Re: [fsug-tvm] Installing sandboxgamer

2014-01-21 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Hi smr,

try,

sudo apt-get install libc6

and then install sandboxgamemaker_2.7.1+dfsg-2+b1_i386.deb

I am not sure, even if doesn't work then you might have to install
libc6-dev (sudo apt-get install libc6-dev). Also check your architecture,
try to install a 64-bit program on a 64-bit installation.

I use Gnome 3 (3.6), you can go to Settings > Online Accounts and add your
google calender to it, it will sync it and and everyday you can just click
on the date and if there is some event associated with the date it will be
shown. It also shows up pop up messages if the activity has some time
associated with it. I think syncing the calender once will be enough, you
need not be connected to the internet always.

[fsug-tvm] Huawei E352u-21

2012-10-23 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Dear FSUG members,

I am stuck with a problem, I wanted to use a Huawei E352u-21 usb modem
on my friends Ubuntu GNU/Linux 12.04 with usb-modeswitch 1.2.4
(updated manually), wvdial is able to dial but it doesn't connect. The
wvdial output has been pasted below. The wvdial bsnl configuration
that I have used is also pasted below.

The device particulars are as follows,

Huawei E352u-21 (Probably it is an unlocked device [for orange])
Before usb mode switch it is 12d1:1446
Bus 002 Device 023: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
E1552/E1800 (HSPA modem)

After usb mode switch it is 12d1:1506
Bus 002 Device 022: ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398
LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard

I tried the same on my Arch Linux and there even the network manager
detects the modem, but wvdial hangs up the same way.

Is it a problem because it is an unlocked device.

Following are the configuration and output.

---wvdial

[Dialer bsnl]

2012-10-04 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Could you please post the IP settings that your system gets after
connected to the network, after you are able to ping the gateway.
Earlier I too had faced a similar issue and the problem was the
network manager some how erased the /etc/resolv.conf and thereby
deleting the dns servers list.

Try this settings in your /etc/resolv.conf file, edit it after you are
connected, once you reconnect it, you will have to change the
resolv.conf settings again.

I didn't quite understand your question.

If your question is, can I search for a particular phrase inside

And you have mentioned the code in your mail itself.

Let's say I want to look in all txt files in a folder if it contains
the word "hello", then you can do this,

grep hello *.txt

[fsug-tvm] [X-Post] Enter the Restricted Boot Webcomic Contest: Defend user freedom on tablets and smartphones

2012-03-01 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
-- Forwarded message --

In December, Microsoft apparently conceded to public pressure by
quietly updating the Windows 8 logo certification requirements with a
mandate that a desktop computer user must be able to control (and
disable) the Secure Boot feature on any Windows 8 computer that is not
based on ARM technology. This looks like a victory for free software
users, as it will allow a person to install GNU/Linux or other free
software operating system in place of Windows 8.

But, this is no time for celebration, because Microsoft has also added
a treacherous mandate for makers of ARM-based computers — such as a
tablets, netbooks, and smartphones — requiring them to build their
machines with Restricted Boot technology. Such computers are designed
to lock a user into only being able to run Windows 8, absolutely
preventing her from being able to install a free software operating
system on her computer. Since smartphones and tablets are some of the
most commonly used computers, it's vital that we get straightforward
and clear information about this threat out to the public.

Already know what this is about? Then take action now:

Raise awareness and have fun while putting pressure on Microsoft and
computer makers by entering the Restricted Boot Webcomic Contest.

Winning submissions will be featured on the front page of fsf.org for a month.
Entries must be submitted by March 17th by emailing campai...@fsf.org.

Sign the statement "Stand up for your freedom to install free software."

For organizations and corporations

If this is the first you're hearing about this whole Restricted Boot
vs. Secure Boot business, read the full story.

You can support this campaign and the rest of the FSF's work by

[fsug-tvm] Re: About freedom of speech.

2012-02-22 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
I think I was totally wrong about Diaspora, and possibility of rules
enforced at a later stage.

An Wikipedia says, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora_%28social_network%29

The social network is not owned by any one person or entity, keeping
it safe from corporate take-overs, advertising, and other threats. In
September 2011 the developers stated, "...our distributed design means
no big corporation will ever control Diaspora. Diaspora* will never
sell your social life to advertisers, and you won’t have to conform to
someone’s arbitrary rules or look over your shoulder before you
speak."

hmmm... need to read more about it.

[fsug-tvm] About freedom of speech.

2012-02-22 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Dear friends,

I wanted to post something on Facebook. It was regarding the shutdown
of a popular ebook sharing website library.nu. And I was greeted with
an error message saying I am not allowed to post anything about
library.nu.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/333028_10150695760555259_725015258_11676478_20293833_o.jpg

What do people in the Free Software community think about it. If
Facebook is restricting my freedom of speech, should I still be using
it? Can I start using diaspora instead of Facebook, but there also
these policies may come into effect at a later stage. Now if I
completely stop using Facebook, then I will be disconnected from the
virtual world, as right now I am not living in a "real world"
(detached from real world connections), as I am in a institute
pursuing my higher studies.

About library.nu, I am not saying that I should be given all the
content for free, but sometimes there are very few copies in our
institute library, and these books are really costly for an Indian
student(I am not sure about a foreign student) to afford, it costs
between 3500 to 12000 INR and more. And they don't have Indian edition
for most of the titles (except certain undergraduate text books).

I wanted to invite your attention to the following problems,

1. Usage of social networking sites and restrictions imposed by them,
from a Free Software/Free knowledge proponents point of view.
2. Stop using Facebook or other social networking site, but am I not
separating myself from the virtual community.
3. Can you suggest some alternatives for Facebook and other social
networking sites, may be diaspora, but won't these restrictions come
into diaspora at a later stage.

What more can be done for knowledge sharing? May be something like a campaign!

Re: [fsug-tvm]: Reliance netconnect Broadband+ connectivity issue in Ubuntu 10.04

2012-02-20 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
I suggest you to try it with the wvdial configuration given below. I
have used this configuration with reliance sometime back. Append the
configuration to your wvdial.conf file. You may also replace the below
contents except the first line [Dialer reliance] in your [Dialer
Defaults] to use "wvdial" instead of using "wvdial reliance".

[Dialer reliance]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Password = 7483182615
Initz = ATQ0 M1 L1 X3 V1 E1 S0= 0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Phone = #777
Model Type = USB Modem
stupid mode = 1
baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
ISDN = 0
Username = 7483182615
Abort on no dial tone = False

Type the following command to connect,
(a) If you have appended the configuration in /etc/wvdial.conf
 wvdial reliance
(b) If you have replaced the configuration in [Dialer Defaults] with
the new configuration
wvdial

Re: [fsug-tvm] I don't understand open-source.

2012-02-02 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
The second last paragraph of my previous message in this thread ask
you to assume that you have made a software for which you are not
giving out the source code. So how can someone actually add something
to your software (ruling out reverse engineering and all those stuff),
he will have to sit and write something similar to what you wrote and
then add the feature that he wants, that is a huge waste of human
effort and time. But if that person had access to your code, then he
could have just wrote the code to add the feature, and it makes things
a lot simpler, isn't it?

Happy Hacking!

Re: [fsug-tvm] I don't understand open-source.

2012-02-02 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
>From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the "wrongful appropriation,"
"close imitation," or "purloining and publication" of another author's
"language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of
them as one's own original work.

Now with an example,
Suppose if a person writes in his B.Tech, M.Tech or his PhD thesis
something and claims that it is his original work, but which has
already been published by another person, then it becomes Plagiarism.
On the other hand, if the person is building something on top of what
another person has done, it is not Plagiarism, but it is his
contribution.

I think that tells you what is plagiarism.

And now in Free Software, I am not saying that it is just my own code,
it has my contribution also. Linus Torvalds wrote the basic code for
Linux Kernel, Richard Stallman wrote basic code for emacs, and then
people started liking it and started contributing to it, and thus
Emacs, Linux Kernel and everything is a collective effort. And thus it
is an 'evolutionary' process (not sure if the usage is correct).

How does science progress, Albert Einstein came up several theories,
and people take that as the basis and work on another problem and try
to solve it, and so on.

Now on the other hand, I am telling you that I have made this awesome
software and I can share the binary, but not the source code, you are
restricting the usage of that software, as you are the sole owner of
the software and thus nobody can build something on top of your
software, thus your software will always have the limited set of
features you originally designed it to have, and will always have the
limited set of features until you decide revise it. Proprietary!

Now which one is beneficial to the society, with restrictions or
without restrictions, freedom or limitation, copyright or copyleft,
free knowledge or proprietary knowledge?

[fsug-tvm] [Solved] Cannot type smoothly in gnome-terminal after update, Debian Wheezy.

2011-11-25 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Dear friends,

Thought of sharing a problem which I faced after an update.

Symptom - problem with input in gnome-terminal, evince, nautilus, epiphany
etc.
Problem - missing ibus module
Solution - install ibus-gtk3

Detailed story:
I was experiencing a weird problem for the last two days. I run Debian
Wheezy (testing), with gnome 3.0. I found that I was not able to use
"gnome-terminal" smoothly after an update, the characters could not be
entered smoothly, if i type "asfds" randomly it will give show only one or
two characters, delay in accepting input. I noticed that I had the same
typing problem with epiphany (not with firefox), nautilus and evince, even
creating a new folder using nautilus was difficult. So I had to use "xterm"
for the two days, and kept searching for a solution. I found it listed here
[http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/06/msg02431.html], it led me to [
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=631116] where I got a
solution.

The problem was with "ibus", I use "ibus" to use "swanalekha" for input.
And as described there, I installed "ibus-gtk3" and it fixed my problem.

Cheers!

Re: [fsug-tvm] Arch Linux Users please stand up !

2011-04-19 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
I use Debian Wheezy. I always wanted to try Arch, and one day(last
week) I decided to. Just like Debian (testing), Arch also dropped me
on to the shell after installation, and then i installed everything I
require using "pacman". I installed GNOME3 and the required packages.
Later I learned about PKGBUILD and so installed "yaourt", and now
everything is a breeze with "yaourt". AUR (Arch User Repository) is
really amazing.

As Aashik has written in his blog, [http://aashiks.in/blog/?p=23]
"Imagine Debian and Slackware coming together. Slackware’s simplicity
in configuration and the vanilla approach and Debian’s powerful
package management. Add in some Gentoo like source package management
and an excellent community that provides these packages. There, you
have it. That is Arch linux."

Ofcourse configuring Arch is very simple, just edit /etc/rc.conf
starting with static IP (networking), modules, daemons etc etc. The
Arch wiki is really helpful, it guided me through each and every stage
of installation and configuration.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Conversion to pdf file to rtf

2011-04-01 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Hi,

Most probably OpenOffice is already installed in your machine. It
comes with Ubuntu 10.04, so all what you have to do is,

1. Download the .oxt file from the link I gave below

but since you are using Ubuntu let me make the choices even simpler,
download from any of the links given below. The "link A" given below
will fetch you the .oxt for a 32bit Ubuntu system, and the "link B"
will fetch you the .oxt for 64bit Ubuntu system.

A. http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/download/4620 [32bit]
B. http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/download/4621 [64bit]

Now after you get the .oxt, save it in your home folder,

2. Open OpenOffice.org Writer
3. Go to Tools > Extension
4. Click on add extension
5. Browse to the home folder and select the file you have just downloaded.
6. That completes the installation.

Now you have installed the software. Try and import the document.

If such a feature is there, then there should be a usb interface to

Re: [fsug-tvm] repository for ubuntu 10.04

2011-02-15 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
The reason it is asking for download from internet is probably you
have the online repositories still enabled and they have the
latest/updated software than in the DVD. So basically what you can do
at this moment is, simply comment out all deb lines in
/etc/apt/sources.list and then add the DVDs using apt-cdrom add, or
through the graphical interface in Synaptic Package Manager.

After doing this do an apt-get update, or reload using Synaptic
Package Manager. So finally you will have softwares only from the DVDs
listed in your package manager. Now install the required softwares and
it will ask only for DVDs and you don't need internet connection.

And regarding the DVD not working on your machine could be a faulty
cdrom drive, try cleaning it with the cleaning cd's available in the
market.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Any suggestion on Graph-plotting FOSS please..

2011-02-07 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Try matplotlib in Python for plotting.

from matplotlib.pylab import plot, show
x = [1,2,3,4,5]
y = [1,4,9,16,25]
plot(x,y)
show()

Here x and y are two lists. You can go through the matplotlib
documentation for more information.

To install matplotlib in Ubuntu/Debian type,
apt-get install python-matplotlib

Use either Python interpreter or IPython interpreter to try out the
code. Python can read data from files, from streams etc. So it gives
you the power to play with your data.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Connecting two Ubuntu machine via router

Not really. The default settings of the router will have DHCP enabled
and the client machines will be given IP addresses automatically.

If your ISP provides IP address through DHCP, then your router will
automatically obtain the address. All you will have to do is change
the default password of the router. Also configure your wireless
access point and give a password for it. You will get a small booklet
with your router which will act as a guide for initial setup, no need
to use the CD which comes with it.

And connect the incoming cable to the WAN port and connect both your

oriented approaches to problem solving. Its high level data
structures, extensive documentation and clear syntax make it an ideal
first language, while the large number of existing libraries make it
suitable to tackle almost any programming tasks. Its simplicity makes
it easy to adapt to multiple educational domains.

Python has several libraries that enable numeric and symbolic
computing. It also interfaces well with native codes in C,C++ and
FORTRAN and has excellent libraries for plotting/visualization. Python
also provides libraries for general purpose computing including
generating user interfaces and web development. These, coupled with
it's interactive interpreter, make Python an excellent language for
Scientific Computing.

All these features when combined with their wide-ranging applications
make Python a perfect fit for use in Education, Industry and
Scientific Computing.

[fsug-tvm] [OT][X-Post] (vote for a social cause) Krishnan is the only Indian in a list of 10 heroes that CNN has picked worldwide to honour!

2010-10-25 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
He brings hot meals to India's homeless

so please vote for him

New Delhi:  If you had not heard of Narayanan Krishnan, as I had not,
it is a collective failure. This is one of the most incredible stories
of personal commitment.

Narayanan Krishnan, all of 29 years old now, does what he was
professionally trained to do as a chef. Feed people. Only Krishnan
does not do this in the swanky confines of a 5-star hotel. Every day,
he wakes up at 4 am, cooks a simple hot meal and then, along with his
team, loads it in a van and travels about 200 km feeding the homeless
in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Krishnan feeds, often with his hands, almost 400 destitute people
every day. And for those who need it, he provides a free haircut too.

According to CNN, eight years ago, this award-winning chef with a
five-star hotel chain was all set to go to Switzerland for a
high-profile posting. On a visit to a Madurai temple, he came across a
homeless, old man eating his own human waste. That stark sight changed
Krishnan's life.

Much to the dismay of his parents, CNN says, Krishnan abandoned his
career plans and decided to spend his life and his professional
training in looking after those who could not care for themselves. He
has provided more than 1.2 million hot meals through his nonprofit
organisation Akshaya Trust, and now hopes to extend this to shelter
for the homeless too.

Krishnan is the only Indian in a list of 10 heroes that CNN has picked
worldwide to honour. One of them will be chosen CNN Hero of the Year,
selected by the public through an online poll. If many Indians get
together to vote for this inspiring man, he can win by a long mile.

If Krishnan wins he will get $100,000 in addition to the $25,000 that
he gets for being shortlisted for the Top 10. Akshaya Trust needs all
the monetary support it can get to build on Krishnan's dream. Let's
help him get there.

Vote for Krishnan here.    (http://heroes.cnn.com/vote.aspx)

The poll continues through November 18 at 6 a.m. ET.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Beamer class

I use emacs org-beamer-mode for creating beamer presentations, it is
cool and easy. Obviously at the end you may have to make some changes
to the Tex file, not in every case.

So essentially all I do is write plain text(not any big code) files
using org-beamer-mode and compile a tex file :).

Memory overload in both terms of software bundle and also the main

It's not just about the software bundle size, but by dynamic linking
you also have
a significant advantage that the library need to be loaded only once into the
memory, unlike each program loading the library(same) separately.

Re: [fsug-tvm] GNU/Linux neeeds Internet Connection

2010-09-03 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
In a GNU/Linux system the libraries can be called by any program,
and most softwares use dynamic linking so as to reduce the
memory overload. Thus each program becomes dependant on the
library it needs. And it should be already available on the system for
that software to work.

While in the case of windows it is not true, almost all the softwares
do static linking, which means the library is bundled with the software.
Say for binary for Pidgin on Windows, it also bundles the needed
libraries for gtk and all(thus increasing the total size of the software).
But on a GNU/Linux system multiple gtk applications will be using
the same library and there is no need to bundle the libraries with
each software that you distribute(thus avoiding the overhead
of memory).

Clear and simple advantage of Free Software!!!

I think you might have noticed that on a Windows machine when you
try to run an exe build using VB it sometimes complain for VB runtime.
It is because the binary was created in mind with the library being
already available in the system. But since that system doesn't have the
VB runtime it fails the dependency. So there you would have to install
the dependency yourself :)

Re: [fsug-tvm] GNU/Linux neeeds Internet Connection

2010-09-03 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
First of all no offence, and not forcing you to change your view,
similar way from my experiences I have my viewpoint.

See Narendra, when we say about helping a newbie in migrating we(not
all may be)/I implicitly take it as some popular
distro/some distro which the helper is comfortable with. And with
popular distro's I am 100% sure the softwares are
available in a bundle.

And since I have no clue what package management XYZlinux uses, give
me the list of of packages you need with version number
and you can come over and I will be able to give you the tar-balls.
But, in your case since I don't know you personally I wouldn't
prefer that, but for a known friend I am always willing to do it, in
fact my friends have come to my place with their boxes/laps
and I have helped them. And I also have helped few friends at their
house with bundle of softwares. But once it occurred that
one system needed some nvidia driver which I didn't have, so I had to
go there the next day with the required packages and driver.

Re: [fsug-tvm] GNU/Linux neeeds Internet Connection

2010-09-03 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
I know it is of no point in responding to this thread now, as i think
it is almost closed.

Anyway,

I still remember the days I started on Windows, I didn't have internet
connection then,
and I had to get softwares from friends on cd's. Later when I had
internet connection
I downloaded Winamp, VLC and all those softwares through internet, and also I
had to update my system with the most M$ critical patches over internet :P.

And for GNU/Linux also it is exactly the same, with an internet
connection we can just avoid
the hassle of going to a friends house and collecting the softwares.
As simple as that, so its
not that GNU/Linux works only if you have an active internet
connection, infact I have
personally helped many of my friends who didn't have an internet
connection at home.

But I must also point out that I have failed in helping some of my
friends to migrate/adapt to
GNU/Linux as they were so reluctant. Who cares? Sad for them as they
still lead a painful
life with reinstalling and rebooting every then and now. :P

When it comes to helping people adapt GNU/Linux or any Free Software
system a feeling of
uncertainty(FUD) haunts them(your friend), and it is natural. Help
your friend get over it. Give
him all the possible support. GOOD LUCK!!!

2010-09-03 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Hi,

I had enabled livna sometime back, and today when i went to look for
instructions on how to enable livna repo, the site was not loading.
Basically what you need to enable a repo is just install the rpm from
their site and it will work.

The site for livna is [http://rpm.livna.org/], but since it didn't
work i will also tell you how to enable it.

Download the file [http://homepages.iitb.ac.in/~anoopjt/livna.repo]
and copy it to /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo

Then do a yum update and all you need is yum install libdvdcss2.

In case that doesn't work, you can try [http://packages.atrpms.net/]
for the same, and it should without any problem :).

The library libdvdcss2 is listed there
[http://packages.atrpms.net/dist/f13/libdvdcss/]

Well you can play vcd using vlc, gxine etc. And you can rip it using
vcdimager. And in
Manuels case, it is not a vcd but a DVD, mostly a dual layer DVD.

When it comes to dual layer dvd, you need libdvdcss2 to play it. Just
install libdvdcss2

Re: [fsug-tvm] using an external hard drive on a Toshiba laptop

2010-09-02 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
As far as I understand, you are trying to open an exe binary file
meant for Windows,
which cannot be executed in a GNU/Linux or Ubuntu GNU/Linux machine natively.

But otherwise the drive has already been mounted and you can start using it
straightaway. The drive in your case has been mounted in
'/media/FreeAgent Drive/'.

And the file you are trying to access is inside the harddisk, which is
not really
needed in case of a GNU/Linux or Ubuntu GNU/Linux system. Just use the
hard disk
no need for installation and all. :)

Re: [fsug-tvm] Can we run TurboC++ in windows7

2010-07-07 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
@nitin m
I guess friend we asked narendra to hold his tongue for 'WT*' he used and
not because he said this is not to be posted here or something like that,
and I guess he didn't say anything about it, he just meant to say that BGI
is outdated. And to use some other package.

Such kind of language is not tolerated in public groups/mailing lists. (like
what narendra used)

Being a GNU/Linux user doesn't mean that you won't use other technologies or
other platforms, you may use it at school or at work. It's about Free
Software, we support Firefox on Windows, gcc on MAC, pidgin on Windows,
Python on windows and Mac. And many things. So it's not at all about being a
Windows supporter, but we enable people to use Free Software on Wind'blows'.
We show them the power.

But I guess none of the people gave an answer how to run it on Windows,
instead I guess my friend enabled him to work with code::blocks.

So getting familiar with Free Software tools on Windows will actually
help/enable a Windows user to later migrate to a free operating system like
GNU/Linux(free as in freedom).

And I say it once more >>>> It's all about Freedom<<<<< Freedom
Matter's>>>>>>>

Re: [fsug-tvm] Can we run TurboC++ in windows7

2010-07-07 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Allegro is nice, infact Ashik, Sooraj, Prasad and myself had conducted a
small seminar on that in Mar Baselios College of Engineering.

It is a good API, and it is similar to that of BGI.

And I guess it is pretty simple to start with Allegro, you can do a simple
web search.

I guess this question was posted to the FSUG, since he wanted to get an idea
of other packages(free software packages) which can be used for
similar(learning basic graphic in this case) applications. So I guess we
must address that problem.

And I guess you don't have to worry about Windows if you are a GNU/Linux
user, you can use an app/software called dosbox to run your dos based
application and Turbo C is a dos based application and you can run it
easily. And BGI too works, but I recommend you to try Allegro.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Forgot Root password

2010-06-17 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
add the following line to menu.lst

password --md5 MD5_SUM_OF_YOUR_PASSWORD

after creating the password md5sum of your password, using grub > md5crypt.

This is NOT by any means, a very good security measure. It's just a way to
stop a lazy attacker or your little brother. The rule still applies that if
you have physical access to the box, you can do what whatever you want. If
you want to be serious about protecting a system from physical attacks,
you'll need to look at encrypting the entire hard drive. Ref:
http://www.markmmanning.com/blog/labels/Linux.html

And the password can be reset very simple by a live cd.

1) Get a recovery CD (usually any installation CD will do it)
2) Boot the system off the CD
3) Hit Ctrl F2 or Ctl F3 -- get a shell (you are not in single user mode you
are in the Highest level: Creator mode -- in this mode you are not playing
at being GOD, you are GOD (root pretends to be GOD, it isn't)
4) Mount the slice that has the passwd file (hopefully the volume isn't
encrypted (all mine are...)

5) vi /mount/path/etc/shadow (on the line with root - usually something like
this:
root:<--- Edit this part Out --->:14685:0:9:7:::

Edit the section between the 1st two colons (the section indicated by <---
Edit this part Out ---> ...))

6) Reboot without CD

Swap comes into picture when you main memory is almost full.

So if you want to run some memory intensive task, then better for bigger
swap(still it won't make your system faster). Or else if it is normal

Attacks of any type can happen. My point was relying to distribution's
repository would be safer, and I didn't mean to say it is foolproof.

If a malware is placed on the distributions repository(say update), then all

Here it is not the case with vulnerability, the system is secure, but it
takes advantage of the dumbness of the user.

Better not to install software/updates from unverified repositories and
third parties. Rely on original stable releases from the correct
website/repository if a software/update is to be installed other than from
the distributions repository.

Yeah to all media quoting Manorama news. I support the open letter idea. It

They(media) are totally ignorant about technology. And we cannot educate
someone in a an open war.

We will lose our energy :D. But an intensive campaign to educate public will
be better.

What Manorama said in their news is utterly wrong.

+1 to Rajiv.

Free Software as such is not a technology, but the movement insist that the
technology behind a software needs to be free(free as in free speech). So
that it is useful for everyone.

We must tell them this simple fact.

Re: [fsug-tvm] BSNL EVDO Data Card

2010-06-14 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
I suppose that you are connected to the internet now.

--> secondary DNS address 202.138.117.60
--> pppd: 3

You will be stuck somewhere here. Ofcourse the DNS address being something
else. And that is the usual way of getting connected.

Take your browser and try to browse the sites. You will be required to
unmark 'Work Offline' in case of Firefox. (Alt+F+W)

And now if you are not able to browse the sites you have to check the DNS
servers in your resolv.conf. Run the following command.

cat /etc/resolv.conf

And it should atleast have one nameserver entry which is not commented by #
at the beginning of the line. If you dont have any, then you have to edit
/etc/resolv.conf in super user mode (root or sudo) and add the following
lines to it.

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 4.4.4.4
nameserver 208.67.222.222

Keep in mind not to close the wvdial terminal or kill the program while
doing any of these.

I hope it works!!

Re: [fsug-tvm] Drupal Installation

2010-06-09 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Hi,
http://drupal.org/handbook and http://drupal.org/getting-started/install can
answer your queries about installing drupal.

And for running that you will need to install Apache and PHP(if not already
installed). And then a database server should also be running, say like
MySQL or PostgresQL.

Regarding installation of Apache, PHP and MySQL you may refer to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP

Thought: A simple web search would have fetched you the answers.

[fsug-tvm] Invitation to Sage Days 25, India

2010-06-07 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
Sage Days 25 - An Invitation

What is 'Sage Days'?
Sage Days is a confluence of present and prospective SAGE Users and
Developers. It is an opportunity to come together to share ideas,
brainstorm and hack on Sage.

Sage Days 25 is the 25th version of Sage Days, and is being organized in
Mumbai, India. In order to cater to an Indian audience and scenario, this
version has been tweaked slightly. Sage Days 25 has beginner level
tutorials, in addition to the usual talks and sprints, to help new users get
started with Sage and help promote the use of Sage in India.

What is Sage?
Sage is a free, open-source mathematics software system licensed under the
GPL. It combines the power of numerous existing open-source packages into a
common Python-based interface. It's mission is to create a "viable free open
source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica and Matlab".

Sage has tools for a broad range of mathematical areas like Linear Algebra,
Calculus, Symbolic Math, Plotting, Rings & Groups, Graph Theory, Number
Theory and Cryptography. Essentially, "it can do anything from mapping a
12-dimensional object to calculating rainfall patterns under global warming"
- as Science Daily puts it . Eager to get started? Start here. [#1]

Apart from being feature rich, it's usability is one of it's greatest
strengths. Sage Notebook, a web-interface for all the math you'll ever want
to do, is really the killer feature! As the Sage Marketing page says, "The
SAGE GUI surely works on your computer box, because it just runs in
Firefox!". Try it Now! [#2]

Why should you attend?
Sage Days 25 is being attended by the creator and lead developer of Sage,
Prof. William Stein. It will also be attended by other developers of Sage.
This would be a great opportunity to meet and interact with them!

The conference will be attended by a plethora of enthusiastic people from
all over the country who use Sage or are interested in doing so. The
conference will also see the presence of many mathematicians interested in
software. Who knows, you may run into someone you'd want to collaborate
with, for your future work!

This event will be a great learning experience, if you are even remotely
interested in math and software for it!

When and Where?
Venue: IIT-Bombay, Mumbai, India
Dates: August 9-12, 2010

Tentative Schedule: http://fossee.in/sage_days/schedule/
Register Here: http://fossee.in/sage_days/registration/register/

Re: [fsug-tvm] Volunterres required for Installation #Christ Nargar School, Vellayambalam

2010-05-28 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
@Raru I understand a 5th std student can grasp and can be very good at
it(upon the child's interest). But keeping in mind a classroom environment
where a teacher's explanation is not sufficient for all and provided they
have lot of topics to be learned in other subjects. It will be actually an
overburden to an average school going student. And finally the student will
be asked a lot of *theoretical* questions for the written examination. The
child may find it really hard to memorise. And also even when we teach the
student all these technologies the student/child is not allowed to do a
single assignment of any subject using computers(this should be changed).

I think we are planning to *introduce computer as a tool*. And for a student
I think it will beneficial for him to learn Open Office Draw or may be Dia
or something like that. According to the child's need in other subjects. I
feel that GIMP is a complex tool to be introduced and doesn't(not 100% sure
though) suit the needs of other subjects.

*Request:* Can you also provide a list of topics which are covered for
Computers in other classes, especially the lower classes. So that we
understand how the course is designed.

GIMP for a 5th std student will be difficult. Learning layers and all those
stuff. Or what exactly are you looking for GIMP for a 5th std student. (by
difficult I don't mean difficult for all) -- JUST A THOUGHT.

The student needs to learn pixel, resolution and all those stuff before he
does anything with GIMP. Please discard if irrelevant.
