Nice to hear that , looking forward for more reports/blogs on this :) Pavithran Thank you for the opportunity to present Open Source Telephony on this SFD. It was the first time we have setup such a stall. It was personally a good and enriching experience to interact with the community at Chennai and students / visitors who visited the stalls. I look forward to participating more actively in the open source community activities of Chennai in the near future. We have a list of the visitors who requested more information and expressed interest in learning more about software freedom in general and FOSS projects specifically. We will be contacting them with further information. The primary content of our presentation was derived from www.voip-info.org , a great wiki for all things telephony. Our demonstration was on Asterisk (www.asterisk.org) and the Vicidial Call Center Suite (www.vicidial.org). We showed a hardware telephone gateway, Audiocodes 24 port analog gw (not connected really) an end-point Grandstream IP phone (not connected) a software phone, Twinkle, running on the Ubuntu desktop and IAX2client, a mobile (IP phone) client app on android, along with live demonstrations of calls over Asterisk to an ASR(automatic speech recognition) and DTMF enabled IVR. The presentations were done on Ubuntu Server running gnome and OO. The demo was with Twinkle a SIP phone registered to a remote asterisk server on a public IP, conectivity over Tata Photon. The photon was working ok in the first half, but often dropped to zero signal in the afternoon session or had too high latency / jitters for VoIP demo, so there were no live demos in the second half. Since we were forewarned about power outages and we were not using a laptop, we had a one hour UPS backup, which served us well. I would like to put together an introduction to FOSS and an invitation to join ILUGC for the above mentioned list of visitors. Of course, we will add open source telephony links. Please let me have any information that you have ready-made. Hi @Aravind anna, @Raman P, @Vignesh anna, et al First of all a big thank you... Yes FOSS is good... :-) Actually my given topic for the speech at Jaya Engineering College was for creating a Fedora remix, but I couldn't do that because all the students were 1st years who didn't know anything about Linux. So I proceeded to talk to them about the history of Free Software and why they should use GNU/Linux. My thanks to the college chairman for offering me a seat.. But IMHO, the most important person for helping Jaya Engineering College is Kumaran Sir, the HOD of CSC dept. [Ilugc] Software Freedom Day 2011 registration started
-- Forwarded message -- From: Frederic Muller - SFI f...@softwarefreedomday.org Date: 23 July 2011 18:30 Subject: [SFD-announce] SFD 2011 registration is LIVE!!! To: SFD announcements sfd-annou...@sf-day.org, Discussions about planning for SFD (english) planning...@sf-day.org Dear all, This is with a great pleasure (and small delay) that we are announcing registration opening for SFD 2011! In fact some of you have already started to create you wiki pages and participated in the soft opening and registration testing that we started 2 days ago. Most bugs should have been cleared out of the way and I remain available for any problem you may encounter through email or on IRC (#SFD on freenode). Major highlights of the registration rewriting: - I didn't get any help from anyone so it took more time (I am no developer) - UTF-8 support, so all those South-American addresses we used to struggle with because of corrupted letters should be problems of the past - Better SFD Wiki URL check (I'd say 100% reliable now) - Ported to python so I can 'maintain' it now - The form asks for and matches SFD wiki login and email address which will allow you to update map coordinates later (still need to code that update bit) - Fixed Open Street Map marker click offset - Total event count on the global map page - Easy integration with the current web site design, and any design. That will make it easier for others to use it since we said we would release the code (still needs to do some cleanup and documentation writing though) - Saves directly in CSV format making it a lot easier to handle that big file at the end of the registration period. There are still one or two known issues (like the phone number format only gets check on the server side, requiring you to refill the form if you got it wrong - but we're working on it). Hopefully it should make the whole experience better and allow us to fix or improve it based on the feedback we get. A special thanks goes to Charles from Canada who spotted a very annoying address input bug and Jean from Belgium who sent me an extensive report, and all the others who participated. The other news for the year is that we are cash positive again and goodies are in production as we speak. This year we have raised sufficient funds to produce team packs for 200 teams (50% of last year total registered events). I want to particularly thank our sponsors who are making this possible, namely Canonical, Google, Nokia/Qt in China and Linode. We have also attracted more media sponsors this year (from 2 to 5 in total now) where we are running a A4/Letter size ad in the August/September edition for most (some are quarterly magazines). In no specific order those are Linux Magazine (long time partner), Linux Journal (yeah, welcome!), Ubuntu User, Admin Magazine and Smart Developer. And we are still in discussion with 2 or 3 other organizations. This year we also had a lot of back and forth with the Free Software Foundation about the impact of distributing non-free GNU/Linux distributions and pretending 'it is ok'. At the end proprietary software remains proprietary be it an office application or a device driver. Our objective is to educate the world about using high quality free and open source software and that is what we should be doing. This is a long topic and we will get back to it later this summer. Like last year there are about 10 days to goodies deadline (limited to the first 200 teams and Canonical is still providing Ubuntu CDs), so just go create a new team page under http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2011 (not continent this year) and fill that form on http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py Last but not least I want to thank all the new volunteers who have joined the SFD global marketing team and are helping with global tasks. One of the net outcome has been our new SFD logo for 2011 which we will keep moving forward (thank you David, Jeff and Maxus Singapore) and the multimedia DVD which we have finally managed to make (thank you Diego, Marcos, Pockey). All artworks are available on http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Artwork and under a CC-BY license. And happy SFD preparations! Do subscribe to the discuss mailing list[1] if you haven't yet, read SFD Planet [2] read our blog[3] to keep posted (or RSS feed[4] to it). Any question do let us know. I have not hard-coded location and link, so that you can change them if you want to promote some other SFD event(like in Jaya, for example). Defaults are 'Birla Planetarium, Chennai' and ' http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2010/Asia/India/Chennai/ilugc' respectively. You can change title too. Since every visible portion is made editable, Tamil Blogs can also utilize this. Just change values in textbox to Tamil when blogger asks you to change defaults if necessary. Go to the page in which you can edit page design (in Blogger this is Dashboard--Design), click on 'Add Gadget' -- 'Add gadget by URL' and give the above URL. Some services like blogger will ask you to change default values and in others you have to change them after adding by selecting Edit Gadget. -- *அகிலன்* (Akilan R) (http://www.coding-aviator.blogspot.com) *I should have no use for a paradise in which I should be deprived of the right to prefer hell.* --Jean Rostand ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

If one asks when India got independence, all Indians know the answer (I believe they should know) - 15th of August 1947. After this independence we have attained the rights and duties in political and social domains under the constitution we have established. In the same way do we have freedom in all parts of our lives? After the 20th century revolution in information technology, what is the state of our rights in the computer domain? It may be news to many of us that our rights over the software we use have been snatched away by the profit motive of commercial organisations. Since 1980 thinkers worldwide have raised the flag of struggle against the commercial companies who are trying to increase their capital by snatching away the rights of users, students and people in the software domain (does this remind one of the east India company?) Many experts in the software domain are creating, releasing, exchanging and improving software that is unfettered, in a manner that respects the rights of others. Software freedom day is observed worldwide to celebrate this unfettered software. Through this celebration, instances of use of unfettered software products by the public all over the world in educational institutions, government offices, homes, offices and all other places are shown. goal: To create an environment in the field of information technology where everyone can freely mix with everyone else, create new products, exchange products in a free, open united manner. objectives: * To celebrate software freedom and those who work for it * to inspire the public to use unfettered software and open standards and to create a general understanding of software freedom * to create opportunities for everyone to get and participate * to inspire debates about the rights and duties of the emerging information based society * to act along with organisations and individuals who have this same goal software freedom in Chennai This event that is celebrated worldwide on the 3rd Saturday of September will take place this year on September the 18th. 1. [Ilugc] Software Freedom Day 2009, Hyderabad
Hi, On September 19, 2009, Software Freedom Day at Hyderabad: * I visited Devnar Foundation for the Blind, a follow-up to last weekends' installation. Most of their systems have been donated. So, there are different motherboards, and brands. Apparently, the local AMC support guy who had come today didn't have drivers for different proprietary OSes, and for different motherboards. I then migrated their office computers to Fedora 11 :) Now, they have HCL, Wipro computers running Fedora. I have disabled many start-up services, to boot the systems faster. I also adjusted Orca pitch, rate settings for clarity. It should take them some time to get accustomed to the American accent. * Thanks to Prof. Haasan, Department of Astronomy, Osmania University, I have deployed Fedora 11 repository (29 GB) at one of their department systems. They are interested in creating a Fedora Spin for Astronomy, and release it, as this is the International Year of Astronomy [1]. I have provided Rahul Sundarams' e-mail contact to them. Re: [Ilugc] Software Freedom Day 08 at Kamban Engg collge, Tiruvannamalai
Dear all It was wonderful function at Kamban Engg College. The event was for 2 days i.e 19th and 20th sep. We have planned for about 20 stalls as posted earlier. Thyagu went there on 17th itself and started teaching the student volunteers. I joined him on 18th. Baskar, Linxpert ceo Baskar, joined us on 19th. Ravi and Mohan joined on 20th. The students have showed exemplary interest in the exhibits. They grasped the things well even though the time was very short. In all about 150 students volunteered for the demo. The demo was very well received by colleges and schools nearby. Roughly 4000 students of engg colleges, polytechnic, arts science colleges, teachers training and schools attended the LDD. Our LUG team gave them introduction about foss before they went to view exhibits. The KEC students have formed lug name Kamban Linux User Community and the same was inaugurated by the college chairman. This event was, in my opinion one of finest that ILUGC has done recently. The success was the trio combination - the management, faculty and students. The management was very committed to the success of event. The faculty especially their HOD Mr.Jothishkumar was very highly dedicated to this. Indeed in he spent several sleepless nights, camping in the college. Hats off to him. The students - really pearls. Very highly motivated, intelligent and dedicated especially one Shivamoorthy. I am sure FOSS community will get few more sudharshans from here. Over all very excellent event. On behalf of ILUGC I thank the College Management,Faculty especially HOD Mr..Jothishkumar and the students for the opportunity extended to us. Raman.P Did you know?
