I run Debian etch on a pIII 800MHz, 128MB Ram, Trident on board
graphics card, and some 30GB hdd. I have 1024x768. Not really

This thread has effectively been hijacked. The poor guy asked for a tool
that create web pages, not names of frameworks that are used to write web
application. I am also a firm believer that "hand written" stuff is good for
many situations. The browser based front-end of our virtualization
management system is written in Python/TG. There is no DW involved anywhere.

There are businesses out there that I know are making a lot of money just by
making static web sites for customers. Due to the heavy competition, they
need to be quick and cheap. There are certain tools that help create good
looking, static web sites quickly and easily. And DW is one such tools. If
Ravi had asked for an alternate to ASP, most of the conversation in this
mail chain would have been valid. However, as a matter of fact, he *is*
asking for an alternative to DW. Taking into account what DW does, if anyone
can suggest an alternate tool that helps create static web pages visually,
it would have helped our man.

This thread has however been a lot of fun with Ken pitching in some jokes.
Now my turn for suggestions. Ravi, dude, use Emacs. OK, now that the thread
has turned irrelevant, I invite the vi guys for a flame war.

Cheers!

if you had checked the thread, you would have found suggestions for
quanta, nvu, etc etc which are all poor cousins of dreamweaver in the
WYSIWYG department. The point is, that the nix philosophy being what
it is, there are very often no tools that give an exact alternative
to the proprietary tool. There are a large many projects that attempt
to clone the proprietary tool, but as far as I can see, in all those
attempts the clone is far below the original in quality. Some examples:

OO word and doze word
vb dot net and mono
vb and gambas

success stories are where cloning is not attempted and the nix tool
develops in it's own way. Examples:

Gimp and Photoshop
Blender and Maya

So, if you want something like dreamweaver, spend the 600USD and get
and use dreamweaver.

I have to agree that OpenFiler is a pretty neat product. Commercial support
is available for nominal rates from the parent company Xinit. Our other
customers use iSCSI products from LeftHand Networks on pretty heavy
workloads, and they like it as well. Our product FluidVM supports only
iSCSI, so I have tried only the iSCSI part of OpenFiler. These guys are
good. Since it is based on rPath Linux, you'd want to change the login
password of the rPath Agent(running HTTP on port 8004) from the default to
the something more secure. It is a security issue not many people are aware
of.

The UNIX philosophy is several things. And several parts that make up a
whole. But I am yet to see the UNIX philosophy being applied to GUI
effectively. It is applied programatically and internally. GStreamer comes
to mind. As far as a simple user of the GUI is concerned, I am unable to
visualize how a user can apply the UNIX way of doing things and still remain
sane. There are several powerful GUI applications available today. OOo,
Firefox, etc. They run fine on UNIX, but where is the UNIX way of doing
things when you are using these apps?

We are talking about the differences between a user who want to use a simple
GUI application and a pipes happy developer. I'm sure there is a difference.
With Linux going mainstream, there will be more and more users who will just
want to applications running on Linux(they actually won't care if it is
FreeBSD) without worrying about the UNIX way of doing things. The first
things they are going to be looking for is alternatives to Windows based
software. They won't give a damn about the UNIX way of doing things.

Good work on setting up samba.

Strange that your samba shares are slower than windows. Are you using
Vista+SP1 or XP+SP2? I have seen a report that one needs the latest
samba version for vista+sp1 because M$ introduced some new
functionality for file sharing methods (sorry don't know the details).

You may have to do some performance tweaking.

Personally, I have not touched samba for > 1 year so cannot help you
with specifics.

I suggest you search through the SAMBA FAQs and mail list archives
(www.samba.org), I am sure others have experienced the same and got
their solutions there.

2008-05-16 Thread Shakthi Kannan
Hi,

I conducted a "Debian GNU/Linux Installation" session as part of the
first day of the 15-day Industry oriented summer school program,
conducted by FSF-AP chapter, today, May 16, 2008, at Satyam Learning
Centre Institute of Engineering and Technology, Piglipur village,
Hayath Nagar, Andhra Pradesh (few kilometers past Ramoji Film City).

The photos are available at:
http://www.shakthimaan.com/Mambo/gallery/album44

I would like to thank FSF-AP for the arrangements. Due to official
work, I was able to spend only one day. This program is conducted in
parallel in three other colleges outside of Hyderabad. In the evening,
they provide training on team-building, communication skills,
personality development, and other soft skills.

Please check http://swecha.org/ for more details.

Students were mostly from Andhra Pradesh, and few from Tamil Nadu. The
INR 1500 cost for the program is inclusive of stay, food, and training
(lectures, and lab-usage) for the 15 days.

Most of organizers are volunteers - students, academicians or people
working in the Industry in Hyderabad. They also meet during the
weekends at:

FSF India A.P Chapter,
Flat No.201, Karan Apartments,
(exactly opposite to petrol bunk)
Paradise,
Secunderabad.
Landmark: Beside Sandarshini hotel.
