[IceHorses] Blood test results

2008-04-03 Thread Susan Coombes
Corrie's blood test results are back. I won't bore you with all the
normals.
 The RBC 5.22 (6.4-10), HCT 28.2 (32.0-47.0) RDW 17.9 (21-25)(MCV upper
end of normal Hb low end of normal). So she isn't iron deficient. Is
she low in B12 or folate or is this old age?
Eosinophyl 2.4. Probably her recent exacerbation of COPD?. (wormed
regularly)
Everything else on the blood count was fine.
 Electrolytes were normal.
Glucose 1.8 (2.8-6.5) Bilirubin 9 (17-50) Are these normal for her age?
Triglycerides 0.71 (0.1-0.3) Who's been slipping her the Macdonalds.
Does she need a diet. Is this due to lack of exercise this past month?
Is it the beginning of IR? She is not fat as I can easily feel ribs.

I was rather hoping there would be a letter with the results.
I will put my questions to the vet. I thought someone might be
interestd in the results.

Re: [IceHorses] Re: Hay Shortage

2008-04-03 Thread Karen Thomas
This hay is from a hay field that is mostly grass with a tiny bit of
 alfalfa
in it. There is very little mould as it seems our hay guy knows when to
 cut
and bale it. We're very happy with it.

That wouldn't work here. I'm not saying that it won't work for YOU, Wanda,
where you live, but I wouldn't do it here. I just say that people should check
with their local Ag Agents. I think there are too many local/regional
differences for us to discuss meaningfully here, given our wide range of
geographies and climates. Hay has to be COMPLETELY covered here, or it will
mold, get muddy, become a haven for wild animals to nest in...you name it. Do
you have EPM up there? I think it's EPM - I get it and another disease
confused sometimes - that is transmitted by body fluids of wild animals,
particularly raccoons. We keep our horse feeds inside a closet in the barn,
stored in tightly covered barrels, and hay inside an old barn, and we still
watch for animals to try to set up homesteads. So far, our barn cats seem to
do a good job of protecting the barns from rats and other small critters...I
hope the influx of coyotes doesn't upset that balance.

As far as mold - it's not just the issue of the hay molding during the
baling/curing process here. If you put a big bale out and it gets rained on
in
the field, you have to be concerned about mold developing then too - not to
mention it just getting muddy and gross, and wasting a lot, plus worrying about
the horses eating contaminated hay. It could be that you don't have to worry
so
much about mold year-round, since it's SO cold where you are. I don't know.
We
can get mold here, even when it's just barely above freezing. (I don't think
we
can below freezing, but honestly, I've never thought about it. I just know we
can get mold in the winter.)

I know you said that you unroll the hay and feed sections, but I haven't heard
of many people taking the time to do that. About 99% of the round bales I see
are just plopped out in the pasture, uncovered - used because they take less
time to feed, and because, per pound, round bales are cheaper.

it the beginning of IR? She is not fat as I can easily feel ribs.

I don't have 28-year-old Thunder's recent blood tests (CBC) in front of me, but
they were basically fairly normal. His fecal was negative, and he's been
wormed
regularly. His teeth look pretty good for a guy his age - he's been floated
regularly all his life - and no signs of him dropping food, or quidding. His
heart and lungs are pretty good for an old guy. He looks like a bone rack
however, and we're feeding him tons of Senior complete feed, plus he has access
to good grass all day. He seems to feel pretty good - just not the spring
chicken he once was.

The most common disease in older horses is Cushing's disease. It occurs in
younger horses too, but it seems like most horses get it if they live long
enough. There seems to be some connection between Cushing's and IR. I lost
my
old QH in 2003 to Cushing's - he lived five years after his diagnosis. He was
19 when diagnosed, 24 when he died. We were aggressive in our treatment, but
his case was pretty severe in its manifestation. I suspect that's what we're
seeing with Thunder, but I'm not sure. There are some risks with the testing,
so
at his age, I'm not likely to put him through it.

The Horse magazine has done a lot of articles on Cushing's, laminitis, IR, etc,
and the connections between them over the past 10-15 years. They are online at
www.thehorse.com. Search for any of the above - you may have to sign up to get
to the archives, but it's free and a great source of info. Go do some reading
and see if any light bulbs come on.

[IceHorses] ABC Mineral Questions

2008-04-03 Thread susan cooper
I just received my ABC minerals. I purchased the Rush
Creek 1:1 which is specificlly for horses on an
alfalfa diet, and I purchased the Magnesium supplement
as a lack of Magnesium in the diet can cause
nervousness/spookiness/jumpiness in horses, and for
whatever reason, my horses seem to fit that
description. And these are horses that I have raised
from babies, so I know what kind of handling they have
had, and I'm not a horrible horse mommie! Now, as to
the alfalfa - I don't really want any lectures on it
as I would LOVE to find a source of grass, but this IS
alfalfa country, and at least I HAVE hay to feed.
Every year I look for a grass source, and every year I
end up with alfalfa because that is what is here!
Anyway, the point is, I know about it, so please don't
say anything about alfalfa! I just have to make do
with what I have.

As to the ABC minerals - I only bought the small 3.5lb
tubs to see if my horses would even eat it - and they
gobbled it down like it was candy! So now I am
looking at buying the 25lb bags of each, and with
shipping and handling, that comes to A$142.00 - so are
they going to continue to gobble it down like candy,
or are they going to slow down their consumption once
their bodies are mineral regulated and how long
should I wait to see if the magnesium makes a
difference before I decide if it is worth it or not?

[IceHorses] Walking Horse Report

2008-04-03 Thread Judy Ryder
It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!

  Trainers' Show Hosts 886 Entries

  by Jeffrey Howard

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - We're back! The National Walking
Horse Trainers' Show enjoyed its best show in recent memory and served as a
notice to everyone in attendance that this is going to be a great year for
the Tennessee Walking Horse. Summing up the intense competition was Show
Manager Benny Johnson, who has served in this capacity for 35 years. The
more they (trainers) show their horses against each other, the better the
show will be and the better the year will be.

With the previous years' industry conflict over, this year
the unity between industry groups was evident with the attitude surrounding
the show. For the first time since 1983 the USDA did not attend the show to
assist with the inspection process. Johnson addressed the condition of the
horses. The trainers had their horses in good shape, brought the numbers
and we had a great show. Show Co-Manager Buist Carr said, We need to
commend the trainers for how they presented their horses. This show is a
tribute to the hard work they have put in to presenting good horses.

As for the inspection by NHSC DQPs, it couldn't have gone
much better. All in all, 851 horses were inspected and only two pre-show
violations were handed out by the DQPs. David Finger, who is head of the DQP
program, summed up the inspection. It was just an unbelievable job by the
trainers. No time since I have been involved with the walking horse have I
seen them in better shape. No question we were prepared for any scrutiny by
any group. I asked my DQPs when there were minimal violations if they were
checking them thoroughly or letting some slide, to which they replied
absolutely not, they are just this good.

It should also be noted that for the first time in
Trainers' Show history veterinarians and DQPs were patrolling the grounds
during every performance to further enhance the inspection process. Finger
summed up this year's show by saying, It was an amazing turnaround from
last year's Trainers' Show. Great performances, great horses and great
compliance.

The competition was fierce during the entire show as some
of the best horses in the industry came out to perform. No class was more
evident of this than the Championship Stake class on Saturday night. In a
rare occurrence the judges agreed unanimously on the top three places in the
class. Rowdy Rev and Bill Bobo captured the roses for Harlinsdale Farm, He's
A Weekend Warrior and Joe Cotten were reserve for Jones and McLaughlin and
Gen On The Run and Justin Harris were third for Michael and Ty Hart.

Bobo and Rowdy Rev put on a performance that had everyone
talking. You can bet this team will be a contender that last Saturday night
of August. However, Benny Johnson summed it up best when describing the
outstanding competition. Any horse that was top three in any class will be
a contender come Celebration and that might be top five in some of the
classes we had.

Bobo talked about his stud after the show. It was like
another day at the office for him. He is good everyday and loves what he
does. He has gotten bigger and stronger. We want to dedicate this win to
Bill Harlin who was unable to be here because of recent surgery. He was
thrilled when we called and said this was going to get him out of the
house. Bobo's son, Chris, summed up the championship performance. I have
always believed in the talent and heart of Rowdy Rev and know and believe in
the talent and heart of my dad.

Bill Callaway came out of the gates fast at this year's
show winning both the Two-Year-Old Stallion class and Two-Year-Old Mare
Gelding class. Callaway directed Encore's Pandemonium to the stud class win
for Bill Hill and took Black Jack Fantasy to the mare class win for The
Stables at Alpha Place. It was unbelievable, said Callaway. I feel very
fortunate to show these two great horses, but to win on both, it was just
more than I could have imagined.

This year's show like past years had two three-year-old
classes. Winning the first of the two were Electric Gold and Mickey
McCormick for Michael and Becky Coleman. Taking top honors in the
Three-Year-Old Classic class were Lebron James and Joel Weaver for Brett and
Lisa Jones.

The Four-Year-Old Open class was one that again featured
intense competition between two of the industry's brightest stars. Jimmy
McConnell directed Cadillac's Bum to a crowd-pleasing first place
performance for owner Pam Betts. Finishing in a reserve tie were Ozone's Cut
Above All and John Allan Callaway for Mark and Sharon Thomas. We want to
come out early and make a good performance and set the tone for the year and
I think we did just that, said Mark Thomas of his horse's performance.

as for your question, my horses mineral appetites go up and down. and
varies from horse to horse. some will ignore and others will gobble
it like a pig when I leave it out free choice. What I do... I leave
out a salt block all the time, a brown one with minerals too. Then I
do the free choice minerals in the feed buckets about once a week if
no rain. (If it rains the rain melts it and its wasted). I figure
this way, maybe I'm wrong, they can have the 24/7 salt block take care
of some needs so at least they donbt gobble down all those expensive
minerals just cause they need salt... does that make sense? probably
totally faulty logic which if it is someone on here is sure to point
out haha.

But I have no grass at all, and my iceys and my donkey and one of my
walkers are such easy keepers I feed them almost nothing and worry
they arent getting nutrients. So I make sure they get their loose
minerals especially. I feed gro strong by alliance. I am blessed
that I live close enough to drive to jeffers warehouse and pick things
up, otherwise could not pay shipping! I see where minerals, like the
gro strong I use, etc, some of them have a kind expressley for animals
on alfalfa. My gro strong come in an alfalfa formula. as for
magnesium, i have the worst memory, but saw something the other day
that it does other than calm... but anyway, I gave it to my stonewall
for calming and he turned into a zombie haha. he would stand out in
the pasture all alone (he is not a loner AT all) like he was thinking
I know I should be FEELING something... haha but it sure didnt hurt
him and I plan to experiment with less, a half dose. My Jaspar has
turned into a brat lately, feeling his oats as they say, becuase he
has not been ridden hardly at all and has been eating the most
fattening things known to horsedom. he is fired up as they say. But
him fired up just means a happy stepping pace :) But I do see him
biting the others etc but he lost his herd leader spot when he lost
all his weight and now he feels better I think he is trying to get it
back. he is jumpy and nervous on sweetfeed products and on hoof
supplement product with biotin. I dont think protein is a big culprit
like people used to think! Because mine eat strategy which is 14%
protein and they are all calm as can be. Jaspar got froggy when I
started feeding him equine senior. Molasses just sends him over the
edge or something haha.

RE: [IceHorses] ABC Mineral Questions

I would think that there is a pelleted feed with the magnesium in it that you
could feed and just
cut back on the alfalfa. I have one horse that alfalfa makes crazy...I can't
feed it to him but we
have timothy here anyway so he rarely gets any alfalfa unless the timothy has
some mixed into it
and I can always tell when he's had too much because he changes. Anyway, there
is also a bagged
chopped hay you can buy that is grass. Its concentrated so you feed alot less.
If your horses are
antsy, check out the bagged pelleted feed called Cool Command if you can get it
out there, see if
it has enough magnesium for you. I also feed triple crown lite. Shipping is,
for me, not an option
as it makes everything too expensive. So I get what is available or produced
regionally/locally
etc

I just spray the pellets with some water to soften them just to be safe (from

I feed the pelleted feed once a day with hay (less hay), and hay only once a

the day? I don't

[IceHorses] Clinic Notes

2008-04-03 Thread Judy Ryder
Notes by Elizabeth on a classical dressage clinic by Col. Carde (taken in
shorthand, but not seen or approved by Col. Carde):

CC's comments during this clinic (just held near Downington, PA) follow:

He prefers to work with a stiff horse in hand to unlock the stiffness
before the rider gets on because in hand the trainer's hand can be
closer to the bit and used with more precision to get bending at the
poll without the horse tilting its head. Even under saddle he showed
that you can get somewhat more flexion at the poll (and regular, without
tilting) by moving your hand closer to the bit. This is only a
momentary thing, not ridden continuously. On the in hand flexions he
kept the horse's head Up (not lowered) with O rein.

Vibrate the inside rein if need to if the horse resists flexion (this is
the same as the SRS clinic with Rudi Rostek)

Snaffle is the bit for direction and balance; curb is the bit for
relaxation and collection. (I was surprised about the curb being used
for relaxation)

Start work on the side that is easier for the horse.

Try something at walk first. If you can't get it at W, don't move on to
try it at T or C. (obviously this applies only to things that can be
done at W, i.e. not lead changes etc) We need to train horses more at W.

If the horse pulls down, use pressure Up (and forward, never backward).
The horse should stretch down Only when the rider asks it, not before
when it would be a resistance.

Outside hand can be up more than inside hand at first to induce proper
bending on a circle. If the horse is stiff to one side especially do
this on a small circle to the hard side, using the outside hand/rein to
prevent the horse from tilting its head or falling out. On straight
lines your hands should be equal. Only use different height of hand if
needed to correct bending or tilting of head. Use the hand forward in
the direction of the opposite ear to correct tilting.

Go always in the direction of collection including higher head carriage
using higher hands if necessary to get the head up sometimes but still
always reaching out to the bit forward never backward and never overbent
or short in the neck. Lots of breaks with stretching the neck out in
between doing exercises with higher carriage. When the horse does
something good, let it stretch for reward.

There is no collection without straightness. When schooling piaffe
under saddle or in hand he always had the horse straight first. (He said
that slight SF can be used to promote straightness with horses that tend
to swing the hind in when asked to school piaffe)

of the day Many things you are schooling have to be with reference to
the day only. Such as the contact of the day today could (often will
be) different than the contact of tomorrow or yesterday because the
horse can feel or be a little different on each day.

Regular geometric figures (circles, serpentines, etc) help the horse
feel secure.

Always follow the movement of the horse with soft permanent contact. Be
precise with hands, like playing a piano not just stiff.

Riders were often reminded to keep their shoulders back, hands down.

He used a lot of the same exercises as in PK videos where you do figure
8 with true bending on one of the circles and counter bending on the
other. (He apparently trained PK at Saumur)

Often used low inside hand as a direct rein to I and inside leg to push
hind out on circle for horse that was stiff, keeping the O shoulder from
falling out with the O rein.

Carde got on several horses with amazing results (he is 76 and said he
is allowed to ride but not to fall. Not a bad mantra!). On one horse
that was curling badly he used low I rein and higher O rein but both
always giving in the direction forward to bring it back out IFV again.
He said you can also use both reins higher and still giving forward.
When you get the result you go back to normal (low) hands and have the
horse stretch.

In particular you must not allow the horse to curl at a down transition
when they anticipate this, keep the hands up and keep going forward out
to the vertical. You might have to use shorter reins to do this because
you keep your hands forward to keep the horse forward and out.

Best is for the rider to anticipate and Prevent the horse doing
something wrong. You do something first such as Before the horse curls
you bring hand up or loosen the rein.

Always keep regular cadence in the gait regardless of what you are doing
at that gait and the frame up unless you deliberately ask for stretch.

When change something (contact, gait, collection, whatever) always
change it Progressively, not suddenly or abruptly.

Bring the horse to the bit by lateral flexion not by just pushing the
horse into the hand.

Inside rein at the withers, O rein slightly higher for corners and bending.

I hand lower than O hand for SI but = pressure in both hands.

HP keep I flexion with I rein lower and close to neck with O rein
higher. Get the flexion I on small

minerals are greater, they will consume more. When their systems become
less deficient, they will balance out their consumption. Mine only consume
the Icelandic Mineral mixRedmond Salt at the change of coat (fall
spring) or during times of stress like extreme heat. I always have out free
choice the MOP mix just in case they get into something to protect the liver

My ancient Quarter Horse mare barely touches anything except the Himalayan
salt chunk I have out. I go through 1 25 lb. bag of each now for the 3

Hi Susan,

My experience is the same as Kaaren Jordan's, once the horses have enough of
the minerals they slow down. Also if you buy the Icelandic minerals (not
advertised but they make them) they don't eat them as rapidly as it is a
slightly different formula. I sent them hair from a variety of Icelandics
and they made the formula.

I would suggest a 25# bag should last you a while.

i thought about that too! My jaspar's tail would maybe grow that
long, I dont know... but notice the short broken off part near the
hocks? When my Jaspar's tail starts dragging the ground by about a
foot anytime he backs up he steps on it and rips it out. So I would
start wrapping it in vet wrap. Also when it starts reaching the
ground he starts cocking his tail to one side like a walking orse that
has had his tail surgically altered or purposely broken to make them
hold it up. I did not download all the photos of this horse but it
was at some big show. I bet it is in a tail wrap anytime they arent
on the way to and from an arena! and then the horse doesnt have much

The greatest enemy of the truth very often is not the lie- deliberate,
contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and
unrealistic.

All truth passes through three stages.
First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer

Re: [IceHorses] Singing in the Rain

2008-04-03 Thread Janice McDonald
I like it tho cause it shows so much in a happy way. it shows:

1. Blondie is SO desensitized and used to strange activity above and
around her. Motion and noise. I was at a horse show once, and well,
I'll just go ahead and confess, it was my dimwit husband, popped open
an auto open umbrella and was standing at the rail and caused a racking
horse to jump sideways and nearly lose the rider. I was so
embarrassed. People actually booed my husband... But it showed the
horse needed some groundwork!

2. It shows blondie is very bonded and in tune and trusting.

3. It shows blondie is in very fit, prime, healthy condition.

4. It shows Blondie is one of those horses that is handled and ridden
almost continuously. She has that I am beloved air about her.

5. and equally improtant... it shows Noel has a blast having fun with
her horse and thats what its all about, all the above!

[IceHorses] Soring Hotline / Reward offered

2008-04-03 Thread Judy Ryder
Just days after advertisements appeared in Middle Tennessee newspapers
offering cash for information about violators of the state's
anti-soring law, phones at the Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS) began to ring.

We received more than 20 tips from that first round of ads, said
Keith Dane, director of equine protection for the HSUS.

Soring is the deliberate infliction of pain on a horse's front legs,
via chemical or mechanical means, to make it painful to bear weight
and, thus, induce a higher-action gait in Tennessee Walking Horses and
other gaited breeds.

According to Dane, the ads appeared in Spanish-language and bilingual
publications in Nashville, Chattanooga, and Shelbyville, Tenn., to
solicit tipsters. Spanish-language publications were specifically used
in order to reach Hispanic barn employees.

One of the tricks sorers use to avoid identification is to use the
names of Hispanic employees as stated trainers on documents, Dane
explained.

Unveiled in mid-March, the campaign offers a $10,000 reward to
tipsters whose information leads to the arrest and conviction of
anyone engaged in soring.

The practice is specifically prohibited by Tennessee animal cruelty
laws, and the federal Horse Protection Act of 1970.

So far, Walking Horse breed associations are backing the strategy.
National Walking Horse Association Executive Director Don Vizi called
the campaign outstanding.

In a written statement, Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and
Exhibitors' Association President David Pruett encouraged every group
within our industry to take a stand against questionable practices and
abuse of any kind.

But support is not universal. Some newspapers and a Walking
Horse-focused magazine declined to publish the ads, Dane said. He did
not disclose the names of the publications.
Still, the effort has struck a chord. Along with tips, Dane said some
callers are offering financial support to keep the campaign active
beyond the 2008 horse show season.

Anyone with information about soring violations can call the HSUS
hotline at 866/411-8326. HSUS will protect callers' identities.

Beautiful photo and horrid story. I have never been particularly afraid of
rattlesnakes and ride from time to time with a BLM naturalist who believes
they should be protected. I think I just changed my mind.

What kind of saddle is Kim using?

Re: [IceHorses] Wanda! Your cat??

2008-04-03 Thread Judy Ryder

 That's no cat. It's a dog!
(This is a picture my friend took from our ally in Chicago. :) )

Oh, gosh, we had an experience with one of those, years ago. The dog was
barking in the back yard, about midnight, so my husband went out to see what
it had cornered.

He came in the sliding door and said THAT'S THE BIGGEST FREAKIN' RAT I'VE
EVER SEEN as this huge rat ran thru the open slider, into the house, and
into the bathroom, hiding behind the toilet.

At midnight, we had to call animal control to come and get this rat out of
the house.

As it ends up, it was a possum, but not something we wanted to keep as a pet
:-).

[IceHorses] Horses in Heaven

2008-04-03 Thread Raven
Got this off a horse list.

Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives.

When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day. One
day Barb said, 'Rose, we both loved riding horses all our lives.
Please do me one favor. When you get to Heaven, somehow you must let
me know if there's horseback riding there.'

Rose looked up at Barb from her deathbed and said, 'Barb, you've been
my best friend for many years. If it's at all possible, I'll do this
favor or you.'

Shortly after that, Rose passed on.

At midnight a few nights later, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep
by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her,
'Barb, Barb!'

'Who is it ?' asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. 'Who is it?' 'Barb - -
it's me, Rose.' 'You're not Rose. Rose just died.'

'I'm telling you, it's me, Rose,' insisted the voice. 'Rose! Where are you?'

'In Heaven,' replied Rose. 'I have some really good news and a little bad news.'

'Tell me the good news first,' said Barb

'The good news,' Rose said, 'is that there's horseback riding in
Heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before us are
here, too. Better than that, we're all young again. Even better still,
it's always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And best
of all, we can ride all we want, and we never get tired.'

'That's fantastic,' said Barb. 'It's beyond my wildest dreams! So
what's the bad news?'

'You're scheduled to lead the trail ride up here next Tuesday.'
