Hello again. :)

I successfully completed INSTDVD last night and continued this morning

with the steps for the new system IPL (p 118 in the Guide for Automated

Installation and Service version 5 release 4).

I logged back on to the user from which I executed INSTDVD, and followed

the steps to IPL (i.e. system clear, terminal conmode 3270, etc.).

When I tried to IPL the new z/VM system:

 ipl fea clear loadparm 0009

I got the message:

HCPCLT040E Device 0FEA does not exist

Is there something special I have to do (other than the steps outlined in

Step 4) to setup the user to IPL the new z/VM system? Here are the dasd

addresses:

DASD 0FEA 540RES
DASD 0FEB 540SPL
DASD 0FEC 540PAG
DASD 0FED 540W01
DASD 0FEE 540W02

Thanks for the help.

Looks good to me. The difference is the others are minidisks
and these DASD are dedicated/attached.

That's what you want to see -- the others are minidisks on volumes attached
to the 1st level system. This one (FEA) is attached to 'you'. You want
to attach all the others the same way.

You will either need to ATTACH them - or use a DEDICATE FEA FEA in the
directory entry for your 2nd level guest so it happens when your guest is
logged in.

Re: VSWITCH

2011-02-25 Thread Daniel Allen
It depends on the microcode on your z/9 processor. Prior to a microcode
upgrade, we were able to run OS/390 2.10 under z/VM. After the microcode
upgrade, OS/390 2.10 would run very slowly under z/VM.

1. IPL the system with the loadparm set to the address of a 3270 (e.g.
OSA-ICC) or SYSG to use integrated 3270 console
2. Put FN=filename on the SAPL screen.

See Chapter 4 of the CP Planning book for examples.

DFSMS and zVM

2011-02-25 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

Hello

I was checking how z/vm 5.4 supports 3592-E05 (TS1120) installed into a
library 3577-L5U.
I have a 3592-C06 ficon attachment to connect z10 to tape drive. I can
load, write, read and
unload cartridge using 3577-L5U operator panel. I was unable to find out
how to tell to z/vm
to pick up cartridge into slot, move it to drive 1 (for example) or how
to automate process to
return cartridge from tape drive to slot after operation (read/write)
was finished. Cartridge
unload, but I need to use operator panel to move it from drive to slot
library.

Thanks for all comments.

Need advice on moving a Linux guest from one z/VM LPAR to another

I need advice or a pointer to documentation (if available? presentations,

VM doesn't tell the tape drive anything. A tape management application
like IBM Tape Manager for z/VM does. If you don't have one, then you
write your own by setting up DFSMS RMS and calling the provided CSL
routines to manage the drive or by using the DFSMSRM commands. See
Chapters 6 and 7 of the DFSMS Removable Media Services book.

Also, make sure you are up to date on service. DFSMS hasn't been
refreshed in a looong time, so all newer device support has been
delivered via PTF.

Re: Need advice on moving a Linux guest from one z/VM LPAR to another

2011-02-25 Thread David Boyes
Not sure I quite follow what you're asking. If it's a permanent move (ie shut
it down here, start it up there), then you use DDR to copy the disks holding
the guest to tape (or disk if you have CMSDDR), create a matching userid on the
other LPAR and use DDR to restore the tape copy to disk. You'll need to log
into the console of the virtual machine, make any temporary changes to
networking using ifconfig and route to get network access to the new copy, and
then use your favorite system management tool to make the network changes
permanent.

The copy step looks something like this (disk at 150, tape at 181):

DDR
SYSPRINT CONS
INPUT 150 3390
OUTPUT 181 3490
COPY ALL
blank line

Do this for each minidisk/volume attached to the Linux guest. SHUT IT DOWN
before copying it or you won't get a usable copy.

Now if you're trying to do it dynamically, that's a larger problem involving
CSE and a bunch of stuff. Too big for a note like this.

Can you explain further what you're trying to do?
