Just curious: why JAVA and not WPS? WPS is code-compatible with SAS.

They are indeed, but I don't have enough skills (yet..?) to rewrite bits of
x3270 I want.

I have looked and attempted on a couple of occasions, and I've always failed.
Because it relies on only X, and not QT or GTK, none of the features of either
KDE or GNOME (or whatever that's called these days) appear to be used. I'm
guessing that's because it's generically available to all Linux, and possibly
beyond.

One day maybe I'll spend time and effort doing something with it!

The latest checkins to the x3270 source tree are this month, so obviously Paul
Mattes is still at it, like 20 years later.

Open source will still be there when the vendors wander away in search of fresh

Hi all

 There are 12 members in the sysplex(NP1A-NP1M)

 At 15:41:46  this afternoon,SA issue "  $ CO JQ, ALL, H> 6" command
triggered by HASP050 JNUM and JQES > 80% message on NP1F.

At about 15: 43: 52.58,  SA issue "  $ CO JQ, ALL, H> 6" command  triggered by
HASP050 JNUM and JQES > 80% message on  all other members(except NP1F)

On all other members (except NP1F),HASP263 WAITING FOR ACCESS TO JES2
CHECKPOINT VOLUME NP1SL1 message is shown every 12 seconds after 15:41:46.

From 15: 44: 10.03 to  15: 44: 47.38 ,   HASP003 RC = (84), CO JQ - JOB IS
BUSY, TRY LATER is shown on all members.

However, JNUM and JQES remained at more than 70% until 16:00

Befer 16:00,the output of JES2 is purged very very slowly .After 16:00 ,the
output of JES2 is purged very very quickly.

The questions:

Q1. From 15:41:46 -16:00:00 ,it is about 18 minuts. During this 18 minutes, why
the output is purged very very slowly?

Q2 Do we need to issue " $ CO JQ, ALL, H> 6" command on all members?

Q3. How to speed up to purge the output?

Below is the definition

MASDEF   SHARED=CHECK,
 DORMANCY=(20,500),
 HOLD=10,
 RESTART=YES,
 AUTOEMEM=ON,
 LOCKOUT=1200

SMF/CMF are least of our concern at the moment. We are initially inclined for
any automated tool that can
A.read SAS PDBs and convert them to DB2 tables and/or flat file. Tool must
cater take for packed, COMP data elements.
B. Can read SAS code and give us some basic converted Java code
C. Will be good if the tool can convert DB2I calls to JDBC calls

We have tonnes of reporting even business application logic in SAAS which over

mostly system/ security related reporting and we can mend our ways..

No! If all LPARS are sharing the JES2, just choose one LPAR to issue all these

Is JES2 getting the highest priority? Or rather do these commands after hours.

About the timing issues and slow/fast processing around 16:00, my question is
what else is JES2 doing in around that time beside handling your commands?

Re: SAS - DB2 conversion to Java

2017-11-23 Thread Barry Merrill
We have many MXG users who have moved their SAS Processing to Linux or Windows,
where only a Workstation license may be needed, and there is no download of the
SMF data file; the SAS ftp access method reads the z/OS data and only the output
SAS datasets need disk space on the ASCII platform.

And that eliminates the risk and cost of reprogramming.

I'd also be VERY concerned about the execution time if your applications are
high volume under Java versus under SAS.

And if the reason for DB2 is for your DB2 DBAs that only speak SQL, they
can use the free PROC SQL and issue SQL calls and reports to their heart's
content.

And you have the full power of SAS ODS to create output in HTML, EXCEL, etc.

With the already working and tested SAS language program unchanged.

What version of z/OS?

When you use the RM command in SDSF what are the values for your

How many Spool volumes do you have and what size (MOD9 MOD27...)

How are your checkpoint datasets defined? Is CKPT1 on CF and CKPT2 on DASD?
Or both dasd or both CF?

If JES2 is in CF, what is its size?. You may need to use the CF SIZER on
www.ibm.com to see how much more you need.

Jes2 had a priority of what commands get run when. Its main function is to run
work. So commands like PURGE will take a while to run if JES2 is busy.

My guess is you have more work than you have resources. If you monitor your
resource usage with the $JD commands, you may need to look at increasing what
you have in JES2.

Good news, JES2 will only take what it needs. So if you increase JQE from
(example only) 1000 to 1 - it should not have a big impact on JES2, the
ckpt or spool providing you have sufficient size already. If you do not, JES2
will not honor the command and instead tell you how much more you need to make
the change.

Tom Brennan Vista remains both well and fully supported.
It is, was, and will always be the best.

It probably is the best, but it also has, at least for me, a few annoying
"features":

- the ind$file dialog cannot be resized (I cannot use FTP)
- the File transfer settings menu lacks a pull-down with all options
- it's not possible to keep macros in multiple directories
- accidentally recording a macro (while trying to play it) doesn't warn you that
the current macro will be overwritten

Personal Communications and Host On-Demand both support GDDM graphics, as a
notable/important feature. I don't think there's anything else on Linux and
Macintosh that supports GDDM except HOD.

Re: Shocking Bug in Latest PCOMM Release

2017-11-23 Thread J R
I've detested PCOMM for decades. User configuration never seemed friendly and,
even with perseverance, didn't always cater to valid combinations. IND$FILE
was like using a screwdriver to bang in a nail. Then there was the XMIT hoop
to jump through.

The best I've ever been able to use to get my job done were Tom Brennan's Vista
and Hummingbird FTP.  Paradise!

I suspect the best tool for converting SAS databases to other formats
might be SAS itself. I assume it has interfaces to other types of database.

My initial thought on converting the code was that SAS code would be too
different to Java, and you would have to work out the specs and rewrite.
However, I googled "convert sas to java" and there seem to be a number
of services and/or products claiming to do it.

I do think the generated code might be less than optimal, and you would
miss out on a lot of the benefits of Java. Rewriting at least the most
resource intensive programs might be worth doing.

Great advice.  The pareto principle.
