[ilugd] View the surface of Mars

2004-01-18 Thread Arindam Dey
URL may be wrapped

http://edition.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/16/space.mars.java.reut/index.html

The above is a CNN story about how JAVA is being used to provide the
interface to control the Mars rover or something to that effect.

Now the purists( Note the 4 question marks :-) may ask what the heck
does this have to do with Linux ? Hang on.

The story points to the homepage http://mars.telascience.org/ which has
a download option and surprise of surprises it has a port for the Linux
users. So downloaded it and tried to install it(On Fedora and
Slackware). It was a breeze. They are even releasing updates of the
latest Mars pictures which may be incorporated in your installation and
you can virtually tour Mars. Although did not understand quite a few of
the options provided in the interface (got to read the help) it was
quite cool. It spews a lot of debug messages on the terminal and the
perennial problem with Java apps RESOURCE HUNGRY. No flames please these
are the views of a hardcore C/C++ guy and it practically ground my P4,
2.4 GHz, 1024 Mb RAM machine to a halt after I became impatient and
clicked a lot of images one after the other to populate the thumbnails.
Had to grep and kill it finally.

Apart from all this it was nice. Try it.

You can use UML (User Mode Linux) for creating multiple virtual Linux
hosts within a single machine for testing purposes. It's also a neat
way of having privilege separation between multiple users -- give each
an independent Linux machine.

Package: netpbm-free
Vulnerability : insecure temporary files
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids: CAN-2003-0924

netpbm is graphics conversion toolkit made up of a large number of
single-purpose programs. Many of these programs were found to create
temporary files in an insecure manner, which could allow a local
attacker to overwrite files with the privileges of the user invoking a
vulnerable netpbm tool.

For the current stable distribution (woody) these problems have been
fixed in version 2:9.20-8.4.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in
version 2:9.25-9.

We recommend that you update your netpbm-free package.

Upgrade Instructions
-

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.

See what is an operating system..? its the kernel+ filesystem+ some
programms, (and may be a boot loader) boot loader is not exactly in OS,
but u need it anyway...

see u may run it on any BOX, it does not matter, only thing matters, is
the kernel should be supported for it.

6. What was the approach used when first kernel was downloaded and placed to be a

8. I am expecting positive response from your side.

I tried to search on web, but unable to find any this want I want.

The situation with development jobs is not as good as it used to be a few
years back. Nowadays getting a job as a fresher is real tough. If you are
really intrested in getting a Linux job programming in C/C++, then I would
suggest 2 things:

1. Start working with one or more OSS projects in the areas where you would
like to work. Contribute some code, understand the projects, etc. This is
very valuable if you want to get some experience developing linux apps and
would also count as good experience for a lot of people.

2. Subscribe to the Linux India Programmer's List (I don't know how to do
this now, was a member of this list. Last I remember, it was hosted on
SourceForge!) This list has a lot of Linux programmers from India, and
frequently has job postings. In any case this is a good list if you are
programming on Linux.

And keep on applying for every job that even remotely matches your profiles.
And don't forget placement consultants. They are important when you need a
job! Just don't go to the ones who ask for upfront payment. Those are people
you should strictly avoid. Any decent placement consultant would like to
work with you and place you in an appropriate job

Linux programming doesn't have the number of jobs Web Development, J2EE or
MS.NET. And I would agree with your friends that C/C++ jobs are real hard to
land if you don't have a proper engineering or MCA degree.

For C/C++ jobs, one solution that you can is to apply to Quark and keep your
fingers crossed. At least till a year back, they seemed to employ anyone who
was willing to go and work in Chandigarh, and who had some basic C/C++
knowledge. This is based on my assessment of people who were selected by
Quark! According to my friends who have worked there, the company sucks as a
place to work, as their HR practices are quite bad. But then you get to work
for a big name company on some real nice products. Quark has a lot of C/C++
work, but mostly in Mac and Windows platforms. And you can always change to
better companies from there!

Nope. It is like:

Linux Techie : Here, take this manual. It teaches you how to make a
plane. If you cant understand any part of the manual,
only then ask me about the specific difficult part. Show
me that you made an effort yourself to learn at first. I
really cant afford to sit down with you in the plane and
teach you step by step - I have a job to do and a family

This is how open source volunteer support works in principle. When one

Download vmware from the net - it allows you to make virtual machines on
your one single system and then interconnect them... put multiple
linuxes and cluster them. You will not need another computer to do any
kind of testing.

I need a mentor for linux clusters, I have studied 'Building Linux Clusters ' (Oreilly) , but have no workplace to implement them. I need a mentor who can guide me step by step about linux clusters or anyone who want to share his knowledge with me.

looking forward from your side

Re: [ilugd] Can't access internet through proxy server

2004-01-18 Thread Alok Sinha
You need to be more explicit about the error you are getting... but in
the cases that you have recommended

The most likely scenarios are
1. The proxy server is doing a IP (or MAC) based authentication. But
then you should be getting an ACCESS DENIED PAGE.
2. The proxy could be using transparent caching.. but based on IP Access.
3. Check by telnetting into the proxy server port 3128 and type
get www.google.com http/1.1

if you get no output, you will know you are not reaching proxy, else you
should get some response from the proxy... which would tell you what is
not correct.

I checked all the settings of internet explorer which work properly.
Tried all those settings in netscape and konqueror. Still cant access
the name servers. I dont know what login procedure the proxy uses but
I was reported that the systems dont need to authenticate. How's that
possible? Maybe the administrators saved authentication information
in windows and my prof doesn't know about it. How can I figure that
out ?

Just firing up windoz get the systems online. I tried to intall
mozilla browser for windows and it also works with the proxy
settings. Read somewhere on the net that some microsoft proxy servers
use propreitory protocols. Anyone has any ideas what this is?

I exported http_proxy=http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3128/ and other vars but
I guess the system is not being able to authenticate at all. I can
only ping the gateway. Also set the local network access to work
without proxy as set in IE browser. Still no use.

Maybe the browsers use NTLM
authentication(http://davenport.sourceforge.net/ntlm.html) also called
"password-less" auth by some. Last I heard, Firebird supports NTLM.
