Re: Suggestions for New Laptop.
Re: The Macintoshes other people mentioned, a few suggestions: 1. As a general rule, don't bother buying hard disk and memory upgrades from Apple. Buy Apple's smallest RAM and hard disk configurations, then buy those upgrades separately elsewhere. Usually the price works out better that way, although some comparison shopping is obviously worthwhile. You can also buy a USB hard drive case and put the original Apple-supplied hard disk in that case to use for backup and other purposes. Currently you can get a 250 GB 5400 RPM notebook hard disk for well under $200 on the open market, for example. 2. Apple offers refurbished Macintoshes at their online store. The warranty is the same, and I think they're a better value. You have to check back from time to time since stock varies. 3. The original Core Duo MacBooks run a bit hotter (though they're still perfectly safe). I would advise going with the Core 2 Duo processor instead. The Core 2 Duo MacBooks will expand up to 3 GB of RAM (4 GB maximum for the newest MacBook Pros) versus 2 GB for the original Core Duo models. RAM expansion is probably the first limiting factor in any notebook's useful design longevity. I wouldn't worry about processor speed at all. The differences are quite minor in the real world, and faster means hotter and shorter battery life, ceteris paribus. 4. VirtualBox for Mac OS X is one of several ways to run Windows and/or Linux on the Macintosh. That and Apple's Boot Camp are no extra charge. VirtualBox's features are more limited than Parallels Desktop and VMware, but it's adequate for many people. 5. You don't have to buy the AppleCare extended warranty until just before the standard one year warranty expires, and you don't have to buy it directly from Apple. Shop around. Some credit cards also offer extended warranties. The whole question of whether to get an extended warranty or not is an interesting one. 6. Apple's notebooks do not have a built-in modem. If you need one Apple sells a slick USB modem. Also, if you plan to use the Mac for presentations or with an external monitor, it's a good idea to buy the VGA-style cable adapter. 7. Apple.com's expedited shipping probably doesn't do any good, so don't bother. 8. There are various Web sites, like dealmac.com and lowendmac.com, which chronicle getting the best deals on Macintoshes. I always bought IBM ThinkPads until they sold out to Lenovo. After that I went with a Dell Latitude D810. Despite more than doubling its purchase price with upgrades, it's *never* performed up to expectation. And, I've *never* had any satisfaction from their Tech Support! 17" screen AND 200gb drive...? Now that's a machine! Next time I upgrade I will definitely look into the HP. Once I move on from my current employer, I will take a look at that DV9500t you mentioned. I too upgraded my latest Dell (two 100gb HD's, memory, wireless NIC) although I only had to replace one item under warranty. (knock on wood). About the only trouble I ever had with Dell was when I was in the process of ordering my desktop. I became so frustrated I wanted to reach through the phone, all the way to India, and strangle the person on the other end of the line. About the only real problems I ever had was with the HD's. I keep all of my machines on 24x7 and laptop HD's are not designed for that kind of use. So, every two years I need to replace one of the drives. I still have my first Dell laptop and it still works but just about every component was changed at some point during the 4 year warrantee. So for the same money you can get a lot more laptop at HP 200+gig hard drive, 17” high gloss screen, Core 2 Duo processor, I bought the dv8000 in 2006 and love it, never any problems knock wood, the new dv9500t looks awesome, I bet you could run z/OS 1.8 on it lol. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: Suggestions for New Laptop.
For all of my non-mainframe clients I suggest they, or I on their behalf, monitor Dell's Outlet where Dell sells refurbished/returned machines. The machines sell for up to 35% less than a "brand new" machine but with ALL of the warranties, etc... Last week I found a great deal on a laptop for a client. It cost the client 750 and the original price was between 910-940. It was delivered with XP, and in this case, Media Center 2005. Great deal! You need to check the site every few hours and be ready to make an immediate decision! If you find something you like, you get 15 minutes to decide or it goes back into the pool. I, personally, have purchased only 1 brand new machine from Dell. Every other machine (laptop, server, desktop...) I purchased through their Outlet. The laptop I use day-to-day cost me 27xx and the original price was around 3500. I have owned Toshiba Satellite Pros (2) and Tecras (2) for the last 12 years; I have no desktop machine and my laptop runs nearly 24x7, though I've started using Stand-By more frequently to reduce machine wear. After some frustration with Toshiba customer service and a few too many hard-drive and power supply depot-repair experiences, I made the switch to IBM ThinkPad two year ago, and I'll never go back to Toshiba, unless I see some change with the Lenovo purchase and the company's attitude to customer service -- as of today, I'm quite happy with the decision and I'm looking forward to my next machine in 2008. I do recommend purchasing the 3-year warranty, if not included in the price, and you can typically call the company to purchase the additional 2-year coverage, after purchase. It's an individual decision though as to whether or not one must touch a particular brand/model machine (keyboard layout / form-factor) before purchasing, so the last consideration I would contribute is whether you buy online (my preference is CDW -- they have great ready-to-ship machines with no-fluff, installed OEM business software packages, and they will most likely match other mail-order prices) or at your local electronics store (we have no such big-box gadget here in Key West, Florida, and I don't do RadioShack, not even for batteries anymore). Regards, Scott Barry SBBWorks, Inc. P. S. Purchase (or upgrade) as much memory as you can afford, and if possible purchase the largest single-chip size (for example, one 1GB chip instead of two 512MB chips), in order to consider an upgrade say at holiday time! -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

--- Hello All. I am in the market for a new notebook/laptop. I am looking at DeLL, Toshiba and recommendations from this group. Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated. One thing that has turned me off is having no choice between Vista & XP Pro. TIA I've been very satisfied with my 7-year old Toshiba. No Wi-Fi but it runs all my M$ Office pgms without any problems. Ran slow when I sarted up a TN3270 Client at the same time, but a memory upgrade took care of that. Battery seems to last longer than friends' Sony's and IBM Thinkpads. Heard some bad things about Dell support lately, but I've never needed to call Toshiba support.
My experiences with a Mac: First, I have two of them. Dec. 2006 I bought a MacPro 3gh, 2gb ram, 500gb hard drive. 23" Apple Cinema Display. One awesome machine. Not cheap: $5K+. June 2007 I bought a Macbook "white" for the house with Airport Express (a wireless hub). Again, it's awesome. My son loves it, and he has pretty much claimed it. I discourage him from going to MySpace, Facebook or any other site a teenager might happen across, with the PC, as I've already spent $300+ this year on virus, malware, and browser helper object removal. However, on the Mac - it's not an issue. (BTW, I ended up getting a 30GB iPod Video for $50 in the deal after the $199 rebate "educator" offer). On the Macbook, I installed Bootcamp and then Win XP Pro + Office Professional, so it's my "grab it and go, cross platform development machine", like when I go to the in-laws to visit - I find a corner and enjoy myself thoroughly. (Ticks my wife off sometimes though) My wife works for the local school district, and last year got an offer to buy Win XP Pro for something ridiculous like $12. I hopped on that, not knowing what for, and also bought Office Pro, Frontpage and Visio. I think the total bill was $28. For the Bootcamp install - it was perfect. When you boot Windows - it's pretty much Windows! Since the Mac keyboard is a bit different, there are a few shortcut keys that are changed. That's about it though in the differences department. I thought I would want to use Microsoft Office for the Mac when I bought the MacPro. (It comes with a 30 day trial.) I opened it once to see what it looked like - and I've never gone into it again. My biggest concern in going to the Mac was compatibility with "the rest of the world". Not. Now, do people still send me Word docs and Powerpoint presentations? Sure. And I forward them to my PC. No biggy. Would I rather have a PDF? Sure. After being on the PC for so long, the Mac does take some getting used to, of course. The keyboard shortcuts are a bit different, and that frustrated me at first. But, they are there. Some don't make sense, like having to hit 3 keys instead of 2 for common tasks. Some are better. The internet browser that comes with a Mac is called Safari. It works pretty good. I could download Firefox, but find Safari sufficient. (Plus, I do cross platform development that requires Safari on the Mac). Mail on the Mac is "ok". Outlook is more robust. For personal use, Mail on the Mac is fine. I run OS X (pronounced OS Ten), also called Tiger. Leopard, the next operating system, is coming out soon. If you get a Tiger machine, and want to upgrade to Leopard later, I think it will cost $129 (US) or round abouts. If you have any experience with Unix, you'll like the Mac. If you don't like I didn't, it's a great way to learn line commands, the BASH or tsch (sp?) shells and such. On Windows, you have Windows Explorer. On a Mac, it's called Finder. I like them both, but I like Finder better. Mac comes with a lot of the opensource software already installed - Apache Web server, Ruby, Perl, Python (ruby, perl & python are scripting languages). Also, with a Mac - you get 2 CDs. One is the operating system, and the second contains an Apple product called XCode. XCode is an IDE ("the" IDE) for developing software on a Mac. It comes with pretty much EVERYTHING you need for developing on the Mac - a C/C++ compiler, Java SDK, Carbon & Cocoa (two Apple frameworks for developing GUI apps), Objective C (the language of choice for developing with Cocoa), and probably a litany of others. The laptop won't come with a Mouse. I installed a wireless 3-button optical USB mouse on mine. The desktops come with what's called a Mighty Mouse. I haven't used it, as I use a 3-button/wheeled mouse that I already had. I would recommend them to anyone. There are people that have had issues, but I haven't. I still find Windows 2000 professional the best choice. Intel supplies all drivers for it, also wireless... In terms of *relative resources used* versus *resources available to the user* I experience roughly the following: w2K 25 -75 WXP 50 -50 WV 75-25 So go for a laptop with an all Intel board and get the drivers for W2K from the Intel site.
