Maybe if you explain this error, we can help here too. You would
probably still need to install a local MTA instead. I would recommend
nullmailer(http://untroubled.org/nullmailer/) if you only plan to relay
your outgoing mails to an university mail host.

I have very little experience with sendmail, which personally, I wouldnt
touch even with a long pole because there are so many *much* more sane
replacements available. But again, that is a different topic altogether.

I have no clue why you decide to replace exim - the standard email
 server on debian.

anyways i have installed and configured sendmail on my machine and then
tried to sendmail.pine shows that it is sending the mail..even though it
takes it a while and it actually says it has sent the message
out...however i recieve no message(i am mailing back to myself).i do not

Ok. for one, do you have your hostname correctly put in the /etc/hosts
file? Also, are the DNS settings in /etc/resolv.conf ok? The reason
behind this is that in most cases, sendmail tries to resolve the host of
 the sender.

Also what does a check in /var/log/maillog say? Any change in this file
 after pine sends its mail?

  http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/rmanocha/sendmail.cf

I am also running a firewall which i created using firestarter and i only
opened up ports 22(ssh),80(http) and ftp(i dont know exactly what port
  that is..22/23?).

 21 for control and 20 for ftp-data i think.

Outgoing mails should not have a problem with the firewall.

[ilugd] IMAP makes my server slow ....

2004-02-06 Thread amit sharma
hi,

i am using Red Hat 8.0 (PCQ Version)

i have about 80 users on imap (version imap-2001a-15)
my problem is that the sever gets very slow probably
due to imap access from the users. at any given point
of time
ps -ef|grep imapd shows about 15-20 entries.

1. is the server goes down due to imap only?
2. from where can i obtain the latest imap rpm (if
any)
3. any tips/ tweaks to manage the server better with
imap?

regards,
amit

[ilugd] ILUG-D: Contact Us

2004-02-06 Thread lkgahlot
[Forwarding without prejudice -- Raju]

Message from L.K.Gahlot:

Hello Admin,

I have recently added myself to the member list of this LUG.

I'm a Noida based consultant specializing in Linux and I wanted to post my contact
details on this site but I could not find a place where I could add them.

I wanted to suggest if you guys could add a category under 'Resources' section called
'Consultants' or 'Service Providers'. This category would cater to many individuals
and organisations.

Alternatively, please do let me know which is the right place or category where I
could post my details.

Thanking you

i have about 80 users on imap (version imap-2001a-15)
my problem is that the sever gets very slow probably
due to imap access from the users. at any given point
of time
ps -ef|grep imapd shows about 15-20 entries.

YEs. I had faced a similar problem. The reason behind this is mostly the
wu imapd server which is not exactly the best one available. If you
can create maildirs instead of mboxes for all the users, and can ask
your MTA/MDA to deliver to maildirs instead, you will get a great gain
of performance by usig the courier-imap server instead.

[ilugd] OpenMosix .

2004-02-06 Thread Mejo Jose
Hi,

Has anyone used OpenMosix ? Came to know that it's a great distribution
used for clustering/parallel processing that runs completely out of a
cd, just like Knoppix.
I am the maintainer of http://linux.mejokj.com which distributes cheap
cds of all the Linux distros and Open Source Software. Before including
Openmosix to my list, I would like to get some feedback.
Thanks and regards,

I have one system containing Redhat Linux 9.0 and windows 98 dual
 boot.
I want to make this system to be cloned on about 2 dozens of same
 machine hardware.

The half-right way is to use dd, with large block size.

When i googled i found Clonesys, and other Nortan's ghost based
progam for same, which seemed a bit lengthy and tricky.

The fully-right way is to use Ghost. The advantage is that you copy the
used parts of the disk only, not the full 40GB.

Can some one tell me about any success stories?

We use Ghost, regulary. Rolled out new desktops accross the office, 4 per
day, 1 person only. Assemble, ghost, copy old data over.

apache-ssl != apache with mod_ssl

Two entirely different beasts here.

to the part where the site says apache-ssl is not mod_ssl) :)

mod_ssl = http://www.modssl.org/
