[Ilugc] [OT]Walk-A-Thon Supporting Net Neutrality on April 23rd in Chennai

2015-04-22 Thread sibi kanagaraj
Dear all ,

Much has been spoken and done online about Net Neutrality . Let us now
take our efforts offline.

Many internet users are not noticing the Net Neutrality issue either
because they don't understand what Net Neutrality is or they don't think
it's a serious problem for the average internet user.

So, FSFTN has decided to conduct a Public Awareness Campaign & to take the
message of Net Neutrality to the streets. The event will be held on April
23 (a day before the deadline that TRAI had given us).

Meeting fellow Internet citizens & like-minded people who support Net
Neutrality will be an awesome experience for all of us.

Posters & pamphlets will be issued to the public. Join us in protecting the
Internet.

Netizens of Chennai, Unite!

[Ilugc] Difference between sudo apt-get install and installing from source

2014-10-12 Thread sibi kanagaraj
Hello all ,

What is the difference between sudo apt-get install tesseract and
installing from source .
Let me explain the context so that it could give a clear picture .

I wanted to work with Tesseract and build better Training Data for Tamil
language as well as see if any modifications could be done to engine also
to make it more responsive for Tamil .
1.Hence installed Tesseract via sudo apt-get install tesseract .
2.I could see that the files and folders relating to tessdata were created
in /usr/share/tesseract-ocr
3.And installed all the necessary packages as mentioned here
https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/Compiling
4.Now the command tesseract is working fine .
5.I wanted to see the debugging of the system , hence posted a question
here
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/tesseract-ocr/BxZvoUlxjOc
6.I was asked to perform the make file operations in Java folder .
7.Since within the /usr/share I could not find java folder , I created a
folder and tried to do the make .But it did not work out .
8.As per zdenop reply in the above and Arun Pandian's reply to an earlier
mail , I am trying to configure it from the source and hence created a
clone using
git clone https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/
9.Here I could find the /java folder .
10.Trying to find answer via search engine leads me here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/335684/installation-difference-between-from-source-and-apt-get
But I am not satisfied with the answer

My questions are
1.What is the difference between package installation and installing from
source ?
2.Where can I find the files if I am doing a package installation ?
3.Am I doing the entire process wrong ?

The core of the initial mail writer's argument was a space for him to talk
with people .Sadly , no one was even ready to discuss on it .
Lets not pounce on some one who comes with a budding idea and tear it
apart . At the best , arrange a place for meeting . Allow him to address
people and give out his views . If anybody has issues , please raise it
there . Generally , there are 2 kinds of issues - People with hidden agenda
and people who make genuine mistakes . Lets not confuse one for the other .

Hi ,

The movie is available under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 . The license allows one to

   - *Share* — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format

And there was no monetary benefit collected out of this . And it was a free
(Free as in Free Coffee) event for participants , which

ideally satisfies the *NonCommercial * aspect of the license .

And its further mentioned in the license that "

   - *No additional restrictions* — You may not apply legal terms or
technological
   measures <http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/#> that
legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits."

*Note :* If at all there was a violation , its a genuine case that we might
have misunderstood the clauses of the license . In that case , please let
us know so that we can rectify them .

[Ilugc] Report on FSFTN Summer Camp 2014

Dear all,

Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu conducted 5-day long Summer Camp in the
green and beautiful campus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras on
various Free Software technologies and the philosophy behind Free Software.

The workshop was attended by 117 participants from not less than 43
educational institutions. The Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu has
always encouraged women participation in technology and has also taken
initiatives to ensure the same. The Summer Camp’14 saw over half the
participants being women. The same holds good with the volunteers at the
workshop. This is a remarkable leap from the previous year and sets a good
benchmark for the next year.

Detailed report , blogs of participants and volunteers are present here .

I would request for input from community members on some ««for sure don't

would like to give some wow features in free software technologies . Apart
from philosophical part , would also like to give «« ways to contribute to

how free software can bring about socially targeted solutions .

If you could help me in making the presentation , it would be great. I

Development board in the sense ? I tried to follow the steps which were
given here .

http://ecos.sourceware.org/getstart.html

1.yum install compat-libstdc++-33

2. Next to know my system architecture used
less /proc/cpuinfo and then installed the tool chain for my architecture
which was Intel X86

3.wget --passive-ftp ftp://ecos.sourceware.org/pub/ecos/ecos-install.tcl

4.sh ecos-install.tcl

5.Next I tried to invoke the ecos configuration tool .
As mentioned in the ecos 3.0 user guide , which was got from
http://ecos.sourceware.org/docs-3.0/
/*
Add the eCos Configuration Tool install directory to your PATH, for example:
export PATH=/opt/ecos/ecos/bin:$PATH
*/

Till here it worked for me .

The next step was mentioned as

/*You may run configtool with zero, one or two arguments. You can specify
the eCos repository location, and/or
an eCos save file (extension .ecc) on the command line. The ordering of
these two arguments is not significant.
For example:
configtool /opt/ecos/ecos/packages myfile.ecc
*/

Here I got stuck .

Upon reading this http://tesseract-ocr.repairfaq.org/

and I quote

"Tesseract is a commercial quality OCR engine originally developed at
Hewlett-Packard between 1985 and 1995. In 1995, this engine was among the
top three evaluated by UNLV <http://www.isri.unlv.edu/ISRI/OCRtk> (link's
dead - read background
here<http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/TestingTesseract>).
In 2005, Hewlett-Packard and UNLV open-sourced and it is now freely
available under the Apache
2.0<http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html>license. Most
notably, this means that you
*CAN* use tesseract in a commercial product *WITHOUT* releasing the
sources. That means that you can only *politely ask* to see them... keep
this in mind in the forums!"

is it possible that , I give my contributions to Tesseract , and still ,
its legally permissible that the code can be used for commecial purpose
without releasing the sources ?

[Ilugc] Fwd: [FSFTN] Wiki Women Workshop on Women's Day

From: Srravya C

Subject: [FSFTN] Wiki Women Workshop on Women's Day
To: mailingl...@fsftn.org

On International Women's Day (March 8), a Wikipedia Workshop for Women was
conducted at College of Engineering, Guindy, (CEG) Anna University. It was
jointly organized by Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu (FSFTN) and CEG's
GNU/Linux Users Group (CEGLUG).
Conducted as an all-girls workshop, the workshop was attended by 40
students from the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and
Information Science and Technology (IST).
The one day workshop was aimed at encouraging women to contribute to
Wikipedia and thereby reducing the current gender bias.
The participants were not only taught how to contribute to Wikipedia but
also about the importance of their contributions and how they can make a
difference.

The session was handled by Mr. Sibi from Free Software Foundation, Tamil
Nadu. At the end of the session, the participants were encouraged to start
contributing to Wikipedia as well as its sister projects. The feedback
collected showed positive response and a few had requested for follow up
sessions.

Re: [Ilugc] Fwd: [FSFTN] Free software calendar for the year 2014

2013-12-06 Thread sibi kanagaraj
Dear all ,

We would start working on it from today . I would like to give the initial
work division as follows .Please feel free to edit it .
1.Regarding coordination of our work and to avoid any redundancy , we can
go for a group or a private ether pad .
2.In that lets list out what all free knowledge things that have to be
present for a month .
3.lets also use a git if needed
4.then lets work upon finalized list and then start implementing it in
inkscape
5.lets keep initial deadline as 25th December , so that we can launch the
calendar by January 1st .
6.the work has to be in creative commons with licence version above 3.0
7. please have it consideration that , diversity issues not restricted to
localisation and participation of women have to be included to make it more
inclusive.

Hello Narendra ,
I think it would be right to put it in courier charge .
Because

This could be brought under printing cost .
In the best case , you could   mail to  wtre...@trinity.edu. and inform them
about this .
Also try to mail Mr., William F. Trench as it would nullify any copyright
provision , if you get the consent of the author .

That was an entirely new post. Just 2 lines were from the previous mail .
I am fully supportive in case of interleaved posting .
But when  some one new does a top or bottom posting why we need to be so harsh

That was my point over there .
Not being harsh isn't a strict rule written any where but a basic human nature .

2010-09-28 Thread sibi
Ah .personal attack ...
I love it :)

>cool - you were in Coimbatore and never started a lug or a glug and
never even contributed to any of the foss events in Coimbatore

Want my track record in it ?

Here it comes .

You missed my point . I never look up or go behind cheap publicity .

1.When I was in Chennai , just as a student I used to travel the ends of
Chennai , to organise and conduct events . With just a 30 rupees bus
ticket .I have never got the esteemed privilage of sitting in government's
money and travelling in cars nor sitting in AC rooms . Sweat - I enjoyed
each and every drop of it when it trickled down .

2.Chennai colleges know it - Want to know the exact students I met or the
number of colleges I traveled ??

3.I was in Coimbatore for 7 months - a split of 2 months during june -
august 2009 and the last few months of my career - 3 months .SOme people
sitting in Chennai have been here since ages and allowed proprietary to
florish , wat could have i done in 3 months ? Thats the reason i could
not contribute .Even in that dire circumstances , i have reached
engineering colleges , polytechnic colleges inn and around Coimbatore ,
plus Erode .

4.In the moths I was in Bangalore , I worked with most of the Glugs in
Bangalore colleges, simultaneous member of Free software movement
karnataka and Free software foundation, Tamilnadu . - Please refer to fsmk
(Free software movement karnataka ) for my contribution towars colleges in
Bangalore , Mysore .

5.I never told that you are not a team player, I just told we need team
players . Long ago I heard a tamil proverb
(நுணலும்
தன்வாயால்
கெடுm) , was searching for an example , gods grace
, found you .

6."No use" - Good word , good word . Appreciated .People always think to
impose their character on others.

7.Shove - just now I referred my oxford dictionary and found that shove
means Push . Yes , we will push free software into young minds .

I would also shove anti-GNU people .

Since it was a personal attack on me , i too have attacked personally .
Who ever has/have committed mistake please replace "people" with your name
and read it and get angry . Others , I never hesitate - I am sorry :( . I
never meant to hurt you .

Quite interesting argument

Long back when i was introduced to Linux philosophy , the first teachings
was that don't call it as linux , call it as Gnu Linux .

That's the reason behind calling it as GLUGS .
Please correct me if I am wrong in this front.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU/Linux_naming_controversy
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html#why
Quoting from the final link

Why do you call it GNU/Linux and not Linux?
Most operating system distributions based on Linux as kernel are
basically modified versions of the GNU operating system. We began
developing GNU in 1984, years before Linus Torvalds started to write
his kernel. Our goal was to develop a complete free operating system.
Of course, we did not develop all the parts ourselves—but we led the
way. We developed most of the central components, forming the largest
single contribution to the whole system. The basic vision was ours
too.

In fairness, we ought to get at least equal mention.

See Linux and the GNU Project and GNU Users Who Have Never Heard of
GNU for more explanation, and The GNU Project for the history.

I would like to thank FOSS club of Jaya engineering college for giving me
such a wonderful platform to speak on .

The SFD was more or like a Festival there .

The number of stalls truly amazed me and the enthusiasm showed by them
gives me a greater confidence that the days of proprietary softwares are
numbered .

The students in the stall elucidated what actual Free S/w means . Its not
just an intellectual alternative to proprietary softwares but a social
movement which would spread its wings to all parts of TamilNadu in near
future .

The HOD sir has to be applauded for his greater interest . I thank him and
also congratulate him from bottom of my heart for spreading the message of
free S/W.

Each and every student had a participation in it .

The community model model is evolving .:)

Happily,
