Hillgang meeting 28 Mar
While I believe all our meetings are good ones, I think the upcoming one is overflowing with VM and Linux goodness: Date: March 28, 2012 Location: Computer Associates 2291 Wood Oak Drive Herndon VA Time: 8:30 for 9:00 until 2pm STASH - Jim Porell IBM This session is an introduction to the Smart Terminal Architecture with Secure Hosts (STASH). STASH utilizes the System z Bladecenter Extension (zBX) as a desktop hosting environment running trusted thin client software. Users can take advantage of the System z for computing and management capabilities, greatly reducing the number of servers and thin client deployment costs. Other technologies that complete the environment are workload management software and a fraud detection solution that mitigates insider threat. By combining mainframe virtualization management, security, and thin client technology, organizations will be able to take advantage of the power of the mainframe extended to trusted virtual desktop environments. Speaker Bio: Jim Porell is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Deputy CTO for Federal Sales. In this role, Jim consults with and for US Government agencies to assist them in removing costs, reducing risk and improving security and resilience, while satisfying new business proposals. Most recently, he was directing the Business Development activities for the mainframe. Before that he was Chief Architect for the System z Software Brand and the chairperson of the System z Software Design council which includes all IBM mainframe operating systems and middleware, and looks at synergy across servers and the evolution of each of IBM's server platforms and operating systems. In each of these roles, Jim's focus is to ensure that IBM deploys or acquires technology across the System z operating systems, that work consistently with other operating systems, to enable application growth for IBM's customers, either by writing their own new applications or deploying new code from Independent Software Vendors. Jim has been a security consultant to customers and the US Government for over ten years and has co-authored several books on security. Jim has been with IBM for 32 years in a variety of management and technical positions across the test, development and brand organizations in the Hudson Valley region of New York and now working in the District of Columbia. z/VM 6.2 Performance Update - Bill Bitner IBM Significant changes were introduced to z/VM with Version 6 Release 2 (GA December 2, 2011). This presentation will discuss the associated performance changes, in particular, the performance of Single System Image (SSI) clusters and Live Guest Relocation (LGR). How quickly can z/VM relocate a running Linux virtual machine? What factors influence LGR performance? Does LGR activity influence the performance of other virtual machines? All these questions and more, will be answered in this session. Linux on System z: Some Get it and Others Don¹t - Len Diegel One of the challenges of System z (mainframe) advocates today is getting the message through to upper management. This session covers several issues, including the cultural differences, inhibitors, and real customer situations and the results of their migrations. The session is based on data collected by Velocity Software, IBM, CA, Gartner, and others. z/VM 6.2 Increasing the Endless Possibilities of Virtualization - Bill Bitner IBM By now you have probably heard about z/VM 6.2 delivering on the promise of Single System Image (SSI) Clusters and Live Guest Relocation (LGR). It all sounds cool, but are you struggling with where to use it? Wondering what makes it different than other virtualization solutions? This session has two objectives. First, to validate that this isn't just another clustering or guest mobility solution. There are over 2500 years of virtualization experience behind SSI and LGR, and that experience shows through. Second, we discuss some ways that SSI and LGR allow you greater flexibility and better business models. Some of these are fairly conventional, some are a little off the normal thought process. $HASP5121
I cannot locate the message description for the following in z/OS V1R12.0 JES2 Messages SA22-7537-10: $HASP5121 NJE L3.SR1 ERROR RECEIVING NETWORK DATA SET HEADER, RC=16 It's accompanied by message: $HASP5532 NJE L3.SR1 SEVERE ERROR - HEADER/TRAILER BUILD ERROR RC=8 Which does have an explanation. A JES2 trace using ids 21-24 shows the NJE Job Header (NJH) but not the Data Set Header it appears to be complaining about so I can't identify what in particular it is objecting to. Does anyone have any insight into 5121? This occurs on both z/OS 1.9 and 1.12. ATTLS configuration
I¹m attempting to enable ATTLS on my z/OS 1.12 and 1.9 systems for the purpose of running secured NJE. I have installed the z/OS Configuration Assistant to create the appropriate policies, created certificates on both systems and placed them into the appropriate rings, and added the TCPCONFIG TTLS statement. According to the a SHARE presentation I then had to run some further RACF commands using TCPIP.SEZAINST(EZARACF) as the starting point. It seems to me that the order of statements in the job is strange (i.e. when doing the INITSTACK stuff it refers to users defined further down in the job stream). Also, I get the messages (below) from the EZARACF job. As far as I can tell the ADDUSER syntax is correct so I'm not sure why it's complaining. Also, I assume the REFRESH of RACLIST(SECLABEL) is failing because I've forgotten to do something with SYSHIGH. Has anyone gone through this process? If so, did you have a cheat sheet. The SHARE presentation is good but it does state that it's skipped over some steps for the sake of keeping the presentation within its time allocation. Next Hillgang Meeting
The next meeting of Hillgang, the DC z/VM and Linux on z user group, will be at the Herndon office of CA on October 19 (8:30 for 9). The current abstracts are below. I'm expecting an update to one of these abstracts and maybe an addition to the program as well. z/VM Update - Richard Lewis IBM --- Have you heard about IBM's Statement of Direction regarding Single System Image (SSI) clusters and Guest Mobility? If so, then you are probably wondering how you're going to get from here to there. This session will explore various methodologies for converting existing z/VM environments into an SSI cluster. Manage, Monitor and Protect Linux on z - CA -- As cost reduction and operational efficiency continue to be key IT drivers, organizations need more effective ways to evaluate, provision and manage workloads on the most efficient platform possible. Join us for a discussion on how the use of a holistic approach to running, monitoring and managing Linux on System z can help you achieve the economies of scale you need to grow your business while lowering risk and cost. User Experiences with DataMart on Linux for System z at FMS - Jim Moling --- This session will present a user experience that focuses on the Linux for System z implementation of a hybrid DataMart model that incorporates an operational data store (ODS) model with the traditional DataMart model. This hybrid implementation draws upon the traditional data mart model to provide aggregate data and the ODS model to provide more detailed transactional data. As such, the configuration and implementation using Virtual Linux Servers under z/VM on a z10 processor will be presented, which includes the use of IBM's Websphere DataStage product for extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of data into a DB2 based repository from several external databases. Challenges faced and resolved during the implementation of this configuration will be discussed. Finally, resource requirements, i.e. IFL, memory and SAN space as well as performance statistics of the production DataMart implementation will be presented. [NEWBIE] Compiling and Binding 64-bit mode C programs
I am experimenting building 64-bit C programs on my z/OS 1.9 system using the following: #include stdio.h #include stdlib.h int main(int argc, char **argv) { fprintf(stdout,Hello world!\n); } When I use the supplied proc ³EDCQCBG² to do a compile, link and go I get the following message from the bind step: IEW2456E 9207 SYMBOL FPRINTF UNRESOLVED. MEMBER COULD NOT BE INCLUDED FROM THE DESIGNATED CALL LIBRARY. The output of the Bind step shows a reference to FPRINTF: IEW2322I 1220 159IMPORT CODE64,CELQV003,'fprintf',06D IEW2322I 1220 160IMPORT CODE64,CELQV003,'FPRINTF',06D A 31-bit build works okay using the EDCCLG procedure. Instead of using the procedure I created the JCL from scratch. Re: [NEWBIE] Compiling and Binding 64-bit mode C programs
Actually I'm having fun. Gotta love zPDT and the ADCD. I have NJE connections to z/OS from my Linux system where I'm doing my editing etc so I submit jobs from there and hence the need for JCL. The good news (for you!) is that there is really no good reason to use JCL to build C/C++ code on z/OS - Just use make along with the one of the cc/c89/c99/xlc commands (these are aliases that invoke the z/OS xlC compiler with different options), and do your builds from the z/OS Unix shell (under ssh, if you have Ported Tools OpenSSH installed, or tty telnet otherwise. You'll hate running the Unix shell under 3270 TSO :-). Your main reference for using these commands will be the z/OS XL C/C++ User's Guide, (see CH 7: Compiling and binding in the z/OS UNIX System Services environment). If you want your load module to eventually run from a PDS or PDSE, then just copy it from the Unix file system as part of your Makefile: cp -X lmod //'HLQ.MY.PDS(LMOD)' (the -X option is for copying load modules / binder objects) FWIW: If you are using C, then you can run from a regular PDS, but if you are using C++, then you are usually forced into using a PDSE.
