I think it is one of those things that you aren't going to see any appreciable difference just to look at them but you're just adding a little somehting extra to the arsenal - in and of itself, it isn't a cure for SE, just one more tool. I don't have a problem with it affecting their weight but that's probably because I take care to keep an eye on it and cut back when I need to in other areas. I don't have as much problem with it adding weight as I do with corn oil or rice bran oil. -- Laree in NC Doppa & Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the "S" gang) "Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them." - William Farley "I ride ponies because heart is not measured in hands." - Steve Edwards

I'd love suggestions on specific weight loss programs people have used. Sadly, it's just like people: increased exercise and reduced caloric intake. We have had an unusually wet winter and spring here and the pasture grasses are just lush at the boarding faility where I keep Hunter and Tosca. Their solution for some of the idle horses has to be to pull them off grass and into the largest available pen and feed them grass hay only. Because they take a lot of geriatric horses and former show horses who have been injured in various ways, there are quite a few that don't get any exercise other than the moving around they do in pasture. For horses like Tosca, Tali(Arab gelding) and Prize (Appaloosa gelding) adequate exercise keeps weight in the safe range. Tosca and Prize both had to be taken off grass last year for a period, even with exercise. Nancy

I looked on the website for diet suggestions (to lose weight in horses) but couldn't find anything. I'd love suggestions on specific weight loss programs people have used.
Re: [IceHorses] SE Season / BOSS
what is BOSS? Black oil sunflower seeds, touted to be good for weight gain, improved hair coat and general health. We got ours at the local feed store. In fact I still have about 20 lbs in a covered metal can in the feedroom. I fed BOSS to Hunter for over a year and could see absolutely no change, but it was quite the "thing" in endurance circles a year or so ago. I also fed freshly ground flax seed to a non-Icelandic pony we had here that suffered terribly from "summer itch". I'm afraid there was no change there either, although it is widely recommended. I was very structured and faithful in my use of both products. Nancy

what is BOSS?

You sent Teev away because of SE? > OMG--that would break my heart! well "sent him away" is not really the way it is, its more like if you love something and its in a toxic environment, you need to let it go. Here we are 80-90-100 degrees from around april 1 with a couple of cold snaps around easter, and then it stays that hot til around october/november. I saw a thing on the news, it said the crepe myrtles are blooming two months earlier than normal even tho it has been a cooler spring than normal. its just weird weather lately! i think it is the la nina, and now today tropical storm development in mexico. janice -- even good horses have bad days sometimes.

You'll never have another Teev but do you plan to find another Icelandic or wait till Nasi grows big enough to ride? V

>>> He leaves this evening and my heart is broken. He turned out to be just >>> the best horse EVER. ever ever ever. I will always love my Teev. If ever there has been a well-matched pair, it's been Janice and Tivar. He was a different horse when I last saw him, October 2007, compared to when I first met a rather angry pony in March 2006. This is sad for all of us, Janice, but I'm so grateful for the effort you put into making him into the happy and delightful trail horse that he is, not expecting him to be anything other than the wonderful, practically-perfect pony that God made him to be. God bless folks like you who aren't afraid to see the overwhelming good in horse who has had a couple of "issues" in the past. My heart is with you tonight - I know this was the hardest of decisions for you, but bless you for thinking of his best interests first. You're a true horseman. Karen Thomas, NC

I started off by sending mine back to live near you Laree, wry, bittersweet smile. I threw in the towel when my vet said he felt he was suffering and he looks as bad now as he did at the end of july last year even tho this year I was so proactive it wasnt even funny! He leaves this evening and my heart is broken. He turned out to be just the best horse EVER. ever ever ever. I will always love my Teev. Janice-- even good horses have bad days sometimes.
