Adding dasd to existing SUSE Linux
I added 4 3390-3 volumes to a Linux guest, they were added to z/VM ok and they are still defined there - no problems there. Then I used chccwdev to make them availbale to Linux, and dasdfmt, fsdasd, and used YaST to config an lvm vg. Executed commands lsdasd, pvdisplay, lvdisplay and it showed changes were there, then during the maintenace window the vm and linux were shutdown and brought up, and the new dasd/lvm changes did not show anymore. Re: Adding dasd to existing SUSE Linux
I don't kniw your VM expertise level so, so you may know all this: Did you update the CP directory for this Linux guest: - if the new disks are include in USER_VOLUME (i.e. they get ATATCHED to SYSTEM), then MDISK statement must be added. - otherwise you need DEDICATE statements. 2008/7/30 Macioce, Larry [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I would check my directory again. I had a similar problem several years ago where I had added dasd to vm and linux and then when we reipled vm the dasd was gone. If I remember correctly( and I probably don't) I want to say I had an invalid dasd name(ie linxo2) and it should have been linx02 in the middle of my vg. Once I reworked vm it everything worked. Patrick, I did not issue comands mkinitdr and zipl. Redbook sg24-6694 page 186 section 6.1 says that with sles 9, you no longer need to run the mkinitrd and zipl commands in order to configure new ECKD). But my dasd disappeared anyway. I am still researching what else I need to do. Meanwhile I re-added the space, formated, and it shows in lsdasd. Sincerely, Luis F. You should, or use YaST to do this type of work. It manages all the various configuration files, mkinitrd, and zipl for you automagically. That can save you a lot of headaches in the long run. (I do prefer that people learn how to do things like this manually, before starting to rely on YaST, so don't take my suggestion to use YaST as a condemnation of doing things by hand. It's how I learned most of what I know.) Redbook sg24-6694 page 186 section 6.1 says that with sles 9, you no longer need to run the mkinitrd and zipl commands in order to configure new ECKD). That may be true, but (without doing any testing) I would say that if you do things the way they recommend, it's possible your DASD volumes won't be available until control has passed from the initrd to the system running from the real DASD. Depending on what file systems you mount them on, that could be an issue. But my dasd disappeared anyway. I am still researching what else I need to do. Meanwhile I re-added the space, formated, and it shows in lsdasd. You shouldn't have had to do that, just bring them back online with YaST. Mark Post
