OT: x3270 full screen

2006-09-19 Thread Rich Smrcina
Does anyone using x3270 on Linux know how to get the emulator to expand
to full screen mode using the maximize button on the Window (or less
desirable a key combination)? I have a customer that uses another
emulator and they can expand to full screen, they would like to convert
some of their users to x3270 under Linux. This 'feature' appears to be
missing.

Thanks.

I've never gotten that behaviour from the maximize button on X3270, but I regularly use
its -oversize option. Works great, if it will be enough for your customer.

Why don't they just drag the corner of the window to resize it?
Or from the menu: Options - Fonts - pick size

Ah! okay ...
Then it may be a font problem.
I mean: They're wanting the same
screen geometry, is that correct?
If so, then when you maximize,
X3270 would need different fonts to work with.

This is getting beyond me. Best
I know about X fonts is to select huge when I want
to similarly enlarge an XTERM.

Dragging the window corner does not change the size, it just repositions
the origin of the window.

Option - Fonts is an option, but they are used to using the maximize
and restore buttons.

I don't really know. :-)
I downloaded the package and ran the stuff mentioned in the
html/Build.html file. On SUSE 10/pro.

BUT, I have been able to resize with previous releases. I just tested
version 3.3.2 and it worked there also.

Re: OT: x3270 full screen

2006-09-19 Thread David Boyes
They don't desire a odd model configuration, just a way to blow up a
mod
2 screen, then put it back.

That's a function of the window manager, not the application (although
the application will need to respond to the appWinResize X event). Which
window manager are they running?

In general, you'll need to map an X keysim to the window manager
maximize event. The mouse and/or keyboard focus will indicate the
correct window, and it should be a toggle in the window manager (one
event does maximize, and the same event on a maximized window should
revert to it's previous state).

The real question will be whether x3270 is coded to respond to the
resize event. I don't think it is (and looking at the source seems to
bear that out), so you may not be able to do this. You could probably
start the x3270 session with a window geometry equal to the full screen,
and then minimize it to an icon -- would that be good enough? In that
case, see above advice wrt window manager maximize events.

Re: OT: x3270 full screen

2006-09-19 Thread Rich Smrcina
The intent is to start x3270 with four sessions on each corner (much
like a 3290). The operator would then want to maximize a screen on
occasion to see it easier.

When I try to maximize the window, I very briefly get a gray block on
the screen where the image might be, then it just drops back to it's
original size with the 3270 session intact.

Rich ...

Unless you have security or support policies prohibitting it, I STRONGLY urge
you to build it from source. This is a fairly straightforward app to build. (X
apps are the worst, but X3270 is the easiest X app I have ever built.)

   download the source
   unpack it
   ./configure

   make install

X3270 will of course need the
X development suite installed (headers and libraries). Thankfully, X3270
follows the standard recipe.
