Hi all, Keeping in view the content that has been posted to the group in the past few days I think that there is a need for one more moderator. I am one and i have been quiet busy and couldn't follow the threads for the past few weeks. I know that the other moderators must also have valid enough reasons for their inactivity. [fsug-tvm] Moderation on the List and List Policy Guidelines
Dear All, There has been some recent discussions about the moderation on this list. Ours is effectively a non-moderated mailing list. Only new list members are moderated. This means that only spam content gets taken out of the list before it reaches the members. And there has been quite a lot of spam that we clean up almost on a daily basis. There could have been a few slip ups in this regard but I think that it has been done reasonably well given the number of spam mails that have been filtered out. The problems under question are off topic mails and flame wars. These two are bound to happen in a non-moderated mailing list and the only way in which we can completely stop these two is to moderate the list. Another character of list has been that we have quite a few first time users and users who do not have experience on other Free Software mailing lists. I believe that it is the collective responsibility of the senior members of the list to guide these people when they make mistakes. I have done this in the past off the list. Off-the-list because I think that is easier on the person who makes the mistake. If there are repeat offenders or people who intentionally disrupts that harmony in the group we can think about moderating those specific people. The easiest way to stop flame wars and off topic threads is to ignore the thread. Answering these threads would only add fuel to the flame. There is only one thread management option available in google groups - i.e. to stop a thread which would stop allowing replies to the thread. We have not been exercising that option so far but if that is a general consensus we can start doing that. There is no other option like renaming threads or tagging threads or anything like that which can help users filter threads based on moderator action. The general request to people is to mark topics with [OT] in the subject line so that members of the list can chose to ignore these mails if they want to. Setting too rigid policies on the list would be detrimental in bringing hesitant members to join and become active in the group. But at the same time, loose policies would lead to busy but capable members getting irritated and leaving the group. From the perspective of promoting free software I think the group should be inviting enough for new members but at the same time interesting enough for experienced guys to be part of. But experienced people can always take a rational decision to be part of the group for the sake of promoting Free Software even at the cost of a little inefficiency. The following has been the unofficial guidelines for posting topics to the group. http://kandalaya.org/guidelines.html I therefore request all of you members out there to involve youselves in a community based guidance (and moderation effort) to keep this group growing and meaningful at the same time. [fsug-tvm] Re: Desperate and sick Microsoft [WAKE UP MODERATORS]
Please, please post messages relevant to the thread. For your questions, you can create a new thread if one doesn't already exist, or you can atleast change the subject line of the tread. Its becoming miserable following threads, with messages suddenly deviating from the topic. Sure you can find answers to your question here, but how will anyone be even willing to answer such a question in a thread that everyone is trying to avoid? Aneesh and Mahesh its good that you are stepping up, but I thought I asked you to propose names rather than stepping up , if you know what I mean. Noone else has responded also. Shall we wait for sometime and see what happens ? I had a discussion with the other moderators also. They came up with a way to avoid additional roles . Let us see where that discussion leads to. Most of the user settings, bookmarks, email(evolution, thunderbird) etc are stored in "dot" folders. Most of these applications also allow safe upgrade from the old settings file. Consult the application documentation for more details on upgrade. -- Manilal K M : മണിലാല് കെ എം. http://libregeek.blogspot.com --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ "Freedom is the only law".
