You can either ask me to do something.
Or tell me how you want it done. Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

[fsug-tvm] Fedora Education SIG

2009-06-09 Thread അരുണ്‍ ഈപന്‍

This may be of interest.

Arun

http://blog.melchua.com/2009/06/08/upcoming-fedora-education-spin-with-a-twist/

The Fedora Education SIG is working on a new spin - an F11 POSSE spin
for mid-July - with some interesting goals. Instead of the usual “this
distribution is for children in classrooms!” tactic, we’ve chosen to go
the “this distribution is for people who want children in classrooms to
be their users” route.

The purpose of the current spin is to create a ready-to-go
development environment for contributing to educational packages within
the Fedora ecosystem… our target users are professors teaching classes
(not necessarily education classes) who want their students to
contribute to open-source education efforts as part of their coursework.

Please help us think of features that should be in there!

And also people who should use it once it’s done.

(And pass this on to the professors and students in your life as well -
we particularly need their feedback, especially if they’re not already
contributing to open-source projects.)

Nothing was wrong. I am using Debian Lenny. I think I had raised the

[fsug-tvm] Re: [OT] 70+ Amazing Firefox wallpapers

2009-06-09 Thread febin mohammed
Well, I was talking from a user point of view (As a user I never had to
tweak Mozilla).
Also I feel a little worried when I see some proponents of free software
making it another religion (while they take it emotional when they have to
use anything that is not 'free').

I am just afraid that it might end up like left parties in Kerala (read
CPIM) where everybody talks Leninism and Karl Marx and nobody knows what it
means (just like most of the religions nowadays ). A lot of (so called)
Open Source proponents are ending up as just Microsoft bashers and most of
them doesn't know what Linux kernel is (I haven't seen the kernel file
either and I am typing this from a Windows Vista and Google Chrome...
forgive me ).

Please take this in a positive sense (I love the idea of open source too!)
still it is debatable.

Thanks

I don't think so. Free Software remains Free (in the sense of Freedom)
whether one contributes to it or not. And contribution can be other than
contributing code or documentation. It can be helping in popularising
Free Software, reporting bugs or even just using it (which is, of
course, one way of popularising it).

In Ubuntu 8.10 Opera is very slow for me. Also why think
for another browser, when award-winning Firefox is there ?

There are differences... Opera uses less resources than firefox; both
memory and CPU usage. So, in low memory systems Opera performs
better(Its from my experience @ college lab
:-P )

Still I promote firefox and its clones like iceweasel and icecat as its
free and can further be enhanced using addons. In my system I have more
than 4 browsers including iceweasel, Opera, IEs4Linux, Konqueror,
Epiphany, etc as I need to check my web designs for browser
compatibility.

There are Free Software fans who use Opera. It must be good. But
for
some reason, it has not become as popular as Firefox. I think it
lagged
far behind, last time I saw the stats. I wonder why.

Any discussion on this tend to become a flame war on Opera vs Firefox.
Opera was / is a pioneer and a lot of celebrated features that we see in
today's browsers (tabs, for example) were introduced by Opera. But in
the beginning, they had these ugly Ad banners that made using Opera a
not-so-ejoyable affair. It was after version 6 or so that they made it a
freeware (free of cost, of course).
Firefox enjoys all the media attention for being "free software", while
Opera, still being far superior to IE (and even Firefox when it comes to
web standards) is little known. Except for the power of extensions
(addons) and flawless malayalam rendering, I believe Firefox is inferior
to Opera. (no flames please..).

I tried many clients for yahoo and G-talk in GNU/Linux, but none of
them supports voice completely. So, now settled with Ekiga softphone
and using Gtalk2VOIP gateway for voice chats. Though its not as simple,
and has limitations as calls can be made, but cannot answer calls, it
really works...

Details on using Gtalk2VOIP gateway can be found at

Yes I know, I too had that problem. I solved it by asking the other
person to call me using the chat window. When he calls me everything
seems fine, but when I call him he cant hear me even though I can hear
him quite clearly.

  Empathy
doesn't support voice chat correctly in old distros of Ubuntu. I met
with succes only from version 8.10(Intrepid) onwards. Still it does
have a few more rough edges that have to be smoothened out.

I tried Empathy, but it did not work. That is why I am looking for
