Did you ask Google about promiscuous mode?

> Please elaborate :-(

Every Ethernet card has a hardware (MAC) address. Every Ethernet frame
("packet") has a source and destination address, and is broadcast over
the network. In normal operation, an Ethernet card receives only those
frames that are addressed to itself (i.e., its own MAC address matches
the destination of the frame).

In promiscuous mode, however, the card receives all the frames it sees
on the network, regardless of their destination address. (Which means
that you can, on a shared network segment, see traffic between hosts
other than your own.)

2004-01-09 Thread fatbuddha

Hi,
I beg to differ with LL on buying a book . It's all right if you want to learn fast
paced structred way . But I feel best way is to read some basic tutorial and then
learn what ever you need from there onwards . The book approach IMHO is too structred
for something as rich featured as linux . This way you experiment more and learn more
of the system ;>

Hello Vijay,

It is good that you are trying to learn, however I
doubt that anyone would be able to give you as much
details as you would like to know. You should buy a
book on system administration. There are many good
books available. You can search on net and read users
reviews to find which book to buy. Install Linux on
some PC and try them. You could use "man" command to
get more details. If you get stuck with something, you
should post to this list.

It's a mode in which an Ethernet card receives all frames on the network
(instead of only those that are addressed to it). In this case, tcpdump
is setting the promiscuous mode on your interface, which will return to
normal when you exit tcpdump.

This macro creates a PDF document from your OpenOffice.org original with

There is PDF creation support in OpenOffice. However, this does not
include

yolinux.com

but, the greatest thing you can do for yourself,
is to buy a good linux book, that costs rs 250 to rs 350 (or another Rs
100 if you wish)

that teaches you everything to get you started on basics.

this is THE most economical way to learn linux.
because a book will cost you LESS
than bijli, online time, monitor eyestrain, haphazard approach,
and email patchwork tutorials.

and certainly a micro-fraction of a full-blown course at a computer
institute.
who will also urge you to get a book.

don't ask me to recommend a book.
goto a bookshop, browse, pick up atleast 2 or 3 books so you feel
comfortable.

ignore advise given by others to read the online documentation, or the
archived documentation on redhat cds, etc.

those are mere references once you know the basics right.

for those in a tearing hurry and tremendous impatience,
raj mathur has this orange+black colored pill with the linux kernel
ground to a fine powder mixed with exotic herbs solidified with some
gnu.

you could ask him for one. apparantly it provides an instant
understanding of gnulinux. but it costs a lot.

rumours have it it is a placebo. but raj insists if you did not
understand, it is because you probably need double-strength. that costs
double of the first one. and so on until you understand.
guaranteed, you will understand finally

Re: [ilugd] To BE A LINUX ADMINSTRATOR

2004-01-09 Thread Ambar Roy
> (1) Apache Web Server
First read /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf on your RH box. This file will give
you some good info on what needs to be done. Then read the apache manual. If
you are still stuck, use google, and if you continue to be stuck, feel free
to drop a mail on this list! One thing to be careful with apache is that
file permissions pay a big role, and a lot of problems can be traced to
owner/group and permissions.

> (2) Send Mail Server
There is a whole book on sendmail by O' Reily. If you need to learn
sendmail, then this is the book. OTOH consider implementing qmail, postfix
or exim. All of these are in general easier to configure than sendmail, more
secure and faster.

> (5) Domain Name Server
There are tons of HOWTOs on configuring bind. Start with a few of them,
learn about the basic DNS protocol and the way things are organized. Also
get to know the file formats and conventions for bind. Bind is easy once u
know the basics, but pay specific attention to the config files!

BTW.. do read the howto on each subject first. They are really good, and
better than most people can explain general configuration. I find that with
Linux servers, reading the howtos gets you going. For advanced issues, ask
specific questions, and you will get good answers.
