Re: Where can you get a Minor in Mainframe?
OK, if we're going to start the who is the grayest in the crowd, let me toss in my hat. 1968 - started correspondence classes in IBM through American Automation Training Center, Columbus, Ohio. 1969 - residence in same. Learned 402/403, punch, interpreter, PL/1, RPG, COBOL, etc. Due to a little interruption called Viet Nam didn't actually start twiddling bits until December 73. Currently most of our HSM work is going to an IBM virtual tape system. We are in the process of migrating off of IBM and going to STK. To get a jump on this we decided we would add the STK Virtual Tape drives to the Esoteric that's currently used by for the IBM VTS. The condition was caused by the bottom part of the controller/tape unit being powered off. Naive me thought that when one recycled the power on a tape unit like that all components and sub-components would come up. Time + $$ consumed on this was ridiculous. Re: Another BIG Mainframe Bites the Dust
As for the remarks from the gentleman from Samsung, very well written and explained without apologies. He said it worked for them. Now how many CEO's have seen that are contemplating the same thing? Could part of the fear of big iron be the age of the caretakers along with the burgeoning cost of the software needed to run them? If a company has a historical growth rate of 4% per annum and has to look at a major technology refresh in the processing area every 5-7 years (being generous there), then how long before they hit that plateau where the cost to sustain the system by personnel and software is truly onerous? I'd like to think there will be a mainframe somewhere to keep me fed until December 31, 2018, but is that realistic? Maybe not so much as in the 80's. Re: What's a programming language
Snipped: And according to this JCL is not a programming language, correct? Well, the L being language is more a bit of convenient identity. It could just as easily have been JCC - Job Control Constructs, or JCS - Job Control Statements. I tend to think of a programming language as commands or instructions that act on data for some sort of manipulation. It's easy to get wrapped up in semantics like in music. Ab and G# are the same note, but it depends on if you are ascending or descending. So, does the term programming language become vague, or precise? Is LISP a PL? Is REXX a PL? What about Algol or JOVIAL? I think it really boils down to personal experience and personal preference. Re: help with 878-10
Explanation: The error occurred when the system was trying to do one of the following: Satisfy a request made through the STORAGE macro Process an RU or VRU form of the GETMAIN macro Process an RU form of the FREEMAIN macro A reason code in the SDWACRC field of the system diagnostic work area (SDWA) explains the error: Code Explanation 04 There is not enough virtual system queue area (SQA) storage available to satisfy the request. 08 There is not enough virtual common service area (CSA) storage available to satisfy the request. 0C There is not enough virtual local system queue area (LSQA) storage available to satisfy the request. 10 There is not enough virtual private area storage available to satisfy the request. This is due to one of the following: A program is requesting virtual storage, but not subsequently freeing the storage. The region size specified is too small. An installation exit is requesting virtual storage from a V=R region before initialization of the region has completed. Programmer Response: A complete dump is necessary to diagnose this out of storage condition. If no dump was produced, SLIPs should be set to obtain a dump on problem recurrence. Further debugging information may be found in Informational APAR II05506. An abend 80A can cause this same condition, so both SLIPs should be set as follows: SLIP SET,COMP=878,A=SVCD,SDATA=(ALLNUC, PSA,SQA,CSA,LPA,TRT,LSQA,RGN),END SLIP SET,COMP=80A,A=SVCD,SDATA=(ALLNUC, PSA,SQA,CSA,LPA,TRT,LSQA,RGN),END Also, depending on the reason code, do one of the following: 10 Try increasing the region size specified in the region parameter on the JOB or EXEC statement in the JCL for the job. However, if the cause of the problem is actually that a program is requesting virtual storage and not freeing it, the abend will recur when the program uses the virtual storage in the larger region. Re: Overhead caused by LE options with (XREF, MAP, LET)
??? Snipped I would be 99.9% certain that they have no effect on run-time performance, except that LET might lead to S0C1s and such. They have a HUGE effect on compiler performance. XREF may double the amount of output produced, and that will double the EXCPs, and certainly increase the CPU cycles. Similar for MAP. end I guess it depends on how much importance one places on the XREF and so on. If the program is in development, it might be very handy. If it's a recompile for a new release, maybe not so much. Re: SYS1.BRODCAST security?
SNIP It is documented in SAG (RACF Security Admin. Guide) Appendix: Security for System Data Sets. However the recommendation has changed. Now (z/OS 1.7) it is READ. Re: ICKDSF ERASE VOLUME Too Slow
However one of the methods to erase data is to destroy the media. Destroying disk modules could be quite easy. Re: ICKDSF ERASE VOLUME Too Slow
My only intent was to play devil's advocate on this. Case in point. We had the last active Honeywell 800 in the Air Force. It used 1 metal reel tapes with plastic leaders. We started to run low, the call went out and we got about 10,000 in from another site. We started out to check all headers, etc. In the meantime a new RJE style machine went in and the 800 was immediately useless. But now we had close to 20,000 tapes to dispense of. We started out degaussing them, but at 1-2 minutes per tape, it was tedious and very time intensive. (Cut off leader, degauss tape, reband, pack, etc.) Finally cooler heads prevailed and the consensus was who in the world was going to read a 1 tape? So while I suggest purge before destruction, you can see where some thought processes run. The recent spate of itinerant laptops makes one stop to think. The answer is: Go to the operator console on the ATL, hit the Commands pull down. Select Insert Unlabeled Cartridges, enter the VOLSER to be used in the related cell slot for the convenience door, and load the tapes in there in that order. Select OK and away it goes. When it's done, cancel out. Gotta love this job! Re: Interesting Challenge
You may have to alter the CBRUXENT Cartridge Installation Exit to allow foreign tapes at your site as well. Also, if memory serves me, you also have to go to the Unassigned Tapes and do an Insert then click Take Action to get it in the ATL database. The Unassigned Tapes panel usually pops up when I do an Insert Unlabelled Cartridge anyway. Well, I got them loaded and now I'll see what happens when I try to find them in the ATL and use them. Re: Non-SMP/e packaging
I once installed a product called TASA from INFOSECINC. The package is downloadable from the company's web site as a binary file. It then is TSO RECEIVED into a samplib. The supplied install jobs do all the SMPE stuff. Snippage Even TASID from IBM is done that way. But for an overall product install sometimes SMPe makes sense, other times not so much. 3480 to 3490
Greetings to all. We are trying to dump our 3480 drives. Knowing that 3490 can read 3480, we'd like to facilitate a way to do that that would not entail a bazillion JCL changes. Options being considered: Esoteric magic in the IODF Uncatalog and recatalog via IEHPROGM or IDCAMS I'm extrapolating the data to those volumes that have good information, that is cataloged datasets, on them. Then I will double check those to see if any have stacked information. Has anyone gone through a similar exercise? What was your modus operandi? All contributions gratefully accepted. Re: Upgrade from Z/OS 1/4 to Z/OS 1.7 or Z/OS 1.8 ?
What does this actually mean in the real world? At one point I was under the impression that this only came into effect if you were sharing spool space or other datasets between LPARs. In a simple configuration like ours (3 LPARs, no sharing of anything except the hardware), what specifically would be the implications of migrating directly from 1.4 to 1.8. IF you don't want to share things like catalogs and spools, and want to do a cold cutover, go for it. Ive been from ESA 4.3 to OS/390 2.5 and from OS/390 2.10 to ZOS 1.4 this way and survived it. What is meant by the N+3 is that with coexistence maintenance on you can run your current system and bring up a newer one in a plex'd environment and allow for shared spool, catalogs, etc. It boils down to personal choice. If your 1.8 would not be allowed to touch the other side's files, then don't let it stop you. The listers are trying to give you the usual caveats about these things, not tell you will suffer male pattern baldness and fallen arches by deviating. Re: 3480 to 3490
There is a tool on the CBT tape to fix the catalog entries. Watch for anything that adds data onto an existing tape, DISP=MOD or FSEQ +1, it will break. After those 2, I think it's pretty easy. We had UNIT=CART in our JCL, so IODF change covered that. I think we're going to go the esoterics route. I analyzed the tapes and came up with things like 15 datasets (GDGs) on a volume or a dataset that ran in excess of 10 volumes. A couple of TLMS reports, a couple of REXX execs and there you go. Re: Non-SMP/e packaging
Whether one uses SMP/e or a vendor equivalent, it produces a more sound system. I've had products that are load and go (Plug and play?) and while they may work OK, maintenance is usually a module level replace and you aren't really sure what you've got. I've used Activator with similar success to SMP/e, and I've even got my own way of updating exits whereas they aren't usermods. I'm wondering if the originator of the thread is leery of SMP/e, or feels that there aren't enough hours to do it.
