mainframe software company called Mantissa Corporation bragged
last summer on the IBM VM listserv - which is dedicated to virtual mainframe
environments - that it was creating a product called z/VOS that would allow
slices of a Windows operating system to run atop z/VM, the
hypervisor-as-operating system for IBM mainframes. The product was due in the
first quarter of this year, and the story of its impending release has been
 making the rounds.

According to a report in NetworkWorld, Mantissa's z/VOS, presumably short for
Virtual Operating System, is a layer of software for VM that allows desktop
and server Windows operating systems to run in emulated mode atop z/VM.
Mantissa - which is based in Birmingham, Alabama, and which is a supplier of
report distribution and other tools for mainframes - talked about the z/VOS
product at the SHARE mainframe user conference in early March in Austin,
Texas. But that was not the same thing as a product launch.

We've tried to reach the company for several days, but Mantissa has yet to
 respond.

While IBM and the Linux community for mainframes centered around Marist
College in New York have worked to get official mainframe ports done for
Linux - Red Hat and Novell officially support mainframes, if you can write a
big enough check to get support - there is no native Windows port to IBM
mainframes as far as I know. So, the real curiosity is how Mantissa is
supporting Windows XP or Vista atop z/VM partitions.

According to the company's development blog, z/VOS includes a translation
engine that converts native x86 code to its System z equivalent. See how
easy that was? As it translates equivalent results - not creating equivalent
machine code, mind you - the instruction that is created by z/VOS is stored
in memory so it can be accessed the next time the operating system function
inside Windows running on the mainframe is asked for again.

Since Gary Dennis, Mantissa's chief executive officer and founder - and other
we've called - are not answering their phones, it is a little hard to take
the company seriously. But if it can indeed deliver a layer of abstraction
software atop z/VM that lets Windows desktops and servers run on mainframe
iron, the company should probably think about getting someone to answer the
phones and maybe a salesperson or two to try to take some orders. If the x86
translation overhead is not too high, this could be a very interesting
development - and one that Big Blue would seem pretty keen on supporting, not
 quashing. ®

ICETOOL - date subtraction?

I don't see a way to do this, but maybe I'm just missing it. I am writing a

shows IDs which have not been used in the last 90 days. This is rather
simple with a statement similar to:

INCLUDE COND=(USBD_LASTJOB_DATE,LE,DATE1(-)-90)

This is replacing an existing report which printed the duration, which would
be something like (if it were possible):

ON (DATE1(-)-USBD_LASTJOB_DATE) HEADING('INACTIVE DAYS')

is there any way, using ICETOOL to subtract a date in -MM-DD, character
format, from today's date with the result being a simple number?

I doubt it, but ...

Doesn't PSI does the opposite of what Mantissa claims to be working on?

PSI runs z architecture on x86 hardware whereas Mantissa claims to run x86
architecture on z hardware.

Combine the two and you could run Windows on z/VM on a x86 emulating a z
machine.Sounds snappy :-)

BTW: MacOS did this quite successfully when they switched from 68000 to
Power architecture. You could run your 68000 binaries and they would be
dynamically translated into a cache Power instructions. They did it again
when they moved to x86.

See: http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Mac_68K_emulator/

Of course, modern byte-code VMs use dynamic translation (JIT) to translate
frequently used byte codes into native machine instructions. Yet, it is
still amazing how many people think that Java is still only interpreted.
Quoting from an Austin SHARE presentation on PHP:

Unlike Java or other interpretive language, PHP’s focus is to
use the script to invoke “native” C subroutines that do the
actual work at full speed

A more sensible approach would be to look at creating a Windows HAL
(hardware abstraction layer), or something conceptually similar, that
runs on z/Series. Historically, this is how Windows has been made to
run on different machine architectures. Of course, cooperative
development between IBM and Microsoft would be necessary.

Another possibility is to exploit the Infiniband feature of the z/10.
This feature is profound in terms of 360-z/series evolution, but has
 been largely ignored, so far.

Infiniband attached external hardware products that expose x86
architecture processors, from Intel or IBM itself (or maybe even Intel
Larrabee), is an ideal way to run Windows on IBM mainframes.

It seems to me that the obvious way to do this would be to build z86
on z in millicode. Then, the only real issue would be performance. An
all millicode representation would be somewhat slower than the
silicon.

Radoslaw, Just curious. Where is it documented that 1.7 to 1.10 is not
 supported?

I don't know. What I know is the supported jump/coexistence window is
equal to support window. In other words jump from X to Y is supported as
long as X is under support. 1.7 came out of support before 1.10 was
 GA'd. Am I right?

Thank you Radoslaw, John and Walt. Looks like to doc Walt provided tells all.

SV: COBOL and dynamic allocation (my two cents)

I disagree, Ed. Reading a list of
destinations from a parmlib-type dataset can be the easiest, and
best way, to handle this situation. But updates to this
 dataset should
be controled and audited, just like a PROCLIB or any other
control-related library. Make provision for comments in the
destination list and it doesn't have to degenerate into a
 boar's nest,

  -- Rick

 Rick:
Yes you can do that I didn't say you couldn't the issue is
(albeit a side issue and important IMO none the less)
associating the contents back to the step that is using it
*AND* if you then move it out of lets say proclib for
discussion here, there is and always will be oops I forgot
that this had to be updated. Plus you have the side issue of
when the change occurs. usually its another department that
handles the update so scheduling it is a matter of what can
go wrong will go wrong. I am a pessimist and I have rarely
seen it where departments can actually depend on an update to
occur when it should. This is not to say your installation
is better but more times than not it doesn't happen.

There is also another side issue I have experienced myself.
in the it is extremely common to search proclib for a
dest= (for production and non production) chances are
with your way moving it to parmlib type dataset this scan
will miss the destination you are looking for.

As i see it, it is about how You do the application
maintenance. This is really no different than other
applications, although other may be implemented in
COBOL or other programming languages and this is
maybe at JCL level programming.

In the same way as You secure future maintenance of
COBOL programs You do for this case.
(Application librarys, production installation
routines etc.)

Everything in these cases is about code and
data storage; COBOL and DB2, JCL and parmlib,
ASM and QSAM, etc...

Same base routines, rules and quality verification
etc.

Let me put it another way, then. Prior to the recent implementation of
NetView's Message Revision Table (for SSI-based message suppression
among other things) NetView had absolutely no control over messages
WTOed from other address spaces. None.

It could suppress its own messages and VTAM messages . That's it.

NetView could control what it did with a copy of the message:
log/nolog to NetView's log, display/nodisplay on a NetView user's
terminal, log/nolog a copy to SYSLOG (which would result in 2 SYSLOG
copies of the message if MPF had SUP(N).

NetView had no control over the original WTOed message because it
operated on a copy of the message sent to it by the NetView SSI.
It could write to SYSLOG a message that MPF had given SUP(Y) but
had no way to suppress an external message with SUP(N).

The only supported releases are 1.8 - 1.10.

Compatibility, coexistence, toleration (CCT) is guaranteed for n+2.
Support is GA+3 years.

That being said, I have violated the n+2 (n+3 at the time) CCT rule.

You should still be able to get the 1.7-1.9 CCT PTFs. Put them on.
Be careful of the console restructure and protected user key CSA.
Use the 1.9 migration aid.
Verify your vendor products.

Review the 1.10 migration guide for big issues.

Do NOT run 1.7 and 1.10 simultaneously in a shared DASD environment.
Switching between 1.7 and 1.10 MAY work, be prepared to recover
catalogs.

Do NOT use any new 1.10 features until 1.7 is history.

Good luck.

Future of DLC (Data Link Control)

Anyone aware of any stated DLC direction (like it's going away soon)? I'm

Hum, parts of z/Architecture are patented. Not the hardware to perform the
function, but the actual function itself - indepandant of the
implementation. Neither Hercules/390 nor PSI had a license for those parts
of the z/Architecture, even though they implemented them (not totally sure
about Hercules/390 on this point).

Also, as I remember (Danger, Will Robinson!), part of IBM's argument was
that PSI's implementation of the z/Architecture was not verified by IBM. IBM
said that in that case, the use of licensed IBM software (z/OS et al.) could
not be guaranteed. However, much of IBM's premium for their software was
due to IBM's guarantees on the reliability of the software. If the hardware
was not up to snuff, then IBM might suffer damage to its reputation for
reliability if the software (z/OS) were to fail. This was the logic as to
why IBM refused to license z/OS et al. on the PSI solution.

Only GRS-Ring allows you to go outside the scope of a single SYSPLEX.
GRS-Ring has (exponential) performance issues.

MIM performs better (IMO) than GRS-Ring.

If you put the controls into the CF (GRS* -- optional with MIM), then you
cannot span SYSPLEX's, because you cannot share CF's between SYSPLEX's.

All of that being said, what exactly do you want to do?
If you don't go beyond 2 SYSPLEX's, GRS-Ring won't hurt too much.
And, you can save the cost of 2 MIM licences.

Gray,

The GRS ring has to have CTC connections between all LPARs that you want
to share data. The more LPARs in the ring, the worse performance gets. At
one site, we had 8 LPARs (6 were in a single sysplex). It was managable for
our needs. As for sharing tape, I prefer the IBM product ATAM. Communicates
between LPARs with TCPIP. Drives are offline to LPARs until needed. Still need
GRS or MIM to protect data enqueues. Contact me offline if you want more
details on how this was handled.

ICETOOL - date subtraction

2009-03-24 Thread john gilmore
John McKown's problem is a trivial one after the conversion of a MMDD date
into an integer elapsed-days-after-epoch-origin form.

The PL/I procedure below does this conversion and then calculates the
day-of-the week in the sequence 0, 1, 2, . . . , 6, from it. Omitting this
last step yieds the result that John needs.

This procedure also includes comments that explain the calendrical computations

The implementation of this scheme is straightforward in any statement-level

Ted,
We have a monoplex, a Sysplex(5 lpars) and a Sysplex(2 lpars) that share DASD.
There is not much activity between the monoplex and the rest. More between the

other plex's DASD. Looking to save MIM licenses. We have plans but no schedule
to reduce the 5 lpars to 4 or 2.

All of that being said, what exactly do you want to do?
If you don't go beyond 2 SYSPLEX's, GRS-Ring won't hurt too much.
And, you can save the cost of 2 MIM licences.

GRSPLEX vs CA MIM IM

We are creating two new systems without our usual (and historic) set of
software. In researching the new setup, I found a GRSPLEX can span systems
not in a sysplex. Does this work well enough to use a GRSPLEX instead of
CA MIM Integrity Manager? If you are using a GRSPLEX between systems what
are you using to share tape?

Sorry, I misspoke a bit.
When I said GRS-Ring was okay between two SYSPLEX's, I was wrong.
It's between images.
Since the GRS token has to be passed to each image to ensure global ENQ's, the
more the worse the response.

GRS* only works within a single SYSPLEX.

MIMgr works because (as long as the CDS is not in a CF), every system talks
directly with the master system (oldest IPL), so there is only passing of data
between the requester and the master -- no passing around a ring.

The ring is the bottleneck, and you have eight systems -- way to many!

If you can afford the fees, I'd stick with MIMgr in your config.

MFNetDisk is not only disk.

2009-03-24 Thread Shai Hess
HI,

In a few days or more MFNetDisk will have support to tape.

It will support 3490 emulation tape for now.

This feature is part of the MFNetDisk.

You can run one MFNetDisk with support to disk and tape as well.

The emulation can be mixure of tapes and disks in one job.

The tape emulation will run the best as MTL.

As the disks, the tape emulation support unlimited tapes number and unlimited
PC without any distant limitation.

I will let you know when the product will be ready.

I will be happy to receive feedback from you privately to my email.

 Thanks,
 Shai

Re: GRSPLEX vs CA MIM IM

2009-03-24 Thread Don Deese

Ted,

Actually, you were correct originally. Ring works between systems in an
environment that has a sysplex and systems outside the sysplex. It is Star
that works only within a sysplex. In fact, if you have only a sysplex,
there is almost zero reason to use Ring and IBM strongly recommends Star in
this situation.

A Ring in his environment might not be so bad, depending on the how Gray
sets it up. He could significantly lower the RESMIL value to improve
performance (IBM recommends RESMIL of 0 for an environment such as his
without Ring Acceleration). There would be a little more overhead, but
perhaps he can afford the overhead as a trade-off for better
performance. Also, he could use ACCELSYS(2) to gain a significant
performance benefit in his Ring.

I'm not saying that he should go with Ring rather than staying with MIM,
but sometimes you do what you have to do. If money is really tight,
perhaps Ring would be acceptable. I do suggest that Gray carefully review
the considerations outlined in the MVS Planning: Global Resource
Serialization document before making his decision.

Re: Future of DLC (Data Link Control)

2009-03-24 Thread Chris Mason
Dennis

I spotted SNA in your post so I figured I should know something about what
the post was about - but I'm left with barely a clue. Is DLC some new
shorthand for something other than what DLC has traditionally meant,
namely Data Link Control, the 2nd layer of the Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) model?

Well, I did quite a bit of research - it saves so much time when the original
post is s bit clearer about the subject! - and I discovered the Microsoft DLC
driver. Indeed Microsoft's DLC appears to be a building block in constructing
communication between some Microsoft programming, presumably BizTalk in
this instance, and something else. Microsoft's DLC is an implementation of
IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC).

The IEEE 802.2 is the key, specifically the connection-oriented version. It
implies communication over a LAN, typically Ethernet or Token Ring. I assume
there is some higher level software, maybe Microsoft's Host Integration Server
(HIS), which supports higher level SNA protocols so that, minimally - and
perhaps maximally - Low Entry Networking (LEN) is supported. Thus an LU
supported by say HIS can be in SNA session with another LU in a node
supporting the same or equivalent protocols over the same, potentially
segmented - including DLSw - LAN.

I was very amused to see DLC being described as a non-routed protocol.
Well, it is by definition - Duh!

If you are concerned about what you would require on the mainframe, today
it would be an OSA feature configured to be able to support a VTAM External
Communication Adapter (XCA) major node definition - like the old 3172 if you
ever had one of those. You can review what types of OSA feature might be
suitable from the following:

http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0088.html

You need to look for Yes in the SNA/APPN/HPR traffic column.

Do not be put off by APPN and HPR. For LEN support, you need only the
traditional subarea flavour of VTAM which you probably still maintain on each
of your LPARs minimally as a stand-alone VTAM in order to support TSO if
nothing else - a stand-alone VTAM just as it used to be in the mid to late '70s
when I first got to know VTAM - before it became a program product!

If it comes to it and you need help configuring it - if the documentation
advising how to use their IP-DLC (Enterprise Extender to the rest of the
world) from Microsoft is anything to go by, you *will* need help - please post
again in the fullness of time.

Thinking this through a bit, if the Microsoft DLC is an option in order to
support BizTalk then their IP-DLC (Enterprise Extender) should also be an
option. This is very much du jour for SNA support in an IP-centric world.
However, you *would* need to enable your VTAM for APPN (and HPR) in this
case.

Anyone aware of any stated DLC direction (like it's going away soon)?

I see no reason why the use of the OSA for SNA traffic could be heading for
the sunset. OSA features supporting the OSE (SNA-supporting) flavour of
CHPID seem to be being added from time to time to that Technote I
referenced. You will, of course, attract some anti-SNA bigots with an appeal
such as this. Be sure that any advice given has documentation from IBM
behind rather than simply being a warped opinion.

Re: z/OS 1.7 upgrade to 1.10

2009-03-24 Thread Brian Westerman
This seems to come up every few months. I have agreed to present a
session at the next share that (hopefully) will put this issue to rest.
There is so much FUD about this particular issue that it gets funny.

There is NOTHING,NOTHING,NOTHING against migrating to the current version of
z/OS directly from ANY version of z/OS, or even going back at least to
OS/390 2.7. Not only that, but with proper planning you can fall back as
well. All it takes is planning. Obviously there are incompatibilities, but
they aren't in the catalog that's for sure. I have performed well over 100
migrations/conversions from back levels of the OS to the then and now
current level of the OS. Compatibility isn't ever a problem, the only
problems that happen are when you fail to plan.

Can you update the catalogs from a newer version of the OS and still be okay
on your old version, the answer is YES. Should you do that without planning
things out properly, the answer is NO.

Will there be problems falling back? If you don't plan things out, the
answer is YES. If you were migrating from 1.9 to 1.10 and didn't plan it
out, you would have problems falling back. In fact, if you were just
putting maintenance on your running 1.10 system and you didn't plan things
out, you're going to have a problem falling back.

There are NO problems migrating your 1.7 JES spool data to the newest
version. You can use NJE, you can use Spool offload. Can you use NJE under
TCP, can you MAS the different versions of JES together? The answer is it
depends on if that support is available for the version your moving from.

Now, obviously, there are some things that you can't do on some
conversions/migrations. Just as a quick example, you may not be able to
create an IODF from an older version of the OS that can be used fully by the
newer version, and there are many other issues as well that can cause you
some small headaches. The problems are all well known and well documented
at this point in time, so there is no reason for not knowing this up front
when you convert.

NO ONE wants to do a migration of more than one OS level at a jump. Who in
there right mind would want to jump from z/OS 1.1 to 1.10 by first going to
1.3, then 1.5 then 1.7, then 1.9, then 1.10? You couldn't even get most of
those versions at this point in time so even thinking about multiple jumps
is silly. I can imagine how many systems programmers would be strung up by
the users if they were told to spend a month testing a new release of z/OS
only to be told now lets do it again a couple more times with ANOTHER
version that we have no plans on actually running!!

If the question was is there a spool compatibility issue backing out from
1.10 back to 1.7 should a backout become necessary. The answer is that you
should (any time you migrate to anything) backup your data, and offload your
spool data and restore it on the other end. If you need to move back from
1.10 to 1.7, you again backup your data and offload the spool data and
restore it on the other end. It doesn't matter how far you are jumping.
Backup the data, offload the spool, (unless you are going to use NJE and
co-exist these systems), then it's just a backup that you need.

If the question was can you read a 1.7 spool with a 1.10 JES, the answer is
YES, but why would you want to? That in itself is a very poor migration
plan. What are you saving by doing that, 15 minutes? Look at the cost if
ANYTHING were to happen, and it doesn't even have to be related to 1.10 or
1.7, what if you had a DASD problem? What if it rains on Tuesday? Your
plan should never be to jump first and think about recovery later.

ALWAYS plan for things to NOT work, ALWAYS plan for things to break. If you
don't have a plan, STOP until you do.

Sorry for the soapbox speech (again), but IBM does NOT want you to have to
perform multiple jumps to get to your target release. On the other hand,
it's not fair for IBM to have to test every possible fallback for you.
Believe me, IBM does NOT want to make it difficult for you to migrate to the
newest version of the OS. As I previously said, there is a lot of FUD on
this issue, you have to just look past it and create a proper plan that
makes sense.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't assume that the answer you get
is going to be the right one. You should ALWAYS have a plan, and ALL plans
should have contingencies for what to do, (and when to do it), if things
don't work out. Falling back to the old version is never fun, but it isn't
traumatic either. I will be willing to bet that if you plan for the fall
back, that even if you don't need to use it, you are NOT wasting your time.

Brian
