Hi Asha,

Sorry you missed it. I don't think it was intentional to announce only
in Malayalam. We were not expecting people who don't know Malayalam are
reading the group.

Hope we'll have more sessions in future which you can attend. If you are
willing to travel a bit, we are organizing a similar event in Anchal,
Kollam on June 30. Its about 2 hours from TVM on the way to Punalur.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the pivot and backbone of
our lives in this digital age.
Education is one of the most important aspect which is affected by ICT.
The said sector depends heavily on computers and other such devices like
Tablets and more so on the software (programs ) and the Operating System
which these machines run.
There are two types of software systems available as choices. Free (as
in freedom ) often referred to as Open source software, and proprietary
software. These two systems differ In the way they are provided to the
end-users, development practices and amount of freedom users have with
the technology.
While Free and Open source software gives every one the permission to
use, understanding and make copies with or without modifications, the
proprietary software only allows user to use a single copy on a single
machine without any permission to understand, modify or make copies for
personal or professional reasons even though license has been payed for.
There are several issues governing what kind of Software and OS should
be used in education. This document focuses on these issues and will
make recommendations on software and OS to be used in educational
institutes syllabus and administration.

Those are the features supported by your processor. It just means vmx or hardware virtualization is a supported feature. We now have a target release date of Saturday the 25th of April. We
have checked with core teams, and this seems to be acceptable for
everyone.  This means we are able to begin the final preparations for
a release of Debian 8 - Jessie.

The intention is only to lift the date if something really critical
pops up that is not possible to handle as an errata, or if we end up
technically unable to release that weekend.

Please keep in mind that we intend to have a quiet period from
Saturday the 18th of April.  Bug fixes must be *in Jessie* before
then.

RC bugs not fixed in time

Should you have any RC bug fixes that misses the deadline please
contact the Stable Release Team via a pu bug against the
release.debian.org pseudopackage, including a debdiff of the current
and proposed source packages.

Please note that removals can still occur.  In particular, the
automatic removal from testing remains active!  We currently have
*at least* 12 RC bugs eligible for automatic removal before the
release!

Got an RC bug you cannot live with?

That is a 32 bit binary? Can you post output of 'uname -a' command?

 I am not able to locate the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

PS: Telegram service is not federated and telegram server is non-free.

The Debian Community combats Global Warming with a Freeze

With the freeze occurring as planned on November 5, Lucas Nussbaum
blogged [2]: This is quite an achievement from the project as a whole,
and the Release Team specifically. First, we froze on the date announced
more than a year ago, and the freeze seems to have been well respected
by all maintainers. Second, with 310 RC bugs at the time of the freeze,
we are probably breaking a record for all recent Debian releases. Could
we have the shorter Debian freeze ever? Given that FOSDEM [3] is 12
weeks away, could we even release before FOSDEM, and have a big party
there to celebrate?

Richard Hartmann posted the Release Critical Bug report for Week 45 [4]
which highlights the work that needs to be done to push Jessie into
release. There are 1,154 bugs of which 295 directly affect Jessie, which
we need to get down to zero. Of these, 229 are bugs which affect both
Jessie and unstable and 66 affect Jessie only. He also posts a table of
data which compares our current status to the Squeeze release cycle. Not
to be lost in the pretty data and graph [5] is the request that if you
are able, please look into the key [6] packages [7] which need the most
help.

Tokyo area Debian study group

The Tokyo area Debian study group [8] held its 119th meeting starting
with a Debian common sense quiz, moving on to a discussion of the
LibreOffice package in Debian and desires to see more upstream and
downstream support. They also had a hands-on event [9] for debian-
installer beta2 for Debian 8 Jessie.

First Jessie based Debian Edu released

Petter Reinholdtsen announced [10] the first Jessie based Debian Edu
release. Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux [11], is a complete
operating system for schools, with support for servers, workstations,
and laptops working together on a school network. The creation of a
multi-user multi-machine study environment can be completed in a few
hours with hundreds of applications pre-installed. Further details of
the release include information about its current distribution,
documentation [12], and status [13].

Your tools shouldn’t spy on you.

Our fundamental freedoms and democracy are under threat from the
monopoly of a business model called corporate surveillance.

Corporate surveillance treats human beings as natural resources to be
surveilled, studied, and exploited for profit.

It is the business model of offering you free and subsidised products in
exchange for the right to mine your data and to profile you. In this
relationship, you are the quarry being mined. Your data is the raw
materials that corporations study to analyse, predict, and manipulate
your behaviour and motivations.

Corporate surveillors strive to understand you better by creating a
profile of you. This is a virtual you; a digital self. It is a
simulation of you (your sim).

Corporate surveillors cannot keep your corporeal self locked up in a lab
to study you and experiment on you to understand you better but there
are currently no regulations against them doing that to your sim. In our
current system of laws, although your corporeal self has rights, your
virtual self — your sim — does not. (We must work to change this so that
your sim is eventually afforded the legal rights of a person.)

The goal of these corporations is to eventually exploit what they learn
about you for financial gain by influencing your behaviour to their
actual customers.

Corporate surveillance is the dominant business model on the Internet
today. It is the business model of huge publicly-traded transnational
corporations like Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and Twitter as well as many
other venture-capital-subsidised smaller companies and startups that are
currently looking for exits either to larger corporate surveillors or to
the public in the form of an IPO.

Corporate surveillors tell us that if we do not want to be spied on, we
do not have to use their tools, services, and platforms. They say that
their products are optional, not essential.

This is not true.

The tools and services provided by corporate surveillors are essential
to participating in modern life today and are becoming even more so with
every day that passes.

The lack of viable alternatives to corporate surveillance leaves people
with an unacceptable decision to make: either accept being spied on,
studied, and manipulated for profit, or disconnect from modern life.

Corporate surveillors tell us that if we oppose their business model, we
are Luddites who oppose technology, innovation, and the creation of jobs.

This is poppycock.

We oppose neither technology, nor innovation, nor the creation of jobs.
We simply oppose their toxic business model of corporate surveillance
that treats human beings as walking bags of mostly data and is
detrimental to our fundamental freedoms and democracy.

As concerned individuals and organisations, we are working to change
this status quo by shifting the ownership and control of consumer
technology and data from corporations to individuals.

To achieve this goal, we will create new organisations that are
independent, sustainable, design-led, and diverse.
Independent

We will not play in your gilded sandboxes.

We reject the myopic and destructive cycle of venture capital and exits
that leads to the proliferation of ‘free’ services. We spend our time
creating businesses that we love to work in, not dreaming up exit
strategies. We are not sponsored by corporate surveillors. Our companies
are sustainable businesses guided by the social mission in this
manifesto. We fund our organisations in ways that help us to protect
that social mission (e.g., bootstrapping, non-equity-based crowdfunding,
revenue-based investment).
Sustainable

We are to corporate surveillance what organic farming is to factory farming.

We do not reject making a profit; we simply want to make an ethical,
sustainable profit. We want to create successful, sustainable businesses
that grow organically. We reject the excessive greed of the
venture-capital-backed business model of corporate surveillance. We
adopt alternate business models that are transparent, forthright, and
easy to understand.

We sell products and we sell services that help people to maintain their
tools and data. We sell seamlessness, we sell ease-of-use, we sell time
saved.

We do not sell people. We will never build businesses that monetise
people’s data or violate their privacy.

We start small and grow organically.
Design-led

We must design the organisation before we can design the product.

Design is not a layer, it is a cross-cutting concern. Design does not

packaging with me at smc font workshop day 2 and integrated all
feedbacks within 3 days! It is probably one of the fastest packaging
efforts - from first try at packaging to getting it accepted in debian.

[fsug-tvm] [x-post] Debian Jessie Bug Squashing Party

Hi,

You might have heard the news about jessie release freeze. It means we
are getting close to our next stable release. We will release it when we
fix all the release critical bugs. I think many of you can help make
that release perfect and fast by fixing release critical bugs. I'm in
Thiruvananthapuram for some days and I can guide those who are
interested. What would be a good time for us to meet and work on this?
Also suggest possible venues. We just need internet connection and power
sockets.

the desktop based app, you can either wait some more days before it is
stable or you can use web based app, which is stable and used by many
organizations like ICFOSS for last 3 years.

If you prefer the desktop app, you can help by testing the development

I'm pretty happy with Firefox OS on ZTE Open C, and I would recommend it
to anyone. Yes, there are still some features missing, but it will be
built eventually. Though I'm still not fully happy with mozilla
community, it is the best option we have now, and being a community
driven platform, when all of us get involved more closely, the
experience is only going to improve.

 Can I install Debian on MotoG/MotoE/MotoX?

Current mailing list of ilug cochin is locked by its moderator (all
members are moderated). So the community is ditching the  old mailing
list and moving to librelist.com, a list service running on free
software and has no censorship (there is no owner and moderator for
this list and there is only a spam filter and bounce catching system).
If you want to subscribe all you need to do is send a mail to
ilugcochin at librelist.com and you will be asked to confirm your
email address by replying.

Spread the news around and tell any members of old mailing list you know.

Where were you when your fellow members were silenced? Did you ask any
questions when the new mailing list guidelines were posted? You are

What choice is left to you when you are moderated? When every single
person is moderated?

 This is an active FSUG in kerala. I don't want the efforts to split.

So what did you do till now to keep the effort together? Did you open
your mouth when Joseph John, Danial Jose, Sooraj Kenoth and everyone
else was moderated? Did you ask the reason for moderation? I was ready
to fight as long as I was allowed to talk.

I'm curious to know what would be your next move.

yes, this was already explored. People talked to all of them on phone
(not sure of Prince and Vimal, but I know Sameer, Balakrishnan sir,
and Jay Jacob know the situation really well). They all chose to
remain silent.

There was no response to this mail or any subsequent mails from me and
also other members. Phone conversations have been happening all of
last week.

Let me try my luck again. I will try to send multiple mails so its
better than typing things all over again. Sad part is the response of
firefox os devs, an email app that does not work at all is considered
a 'normal' bug for a smart phone os.

I started with asking them how many of them know how to drive a car,
ride a bike or a bicycle. Some people raised their hands. Then I asked
them how many of them learned it by reading the manuals. Some answered
they need practice.

Then I asked them what is needed to repair, they said they need the
manuals. Then they replied they need to know the design if they want
to make a better one.

I had set the stage for them to realize what they need to make better
software. It is evident that only free software can provide it.

Then some people had tried tinkering with devices and one person even
tried to modify the kernel. Kevin had put printks (printf for kernel)
to learn the execution flow
of the kernel but given up after getting stuck.

Only few people were really interested to work on existing software.
Still I explained google summer of code to them.

I showed them ideas list of smc and explained about how spell checking
is difficult for malayalam. I had to explain encodings, fonts and
rendering when I mentioned complex rendering support for context. They
were clear about ascii and some answered we need a bigger table to
include malayalam. I introduced open type fonts and its tables
(positioning and substitution) for conjuncts. As there was not much
interests to contribute even after asking a few times (it is hard to
sink the idea if building something not for making money) I switched
to encryption and privacy.

They were familiar with symmetric key encryption and I explain about
public key cryptography and web of trust.

Compared to my experience with GEC Thrissur and CET tvm, there was not
much awareness about privacy. No one had heard about Edward Snowden
and I was surpriced no one knew about Julian Assange or even
wikileaks.

I tried to bring their attention to being watched all the time and
people knowing everything they do on the internet. They were all
living in a happy world of milk, honey and roses. I don't know how to
explain privacy to them.

So I just talked about diaspora as a better way of providing social networking.

I told them about save poddery campaign and showed our video. Anish is
a superstar there as all girls recognized him on screen.

[fsug-tvm] CBSE moving to GNU/linux from next year

I was training some teachers GNU/linux installation and basics today
at Thiruvananthapuram. They showed me text books with open office,
gimp, gcompris, tuxpaint etc and told me they will stary teaching it
from next year. I think its a welcome move to look forward to.

[fsug-tvm] debian packaging session/monthly meet in Thiruvananthapuram

Hi,

Ganesh reminded me yesteday that I have not taken a packaging session
in Thiruvananthapuram. I'm happy to take the session in the evenings.
Ganesh suggested we can meet at hackerspace at space. If anyone wants
to join today or tomorrow or both days, please reply.

We can also kickstart ilug tvm monthly meetups with this. Cochin has
monthly meetings for manu years and Calicut also started monthly
meetings from this month. It will be good to have regular face to face
meetings so the communitu feeling is strengthened and also it sparks
new ideas, campaigns and projects.

 about privacy. I knew telling them privacy is important is not going
 to work. Niyam suggested we ask them to give all their passwords so
 they realize. But neither of us actually expected people to actually
 share their passwords!

 I will be in TVM on 20th and would like to have similar interactions
 in any campus possible. If you can help arrange this let me know. Just

 If there is already some Free Software awareness, I'd like to focus on

 Hope all of you are aware of FOSSMeet, the premier Free Software event in
 Kerala organized by NIT Calicut annually.

 FOSSMeet is not just an event for Free Software developers to come around
 and sit in technical presentations, seminars and workshops but it is also
 is an opportunity for Free Software activists across Kerala to come
 together for 3 days, connect with each other, have fun and at the same time
 brainstorm for other Free Software activities for the rest of the year. It
 was during a FOSSMeet that we charted out the plan for the FreedomWalk
 campaign (http://www.freedomwalk.in). So I know that it works. NIT Calicut
 has a beautiful campus and it would be a worthwhile experience spending the
 3 days at the campus thinking of nothing but FOSS.

Yes, it is a great place to plan upcoming events. It is during one of
the foss meets me and Sooraj planned to conduct SMC camps across
Kerala.

We also had a chamba camp there. We also planned savepoddery.com
campaign last year.


 This year's FOSSMeet is going to be held from 14th to 16th of February at
 NIT Calicut. I will be presenting a session on Drupal on the 15th. You can
 see the schedule at - http://fossmeet.in/2014/. More importantly I am
 looking forward to meeting and connecting with new Free Software activists
 from across Kerala. You can register online or walk in and register at the
 event. The sessions have limited seats so you might want to register online
 to book the seats. You could also walk in and register at the event if you
 are not able to register online.

 I know that this is probably a bit late to send this invitation for booking
 railway tickets but I think you would still be able to get tatkal tickets
 for the event. Of course you could get general tickets and sit / stand and
 travel and come for the event, it would still be worth it :-)

 Look forward to seeing at least some of you at the event.

to run few more communication infra ourselves (we have a diaspora
instance at poddery.com run by our community, I would like email and
email lists added to that - not just Free Software, but beating google
