your horse is VERY flattering ;) Thanks. He's beautiful, a flashy color, but that's the least of his attraction to me. He's the whole package - brains, calmness, bravery, good conformation, good-natured and sweet, sure-footedness, and about the easiest gaits I've ever ridden on any gaited horse. His main fault is that he's small-framed - I'd never claim for him to be suitable for an over 200-pound rider to ride all day, but he might surprise me. I have been quite relieved to see that his babies have not been small. He's the perfect size for me - I swear he fits me better than any horse I've ever ridden. He's the perfect size for me - I swear he fits me better than any horse I've ever ridden. *laughs* my stjarni is 14hh and built like a bull and can carry nearly anyone, i think. i thought icelanders would look at the pair of us (i'm 5'1 and maybe 110#) and think i was incredibly overmounted, but i said as much to gudmar (a 6' or so fellow riding a maybe 12.3 horse at the time) and he just looked incredulous, and said very precisely, you're a good match because you like each other. i wish more americans thought that way! the only other icelandic i seriously considered in my search was 12.2, light-framed, and (when we were trying him) took a 2' crossrail bareback with my 200# friend on without turning a hair. she loved him just about as much as i did, although i'm not sure he could have carried her all day; he was certainly comfortable enough to be happy to try for half an hour. color? red chestnut. i thought he was beautiful. (though then again i'm not breeding, i really really don't care about color, and i'm glad stjarni's only chestnut/flaxen b/c if he were some more popular color he'd probably have sold before i got my paws on him :) --vicka

sometimes it isnt that they cant carry the weight, its that a bigger rider needs a bigger saddle seat and that would make the saddle too long for the horses back. I am beginning to wonder if my Nasi never gets bigger would he work out for me to ride but dont think I could ever sell or trade him! he is my baby. my friend yesterday had seen Tivar at my house in the field with my TWH FOx who is huge, like 1300 pounds almost 17hh huge, and she said she thought he looked like a pony. Then yesterday when I rode Tivar with her for the first time I opened the trailer door and she like to fell over saying when she saw him in the trailer she thought I had brought a belgian to ride. On the ride she kept saying how he was a perfect fit/size for me. Nasi is very light compared to him, but Nasi is just turned three... Cara commented that sitting on Dagur last summer was like sitting on a fence rail (he was just 4) then when we started to train him in January...she said he was like sitting on a different horse... I'm sure Nasi will step up to the plate. He's still very much a baby. Wanda

Yes, I think that's a fairly common problem with Icelandic's. I am beginning to wonder if my Nasi never gets bigger would he work out for me to ride but dont think I could ever sell or trade him! he is my baby. I really wish I had taken more conformation-type pictures of Bjola when we first got her at age five. I liked her a lot for many reasons, but I was afraid she was a little small and too refined. I finally decided to buy her anyway, and if she were too small, she could be a riding horse for me, or my daughter since neither of us is large. She's nine now, and is a broad mare with a nice wide chest. I don't think many people would see her as refined now. Even Skjoni outgrew a saddle last year at age 9... Nasi has some time yet. Ima, Bjola's daughter was born the same day as Nasi and Charm and she looks downright gangly - tall and refined. Our grandson married a girl who has been very successful training and selling ponies for the pony hunter market. She is 5' 5 tall and very slim. It was amazing how often someone would come up to her at a schooling show and suggest (with varying degrees of tact) that she had outgrown her pony. Nancy

Well said! I like that. It always makes me wonder when I see an ad for a horse for sale, 15.2 hh and it says that the horse is sadly outgrown. Perhaps ability wise, but...I think Americans are way too height-conscious. Sometimes, but there are a lot of people out there who simply don't care. As Judy pointed out the other day, many of the working stock type horses, many ridden by average to tall men, are actually fairly short - 14-15H - because the horses are actually most effective for their jobs when they are that size. Cary (6'2) was used to riding a tall TWH (15.3H and very big-bodied, so he feels even bigger) but had no trouble at all getting used to 13.3 1/2H Skjoni. My first soul-mate horse was 16.2H Sundance, and I'm 5'0 - quite frankly he was too big for me. I couldn't be as physically effective on him as I could be on a smaller horse, but I loved him, and we had a bond. (I had two horses I alternated riding during that time: 14H Holly, my TWH, and my 16.2H QH Sundance. I didn't pick my horses for size, but for how well we clicked. I liked them both.) Janice's husband, Donny, is similar in height to Cary, and he seems to adore his 14.1H-ish McCurdy horse. I think the height-obsession is more common among certain show circles more than within the pleasure riders I know. On the other extreme: all things equal, I'd buy a shorter, smaller pony for a small child's first mount. Short legs simply can get anchored around a smaller barreled animal. But, all things are seldom equal, and if I found the right horse with the right temperament to be a child's horse and that horse happened to be 16H, I'd prefer to have a well-suited 16H horse than a flighty or poorly trained 11.2H pony.
