As we know AD is costly and closed. I preferred him to use OpenDs. Now we
have a problem in migration those used. We planned to export schemas in
 LDIF

 completely using the above method.

Is there any tools to migrate the from AD ? Is there any other way to

Re: [Ilugc] GNU/Linux Distribution Suggestion

2011-04-23 Thread subhojit ojha

Most Linux distros are resource unfriendly.

I don't thing that it is correct.

I have a CentOS server which run as a virtual machine( KVM) and it only
consume 12 MB of RAM.

It depends on us to choose the packages while OS installation. If you remove
unwanted default packages which you doesn't need while installation, you can
run Linux easily with low memory.

I am also using Debian Lenny (as base OS for Virtualization) and I didn't
install any X window component on it.

This Debian machine hardly consume 250 MB while no Virtual machine is
running on top of it.

Can you explain more on directory integrator?
 What it does?

Do you mean any LDAP kind of thing?

check this link

http://dictionary.sensagent.com/ibm%20tivoli%20directory%20integrator/en-en/

One of the paragraph from this article is here:

I have 37 LDAP servers made by all major vendors, like AD, ITDS, Sun ONE,
eDirectory and Domino. These must be kept synchronized in real time to
accommodate development and testing requirements. TDI quickly and reliably
automated that painful and time consuming process. The same holds true for
synchronizing databases for hardware inventory and security.

And finally, one of the key difference between these two is, 'getopts' is
POSIX shell built-in, where 'getopt' is a separate executable living inside
'/usr/bin/'. Another difference is, 'getopts' cannot parse options like
 '--big-option' whereas 'getopt' can.

I hope above examples will help you to understand getopts and getopt. Its a
standard practice to parse options inside your shell script using
getopts/getopt. Please read 'man getopt' and 'man sh'(then search for
 getopts) for reference.

Re: [Ilugc] How to Encrypt VNC

2010-04-05 Thread subhojit ojha

 Dear All,
We installed VNC successfully and using it in centOS.By default VNC is
unencrypted. How do we change it into encrypted VNC service.thanks in
 advance

The easiest, but most effective, way to secure our connection to the VNC
server is to connect through an encrypted*SSH tunnel*. This way the whole
session will be encrypted.

The rest assume that you have the SSH server up and running on your remote
machine (server.example.com) and you know what SSH tunnels are.

So, what we are going to do is to create an encrypted tunnel, and connect to
our VNC server through it. We also want this tunnel to be *automatically
closed* as soon as we shut down vncviewer. All this is done with the
following command:

# ssh -f -L 25903:127.0.0.1:5903 leop...@server.example.com sleep 10;
vncviewer 127.0.0.1:25903:3

This is what it does:

   - *-L 25903:127.0.0.1:5903* forwards our local port 25903 to port 5903 on
the remote machine. In other words, it creates the tunnel.
   - *-f* forks the SSH session to the background, while *sleep* is being
executed on the remote machine. This ssh option is needed because we want to
execute the following command (vncviewer) in the same *local* machine’s
   terminal.
   - *vncviewer* connects to the forwarded local port 25903 in order to
connect to the VNC server through the encrypted tunnel.

The *sleep* command is of major importance in the above line as it keeps the
encrypted tunnel open for 10 seconds. If no application uses it during this
period of time, then it’s closed. Contrariwise, if an application uses it
during the 10 sec period, then the tunnel remains open until this
application is shut down. This way the tunnel is *automatically closed* at
the time we close vncviewer’s window, without leaving any SSH processes
running on our workstation. This is pure convenience! More information can
be found at the Auto-closing SSH
Tunnelshttp://www.g-loaded.eu/2006/11/24/auto-closing-ssh-tunnels/
 article.

Using SSH tunnels to conect to your VNC server has two advantages:

   1. The whole session is encrypted.
   2. Keeping port 5903 open on your remote machine *is no longer needed*,
since all take place through the SSH tunnel. So, noone will know that you
run a VNC server on the remote machine.

For more detail info, check these links:-
http://www.g-loaded.eu/2005/11/10/configure-vnc-server-in-fedora/

Their volumes are low - they buy from the manufacturer and do their
own integration to ensure all devices on the laptops work with the
pre-installed Linux distro that they ship. That costs time and money.

  what about thinkpad or vaio.

For the most out of box support on Linux; any Intel Centrino family
chipset based laptop will do. Beware of KVM support though - most
laptop BIOS are b0rked and do not allow loading of KVM modules even
though the CPU may support it.

As for Thinkpad v/s Vaio. I would lean towards Thinkpad, IIRC some
thinkpad models come with FreeDOS thereby giving you a lower price
point. Again look for Centrino family chip set.

To the best of my knowledge, Sony has never put a non-Windows Vaio
whereas most of the other manufacturers have; that is a decisive
 factor for me.

Another more important issue is about warranty - check with
manufacturer for hardware support if you do install Linux on a system
 that came with Windows pre-installed.

Re: [Ilugc] How to customize a pc to cluster

2010-02-24 Thread subhojit ojha

First off please go through the doc of Redhat cluster suite. Remember
it is sold as RHEL Advanced Platform with considerably higher list
price that Standard and you will need to buy two subscriptions as a
HA cluster by definition consists of more than one node and a lot of
redudndancy in just about every element in the stack -- be it active
 active or active passive.

Ok. having built and administered few HA RHCS, let me attempt to
explain with my very little knowledge.

Clusters are used for different purposes. High Availability (HA), High
performance computing (There is one in IITM - Check it out if you are
 allowed)

From your requirement it seems that you need HA cluster.

To ensure that the service does not go down if one of the member node
dies. This can be active passive or active/active (lot of
 pre-conditions, ifs-buts in this case).

Please think as service as an NFS server/apache server/database
 server/terminal server (s/server/service/g)

Think of cluster as a phantom device (somewhat like Virtual IP)
wherein the actual work is delegated the to one of its members.

Who delegates and how it is another subject in itself aka load
balancing (Checkout Linux virtual server or LB devices)

Once a service is under control of cluster, none of the individual
nodes can start it using /etc/init.d/service start. In fact it
 should never be.

Hope this intro is sufficient to whet your appetite.

If you have understood the above please revisit the earlier links by
one of the very erudite members of this list. then come back with
 further questions.

I would suggest you use centos to experiment. No debian at this stage
please. It will only confuse you. You will find a lot more people who
have implemented multi-node Redhat clusters so the probability of
 getting answers is higher

And please note that *any* clustering is complex if you dont
understand the underlying concepts. Administering and troubleshooting
the cluster is non-trivial and requires a lot of time and effort
investment. It is not simple as dong a partition/install packages. It
 requires more.

Thank you sir for giving useful information, I m looking to build a cluster
with very low cost, something like this http://helmer.sfe.se/
is there any alternative I can get in Cent OS same as what Redhat advance
platform provide.

Thank you

[Ilugc] How to customize a pc to cluster

2010-02-22 Thread subhojit ojha
Hi all,

cannot afford money for buying a hardware cluster, so I thought to make a pc
to be a cluster with little modification.
I have attained the GNUINFY in pune, there I seen Mr. Mrugesh Karnik has
configured redhat cluster using four PCs. Since, I doesn't have any
experience to work with clusters, I need ur help to make a PC to work as
cluster. I also need suggestion that what are all things I need to modify in

Re: [Ilugc] How to customize a pc to cluster

2010-02-22 Thread subhojit ojha

There are many types in clustering.

 High Availability
 Load balancing
 Computing
 Grids

 Read this link.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_%28computing%29

You have to decide and choose the right type of clustering and tools
 based on your requirement.

Google can give you tons of links.

Dear Shrinivasan,
Thanks for ur reply, I have gone through the above
link but not understood fully. Actually, I just need that whenever there is
high load coming to my server, automatically the application or OS has to be
transfer to cluster, I think it may be exactly Load-balancing cluster ( I
have not understood HA cluster) also if my server is getting crash then also
the parent OS, child OS and applications has to be transfer to the cluster(
i.e; cluster PC) without stopping any OS or application.
I just need, my server should run always without any intervene.
As I mention before I m going to use one or two PC to act as cluster, so plz
suggest me how can I achieve it...I have decided to use Red hat cluster suit
but I don't know how it will work with my Debian based server.

  3. If yes, then how.

HTTPS cannot work with named vhosts. You need a dedicated
IP address or different TCP port numbers for every HTTPS site
 you want to host.

This is clearly explained in the apache ssl faq:

sir, can u plz clarify these part mentioned below multiple ports (eg:
running ssl) and how to achieve it and also can u tell me the Maximum
number of name based virtual hosts apache supports?

To use name-based virtual hosting, you must designate the IP address (and
possibly port) on the server that will be accepting requests for the hosts.
This is configured using the
NameVirtualHosthttp://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhostdirective.
In the normal case where any and all IP addresses on the server
should be used, you can use * as the argument to
NameVirtualHosthttp://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost.
If you're planning to use multiple ports (e.g. running SSL) you should add a
Port to the argument, such as *:80. Note that mentioning an IP address in a
NameVirtualHosthttp://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhostdirective
does not automatically make the server listen to that IP address.
See Setting which addresses and ports Apache
useshttp://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/bind.htmlfor more details. In
addition, any IP address specified here must be
associated with a network interface on the server.

Hi,
my thought about certificate is not like this, its true that many person
who have certificate but doesn't have any knowledge. Many people who has
written certification exam are force to write because the companies are
asking for that, especially freshers

even i have seen many people who is experienced but doesn't have that much
knowledge.freshers are force to write certification exam not by their
will but for getting job.no body like to spend money for certificate,
but during interview they have to compete the people

even i m also against these certification, i m also a fresher and have done
RHCE, after completing my certification i didn't find that my knowledge have
increased in one day, i m studying Linux every day, finding the real time
problems from ILUGC and then trying to implement it and finding the
solution, linux is like that until u will not face problem, u cannot learn
it properly or cannot understand why the problem has occur

Linux is very vast, a fresher doesn't know from where to start and few
people r there to help them in learning linux, doing free lancing is not
easy for everyone. My suggestion is that people should have to learn by
their own interest and the companies those who r providing certificate in
linux, should have to provide a good text, which should contain a brief
explanation and shouldn't make the certification as business..

I also request ILUGC to come forward and to talk with universities, college
and also diploma colleges to go with open source.I also request
knowledgeable person to come to forward to provide at least one day seminar
in diploma and engineering colleges..

The problem is that many colleges doesn't have good staff to guide them, so
many students are loosing their interest and many doesn't know abt open
source...
