WAKEUP

2011-04-08 Thread Billy Bingham
Hello,

I'm trying to understand WAKEUP. I have the
following in WAKEUP TIMES A:

ALL 09:01:00 04/07/11 CP MSG OPERATOR
BACKUP THE DASD TONIGHT

I enter the command: wakeup 09:12 (file

This is displayed:
DMSCYW2246I 08:58:43 WAKEUP at 09:01:00 (137
sec).

At 09:01 as expected I get the following on the
user console:

DMSCYW2246I* 1 ALL 09:01:00 04/08/11 CP MSG
OPERATOR BACKUP THE DASD TONIGHT
Ready(3); T=0.01/0.01 09:01:00

IS the RC 3 from WAKEUP or from the CP MSG...
command. The message does not get displayed on
OPERATOR's console, but if I enter the CP MSG...
command itself the message gets to OPERATOR.

Thanks,

Billy

MONWRITE

2011-03-24 Thread Billy Bingham
All,

Trying to setup MONWRITE to collect monitor data
and I'm slightly confused as to what MONITOR
SAMPLE and MONITOR EVENT does. The cheat sheet I
found on ibm.com lists the following:

CP MONITOR SAMPLE ENABLE ALL
CP MONITOR EVENT ENABLE STORAGE
CP MONITOR EVENT ENABLE PROCESSOR
CP MONITOR EVENT ENABLE I/O ALL
CP MONITOR EVENT ENABLE APPLDATA ALL
CP MONITOR START

Can someone give me a good explantion of what the
above will do.

What I want to accomplish is collect CPU usage,
storage usage, and User data every 15 minutes.

Thanks,

Billy

 Greetings,

 I have a guestion regaurding z/VM I/O

a dozen devices (DASD) defined (Q DASD FREE),
which is what I expect. But at some time during
the life of the IPL the z/OS admin loads a new
IOCDS (I think that is what is going on) I

TCP/IP QOS Setting

Is there a setting in TCP/IP that would set/limit the
QOS. Individual says they are getting slow QOS on an FTP

TCP/IP setting that would limit this.

Unfortunately, the VM is old... VM/ESA 2.3

The FTP is from VM/ESA to an AIX server and the VM side
is about the only thing the individual has direct control
over. I just wanted to know that there is no setting on

 1)Define the VSWITCH
 a.define vswitch vswitchname rdev ccuu1 ccuu2 ccuu3
b.-and- add the same statement to `SYSTEM CONFIG´file
(Remember ccuu1 ccuu2 ccuu3 represent a set of 3 address to be used)
 2)Granting access to the VSWITCH
 a.set vswitch vswitchname grant userid
b.-and- add Modify VSwitch vswitchnameGRAnt userid to `SYSTEM CONFIG´
c.- or - add the set vswitch command in the AUTOLOG1 startup
 3)Defining the simulated NICs
a.for userid cmd define nic ccuu4 qdio
b.-and- add to the directory for userid:
NICDEF ccuu4 TYPE QDIO DEVICES 3
(a above can be skipped, but the userid would have to be logged off then
 on)
4)Attaching the simulated NIC with couple ccuu4 to system vswitchname
(This will need to be performed each time the virtual machine is logged
 on.)

 (Don´t think I missed anything)

We are in the planning stages for the first disaster recovery test of our

came up. Since the addresses at the offsite location will be different
from our local addresses, we are at a loss as to how to change them. In
our z/OS environment, we just use the vendor's floor system to make our
changes. However, in the z/VM restoration we will not have a floor system
to make similar updates. We believe we're not going to have access to
their HMC where we could use the Integrated 3270 Console, but we're still
trying to get final confirmation on that.

My question is how do other folks get their DR vendor's IP information
into and active on the restored VM system?

 Thanks for your help.

(Fwd) Curiosity Question: System Security

2010-08-06 Thread Billy Bingham
From a colleague on the vse-l mailing list.

Billy
--- Forwarded message follows ---
I only just this week discovered that the VSE BSM does not
support group within group security. Meaning, if you have two
security groups of users -- say, IT managers and IT employees -- and
you try to include the IT managers as IT employees just by adding
the IT managers security group into the IT employees security group,
then the VSE BSM (as currently implemented) will not return the
correct access levels for the IT managers so defined.

IBM Level 2 confirmed that this is a restriction of the VSE
BSM and, they think, also of RACF (but they weren't 100% certain).
Can anybody familiar with RACF confirm or deny such a restriction?
Can anybody familiar with other top-notch security products confirm
or deny whether those products, also, sport such a restriction? It
seems, to me, that group within group security would be such a
commonplace thing to want to do that I'm surprised to find that the
VSE BSM does not support this.

Now, I do understand that such a defined sub-group would
logically obtain the same access level as is defined for the main
group. I further understand that in order to obtain a different
access level for such a sub-group that the sub-group would have to
be defined directly, as a main group, to the security resource in
question. I also understand that, under the scenario I've described
so far, this would result in the same group being defined twice to
the same security resource -- once as a sub-group and once as a
main group. However, I don't see this as a problem because a main
group definition should logically take precedence anyway. I just
object to having to always define only main groups in order to
obtain the desired security access levels.

Sincerely,

Dave Clark

Multiple Channels to DASD

2010-05-20 Thread Billy Bingham
Hello all,

Risking the old saying that it's better to have people think you're stupid than
to open your
mouth and remove all doubt :)

If VM is doing I/O to one DASD volume only, say a DDR DUMP or RESTORE, and
everything else is equal, will VM use multiple channels to get to the one
volume, or will it do
all it's I/O on whatever channel it gets first and only that one channel?

Re: IPL Z/VM With old System Config

2010-02-22 Thread Billy Bingham
I was able to use the CPVOLUME LABEL NOVERIFY VOLID(nn) UNIT() to clip
the labels to the new format. After I did that I was able to re-IPL and
everything came on line.
I had a copy of the USER DIRECT with the new format VOLSERs and I have that as
my
USER DIRECT file no.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

I think I seen the following saying on the list (Or something similar):

Billy, if you haven't already done so, please look at the z/VM
 Connectivity book.

I suggest that TCPIP be given a virtual NIC on the VSWITCH rather than
dedicating an OSA for these reasons:
 1. VSWITCH has better OSA stall detection than TCPIP
 2. No need for dynamic routing daemon and VIPA
 3. No need for additional IP addresses
 4. Reduces the temptation to share OSA ports (VSWITCH + TCPIP)

Did you load an OAT into the OSA? This OSA card typically requires an
OSA Address Table to be coded up and loaded into it before an operating
