Everyone on there thinks you only need ivermectin, ever, always. I was truly amazed. Just flabbergasted. I argued til i was blue in the face. But i live in worm and fungus country i guess! But still. i was purely amazed anyone would think ivermectin is all you ever need for a horse. ever. period. still flabbergasted by that! But got tired of arguing it... Here, everybody says when you worm with a wormer the others not affected by it "explode" so you have to rotate to get them all, to keep them down to a manageable level. Wish some of you would go over to the gaited list and offer some good ol experienced knowlege, seems like so many newcomers there, just a constant flow. It's another reason to stay in communication with your vet. These two products are fairly new, maybe 3-5 years old, I think. If you get complacent and worm your horses the same way all the time, you're in danger of letting some sort of new resistance sneak up on your, and you may not realize when new products come out that fill a need. Before these two came out, I double-dosed with Strongid (generic usually) in the spring to get tape worms. I rarely use Panaceur or Safeguard, although I have done the 5-day-Panaceur dosing once or twice for specific reasons. Karen Thomas, NC

There is actually some evidence to think those horses in the South (or other hot areas) are less likely to need worming in the summer than in the winter. That seems counterintuitive to me, but apparently worms/worm eggs have more trouble surviving heat than cold. I still worm year round though - I need to buy a microscope. Karen Thomas, NC

Anybody across the pond feel like ordering me a boxfull of Quest (or even better, Quest Plus - the one that does tape worm as well) and posting them over? I'm late doing it this spring though. I normally deworm by the early part of May. (we had frost just a few days ago) Then again at the end of July and then again after the first good frost.. I like your idea of using one dewormer a year... Maybe I'll try that next year. Wanda

> So it doesn't really matter what you use? I'm just wondering if a > specific wormer is better at a certain time of year. There are two schools of thought that are actually pretty similiar. I think everyone agrees that wormers need to be rotated so that you aren't allowing your horses to build an immunity to any of them. Some people (like me) use a different wormer every year - so this year is my Quest year and I will give Quest every 3 months and give Ivermectin probably Jan 1 (to get the bots) Next year will be my Ivermectin year and I will give Ivermectin every 2 months then the next year will be my Strongid year. Other people like to rotate the wormers within the year. Ivermectin, then Strongid (or whatever the generic is) and Quest. Just be sure to give Ivermectin sometime after the first really good frost. -- Laree in NC Doppa & Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the "S" gang) "Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them." - William Farley "I ride ponies because heart is not measured in hands." - Steve Edwards

I've always just assumed that if you deworm with a certain dewormer, then the next dewormer should be something different. I've also dewormed with Eqvalan Gold...which has ivermectin and praziquantel in it. But it seems to me it has a different name in the US. I'll have to look that up, because I might decide to use that as the last dewormer of the year. Wanda -- Thoughts become things...

Ours are pretty good about being dewormed, though I like to hold their chins up for a moment or two just to make sure they don't spit a gob of it out. Then treats follow immediately... > So--now that they're wormed I'm set for another 2 months and then > which wormer would I use? Well I dewormed with something called "Safeguard" last night. It's fenbendazole. I don't normally use that for some reason. I've always alternated between moxidectin or ivermetcin Next, I'll either deworm with "Quest" (moxidectin) or with a generic type of Ivermectin. All of these I ordered through Jeffer's for about the half the price I normally spend on deworming per year. Actually it probably cost less than half. I can spend anywhere from 17.99 to 25.00 for a tube of dewormer here, and the most I spent was 8.95 (for the Quest). That's a substantial saving. Wanda
