s390 Debian 5.0.5 install

2010-09-01 Thread Alain Benveniste
I've downloaded the Debian for s390.
I got a kernel panic at boot from ipl 00c. It seems to be a very well kno
wn
problem on the net. I found some linux commands on the web to bypass the
problem but it still doesn't work...
If someone has a bootable initrd that works, I would be curious to know t
he
solution...

Thanks

Hi,

I just downloaded the files from debian and used the following profile.exec

/* REXX EXEC TO IPL DEBIAN GNU/LINUX */
/* FOR S/390 FROM THE VM READER. */
/**/
'CP CLOSE RDR'
'PURGE RDR ALL'
'SPOOL PUNCH * RDR'

'PUNCH PARMFILE DEBIAN * (NOHEADER'
'PUNCH KERNEL2 DEBIAN * (NOHEADER'
'CHANGE RDR ALL KEEP NOHOLD'
'CP IPL 000C CLEAR'

The PARMFILE must be a textfile the others are binary files.

Re: s390 Debian 5.0.5 install

2010-09-01 Thread Dave Jones
Hi, Alain.

Some things to check for when installing Debian:

1) do the MD5SUM values of the downloaded file match those of specified
in the download directory?

2) did you download the binary files using F 80?

3) sometimes kernel panics during install can mean that there is not
enough virtual storage available to unzip the initrd file; Try
increasing the virtual storage size of your virtual machine.

Hope this is of some help.

Unnecessary /cpdvd folder Was: Electronic Delivery - DDR or DVD?

2010-09-01 Thread gclovis

Alan,

About a year ago I have one problem installing zVM 5.4 (native LPAR), into
a Customer site.
The problem was with the HMC keyboard: impossible to use the Slash key.
Yes, no / available. No spare keyboard, no corrections found, no
keyboard setup available, etc.
The installation process needs to specify /cpdvd to start the
installation.
The circumvention was copy the DVD to another, directly into the root,
without the folder cpdvd. After it, the installation was done normally,
without specify any directory.
My question: why to put the data on a unnecessary folder, inserting one
point-of-fault? Can you ask the development guys?
Thanks a lot.

Don't worry - you won't receive a tape, just a DVD.

Second TCPIP MDISK 191 Format

My USER DISKMAP is updated and active:

I'm able to link to it using: LINK TCPIPV 191 291 SR, but the access command
returns:

access 291 r
DMSACP112S R(291) device error

What am I missing here?

Hi Ed,

That looks pretty much like what we have. The Library Manager as a

In practice, I think of it as the web interface that lets me control the

physically different.

The 3592 tape cartridge is a physically different tape than the 3590
 cartridge.

what this really does other than

Did you open a hardware PMR? (You know the old saying: If a client has a

nothing evil about that, even if it seems (today) unnecessary.

According to information I can find, Portuguese keyboards in Brazil have
the forward slash in the same location as the US, right next to the right
shift key. If you had a Portuguese (Portugal) PC keyboard, it would be
shift-7 (the same place it's located on 3270 keyboards).

Ok, the Customer was instructed to open a PMH that day.
I didn't know the results... Something like equipment was installed by
third part, no IBM support... But it is another story...

It's a limit in the IBM OCO driver. BSI has asked that the driver be
updated, but I don't think IBM has committed to it yet.

The other thing to know is that when you boot the HMC the first time, it
asks for your country. If the keyboard and the country setting didn't
match, that could have been the source of the problem. (Let no one think
that the IBM 3270 had a monopoly on keyboard/codepage confusion)

removing static routes

2010-09-01 Thread Phillip Gramly
we have a vswitch set up on VM 4.4
I have a VSE that uses VM as a gateway - it's IP address is specified in the
GATEWAY section of my PROFILE TCPIP
I have IPLed this VSE on 3.1 with TCPIP support for the vswitch,
but the NIC doesn't come up. IPL605E error RC 122

I think it is because VM's TCPIP still has it specified.
Is there some command to delete it dynamically? I don't want to restart VM's
TCPIP.
This is a test system, so I want to be able to take it out of the GATEWAY
settings and then put it back in when I have to give it back to the test group.
