[fsug-tvm] Re: CPI(M) manifesto calls for promotion of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

2009-03-19 Thread Anivar Aravind

2009/3/19 Santhosh സന്തോഷ് VS everlovingyo...@gmail.com:
the Congress is left as the only major
national party which is yet to formally take a position on FOSS.
This is the reason for the doubt as the election here is
 between congress and CPM
Clear that it is political. Otherwise which is the proof that congress is
 not using it any where?

I posted a Modified Version of Vinay's Mail.

We expect Congress will also Support Free Software and Open Standards
and all parties will reach at a common position on supporting Free
Software

A lot of positive steps are happened during UPA regime

1. Knowledge Commission report endorsing Free Software ( Now they have
to take t to Policy)
2. 11th 5 year plan says FOSS is the only way to move forward to
increase Computer penetration in india from 1% of population to 5 %
percent
3. National Draft Policy on Open standards ( They have to Mandate it now)

Negative : Draft Patent manual that tried to introduce software
patents that will have a serious negative impact on small and medium
software enterprenures in the country

So it is the time for them to decide on taking credits of these
positive moves happened on UPA regime by including the followups on
their Manifesto.

A short Note(personal) on CPIM BJPs Policies (lets talk negatives)
we can congress also in this list after their manifesto

BJP's IT Vision Document seems to be from a techno-nationalist
perspective. It envision citizen as a member of network society (
obliviously they will miss a lot of citizens who does not have the
access ) which is under state surveillance. Access Question is not
properly pointed in BJP's policy. it is more about access quality
infrastructure (ie middle class and upper class )

Also it omits Important issues of Privacy of citizen in digital
spaces. It is talks about National ID cards (Biomentric? ) Cyber
Warfare etc. It Also keeps silence about important issues like
patents. But their adoption is very positive . It opens a dialogue
space with BJP on Free Software Values. Now they seems to be only
concerned about Digital security of the state not about the citizen
. Also there are critiques about practicality of the policy based on
cost estimates

CPIM's manifesto is little more progressive for me compared to BJPs IT
vision. It focuses extending the idea of Free software to other
sectors like agriculture Drug Discovery. But is silent about Open
standards. The strong point against new Public Funded R D Bill
(which allows state patenting of Public Funded Research ) and against
US EU influences in Indian patent Office i also good.

So let hope All Political parties will have a healthy competition on
Supporting Free Software. we can reach at a conclusion based on all
Manifestos

[fsug-tvm] Re: CPI(M) manifesto calls for promotion of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

2009-03-19 Thread carbonmonoxide

Free Software has politics associated with it, in its definition
itself. What makes free software good is _not_ its technical merit.
Its not the ease of use. It is the political stance of Free Software
that draws a lot of people towards it. It is akin to Free Speech.
Denying that Free Software is devoid of any politics like pure
software is a misconception IMHO. When we talk about free software we
are talking about software that gives us something more than purely
technical superiority or usability. When we use free software we have
the four freedoms. Free software began as a response to the use of
technology to restrict free flow of knowledge . Any response to a
denial of freedom _is_ politics. We, as a FOSS supporters' forum
should discuss politics associated with FOSS

Any political party adopting FOSS in its manifesto should be
encouraged to do so and we should support them in implementing it once
they are in a position to do so. As FOSS supporters, I think our
thrust should be to see to it that all political parties have FOSS on
their agenda so that whoever gets elected will have a commitment to
implement it.

Who said open source means free of cost? I think, you have to grow up a bit.
In another thread, I found an interesting equation from you: *open standard
= open software*. While FOSS generally adhere to standards, that is not a
hard core rule. And there are proprietary software too, supporting open
standards. Do some home work man.

Frankly speaking, you dont have to do anything. You just connect the
cable to your lan card and start browsing using firefox. Try
connecting and let us know. Sometimes, you will have to change your
dns. But try connecting, first.

[fsug-tvm] Re: Bsnl Broadband

2009-03-19 Thread Kurian John
That depends on how your broadband modem is configured. I think BSNL
nowadays configures most modems to handle the PPPoE part so that the end
user just has to plug in the network cable.
If the modem is not configured for automatic connection, you can either
configure it to do that or use pppoeconf or any graphical network
configuration utility. In Fedora, new connections can be added from the
Network Configuration utility (System Administration Network menu).

I have seen few people doing this , So I couldnt help sending this note.

lot of companies do this, Sun, MS,Oracle to list a few.

Another example is JBOss is free, and open but for support u need to pay.

Free software Free as in Freedom ,not in Free (lunch ,dinner etc)

Freedom of use, thats free software .

[fsug-tvm] Re: Adobe Flashplayer plug-in

2009-03-19 Thread Ashik S

Hi,

try this .

remove the flash player alternative you have installed by running this command

sudo rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so

remove the .mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so file if you have copied it there
by running

rm ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

now copy the libflashplayer.so file to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ by running

sudo cp /path/to/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

You have to restart firefox after doing this. Firefox looks for the
flashplayer plugin at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ and ~/.mozilla/plugins/
If libflashplayer.so is present in any of these places, it will work.

[fsug-tvm] Re: adobe flex

2009-03-19 Thread Karthi S
As a web developer you've often found yourself wishing there was a way to
make web applications that weren't limited to the heavy restrictions of
HTML. You've used JavaScript to make your forms a little more intuitive with
dynamic/context driven comboboxes, but to do anything more often requires
heavy amounts of JavaScript and DHTML. Even if you are a pro at it, it's
extremely time consuming to make workflow interactive and user friendly.
More importantly, why would you want to be spending so much time on core UI
functionality when you're getting paid to work on business logic and
workflow.

*Adobe/Macromedia Flex* takes you to the next level of web application
development with the concept of *Rich Internet Applications* (aka RIAs). You
may have seen applications developed natively in Flash itself and realized
that it offers a much more robust experience for the user where productivity
is bolstered by ease of use, streamlined workflow, and real time
interactivity that is impossible to accomplish in HTML itself. However
developing rich applications in Flash for those who are core developers is
daunting and unintuitive. The Flash development tool is geared for
designers, and developing on a timeline is a strange concept. Flex removes
that barrier to entry by providing a programmatic way for developing these
RIAs.

So you are coming to say that all with the free software movement have to

OK.All the best CPI(M)!! he he

What makes you think I said that?

In my view what stallman trying to say that it is a passion and not
technical and is not associated with any political ideologies as it self is
a new idea. Yes still it bounds some extent to the left as it is against
monopolies but not in the sense what communism is all about. It is a concept
with the working class. So the matter of the political and the factor of
left doesn't apply even in ideologies they hold and it is worse comparing it
with the situations here as CPI(M) it self is a monopoly company here. Will
the kairali channel give its programs a copy left so that it could be copied
 by any body.

..and what makes you believe I should answer for everything Cpim does?

Re: [Fsf-friends] [fsug-tvm] Re: CPI(M) manifesto calls for promotion of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

2009-03-19 Thread V. Sasi Kumar

Let us not confuse matters. The fact is that, if the FS movement gets
support from political parties, it becomes easier to implement FS ideas
in the government -- migrating government systems to Free Software,
adopting open standards, getting publicly funded work to be made
available under some CC licence, bringing about Open Access in
scientific communications and so on. That is in the interest of the FS
movement. Free Software is about politics, but not about party politics.
FS does not support or oppose any political party as such. We would like
all political parties to support the FS movement, and we are thankful to
those who support. And this is not for our personal or professional
benefit. We believe that this is good for society. So all political
parties that believe that Free Software is good for society should
support the movement. It is good for them too. We believe it is good for
everyone. So we try to convince the parties that they should support FS.
Of course, each one of us will have, and should have, our own politics.
That is a totally different issue.
