Re: Disaster Recovery TCPIP Address Issue
The DR vendor should provide you with some 3270 terminals where you can logon as TCPMAINT (Or whatever user id you use) and then make changes to the TCPIP Profile. Since the addresses at the offsite location will be different from our local addresses, we are at a loss as to how to change them. In our z/OS environment, we just use the vendor's floor system to make our changes. However, in the z/VM restoration we will not have a floor system to make similar updates. We believe we're not going to have access to their HMC where we could use the Integrated 3270 Console, but we're still trying to get final confirmation on that. My question is how do other folks get their DR vendor's IP information into and active on the restored VM system? Thanks for your help. George.
(Fwd) Curiosity Question: System Security
From a colleague on the vse-l mailing list. Billy --- Forwarded message follows --- I only just this week discovered that the VSE BSM does not support group within group security. Meaning, if you have two security groups of users -- say, IT managers and IT employees -- and you try to include the IT managers as IT employees just by adding the IT managers security group into the IT employees security group, then the VSE BSM (as currently implemented) will not return the correct access levels for the IT managers so defined. IBM Level 2 confirmed that this is a restriction of the VSE BSM and, they think, also of RACF (but they weren't 100% certain). Can anybody familiar with RACF confirm or deny such a restriction? Can anybody familiar with other top-notch security products confirm or deny whether those products, also, sport such a restriction? It seems, to me, that group within group security would be such a commonplace thing to want to do that I'm surprised to find that the VSE BSM does not support this. Now, I do understand that such a defined sub-group would logically obtain the same access level as is defined for the main group. I further understand that in order to obtain a different access level for such a sub-group that the sub-group would have to be defined directly, as a main group, to the security resource in question. I also understand that, under the scenario I've described so far, this would result in the same group being defined twice to the same security resource -- once as a sub-group and once as a main group. However, I don't see this as a problem because a main group definition should logically take precedence anyway. I just object to having to always define only main groups in order to obtain the desired security access levels. Is there a 'cookbook' available for setting up Vswitches? Any hints and tips appreciated. Billy -- Mark Pace Mainline Information Systems 1700 Summit Lake Drive Tallahassee, FL. 32317

Alan, Where do I find this z/VM Connectivity book? I suggest that TCPIP be given a virtual NIC on the VSWITCH rather than dedicating an OSA for these reasons: 1. VSWITCH has better OSA stall detection than TCPIP 2. No need for dynamic routing daemon and VIPA 3. No need for additional IP addresses 4. Reduces the temptation to share OSA ports (VSWITCH + TCPIP) Alan Altmark z/VM Development IBM Endicott
Linux on z/VM
I would like to install Linux on z/VM, but I'm not sure what distribution to use. Is there a free version of SuSE or RedHat Linux that I can download to do this? Do I need to license a distribution from the vendor (SuSE or RedHat)? Thanks, Billy
Re: Linux on z/VM
Paul, So you're saying that if I download SLES 11 Eval Version it comes with a 180 day trial for support, but the software license is free and I can continue to use it past the 180 day period? Sounds like a winner if so. Thanks, Billy On 15 Feb 2010 at 13:31, Paul Raulerson wrote: Note that trial means trial period for support. The license is free, you can run it as long as you wish, for any purpose. Seems odd on a mainframe, but true. And I personally recommend SLES over RedHat. If nothing else, YAST makes it far easier to manage. -Paul On Feb 15, 2010, at 12:30 PM, Rich Smrcina wrote: On 02/15/2010 12:22 PM, Billy Bingham wrote: I would like to install Linux on z/VM, but I'm not sure what distribution to use. Thanks, Billy You can get a trial of both Novell and RedHat Linux for System z that come with install support and maintenance for a certain amount of time. I think Novell is 120 days. -- Rich Smrcina Phone: 414-491-6001 http://www.linkedin.com/in/richsmrcina Catch the WAVV! http://www.wavv.org WAVV 2010 - Apr 9-13, 2010 Covington, KY
Re: MP2000 OSA Card
I don't have the OSA/SF service machines. It looks like I didn't restore all the volumes from the old VM system and I'm also not sure if we have all the old volumes. OSASF came installed on the VM/ESA 2.4 system we had back then. Had to go through the program directory set up for OSASF to format minidisks, copy files around, if I recall. But not having OSASF set up should only matter when it comes time to read or write the OAT to the card, which will require it to come online first! MP2000 OSA Card
Hello all, Trying to IPL VM/ESA 2.4 on an old MP2000. The box IPLs OK, but when tring to vary the OSA online I get the HCPCPN6283I... message. I do a QUERY on the device and VM shows it as an OSA, but it's offline. Any ideas? Thanks, Billy
Re: MP2000 OSA Card
I'm not able to load an OAT because I can't vary it online. Is there a hardware command to re-set the device to the original OAT? Should I just have only devices 0 1 defined in the IOCDS? This is what I have defined now: CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=1100,PATH=(34),UNIT=OSA IODEVICE ADDRESS=(1100,16),CUNUMBR=(1100),UNIT=OSA IODEVICE ADDRESS=(111F),UNITADD=FE,CUNUMBR=(1100),UNIT=OSAD Billy On 25 Jan 2010 at 17:31, Rich Smrcina wrote: On 01/25/2010 05:19 PM, Billy Bingham wrote: Hello all, Trying to IPL VM/ESA 2.4 on an old MP2000. Thanks, Billy Did you load an OAT into the OSA? This OSA card typically requires an OSA Address Table to be coded up and loaded into it before an operating system can use it.
