Re: FICON CTC

2008-03-07 Thread R.S.

Mark,
Thank you for the correction.

However it's *new* information. I just checked z/OS 1.7 version of the
manual - no mention about FCTC. Does it mean FCTC is not supported on
1.7 or just undocumented ? I don't know. I checked summary of changes -
no mention about FCTC.

BTW: It remained me, I submitted an RCF for the book. AFAIK I asked to
remove obsolete information about HW, correct some jobs, etc.
I just found in summary of changes: Information about IBM 3088
Multisystem Channel Communication Unit (MCCU) is removed.

Information about SYSCTLG has been removed.

AFAIK not. You cannot make GRS ring over FCTC links.
Note: you can make GRS ring over XCF links which can be defined over
FCTC. However XCF means sysplex (at least basic).

I've succeeded in getting the IO devices online on each z/OS system. But
when I IPL with GRS turned on I get
ISG046E CTC 4C00 DISABLED DUE TO HARDWARE ERROR CODE=05
On 1 system and
ISG046E CTC 3C00 DISABLED DUE TO HARDWARE ERROR CODE=05
on the other.

I've looked at II14241 and verified that the CHPIDs say Initialization
complete.

Is there some way to verify that each end is REALLY talking to each other,
rather than just rely on the fact that the device(s) are online?

CUADD on the control unit must match the LPAR you want to talk *TO* with
the CTC's on that CU. Also, the CTC devices on that CU should be defined to
the OS config for the LPAR's you will talk *FROM*. I always need a pad of
paper when I connect CTC's...

There's a z9/z990/z900 redbook, the z900 doc ID is SB10-7034-01, ESCON

No. You don't need director.
Depending on your topology, the director can be required, but again, it
depends.
BTW: If you want multiple-LPAR, single-CPC CTC, you can use the
following options:

1. classic. Two FICON ports connected by a loop.
2. other, IMHO quite funny:
CPC_FICON_PORT - FICON_cable - switch.

I thought the HCD reports and the K command would only work if the CTC
included a Director. The original poster was trying to define a CTC with point-

Change this from HCD option 4, put 'C' next to the CU, press enter, then
scroll right once. There is a column for 'CU Add'

Also, when you define the devices, remove MP from access list to
3C00-3C08. Same goes for BP with 4C00-4C08. HCD should warn you if you
didn't (can cause a loop).

In HCD you can produce a CTC Connection Report. Have you done that and

In HCD option 3 then 1. Set LIMIT reports to no (2) and put a / in the

Re: FICON CTC MIH

2007-01-29 Thread Bill Wilkie
My experience with MIH in general has been that it is a throwback to the
days when an I/O got lost and everything just hung. For those old enough to
remember the 3330, you could pop the plug on the disk to force an interrupt
to wake it up. IBM added the MIH to say basically, that if I haven't heard
anything about that I/O in that interval, cancel the first I/O and redrive
it. I doubt seriously that too many I/o's are lost anymore so I would say
just take it up to about 15 minutes. Use the setios command.

This is a very misunderstood parameter. For many years working for a major
disk vendor, systems programmers would set the value low if they wanted good
response time from a volume. All it did is actually elongate the I/O because
it redrove it several times. If the MIH is large enough, the I/O will finish
the first time.

You will see this on programs like syncsort that may read an entire disk in
1 i/o. 5-10 secs will never be enough. Even if only to take MIH out of the
picture, set it high. Most disk vendors now are probably recommending at
least 5 minutes or larger.

We haven't got anything specified in IECIOSxx but are having some

We're wondering if there is a recommendation or what other sites are
