[ilugd] Esetroot in a cron job???
Hey guys, I use Esetroot to set the background for my Desktop.I use openbox as my window manager on a debian sid 2.6.4. I wrote a small perl script to change my background(www.cs.utexas.edu/users/rmanocha/projects/change_desk.pl). My main aim behind writing this script was to put it into a cron job so that my desktop background can change every hour without me having to fiddle with it. However the cron job does not work.It exits with this error: /etc/cron.hourly/change_desk: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server Esetroot: Unable to open display :0.0 This script works just fine when i execute it from a terminal. The permissions on other scripts and this script in the directory is: -rwx--1 rmanocha rmanocha 80 Apr 15 01:19 change_desk -rwx--1 rmanocha rmanocha 300 Mar 11 14:19 hmailscript the second script works just fine for me and so i am wondering why this script is not working. Is it because the script is executes an another user(thought not likely since no one else has execute permissions on the script). I would really appreciate some help here.I am using Xfree 4.3.0 if that helps. thanks a lot --Rishabh -- Rishabh Manocha http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/rmanocha **Your Quote for the day** I'm defending her honor, which is more than she ever did. ** ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/
[ilugd] PCQLinux and Sound
Guys, I recall LL and some others having some problem with sound on the latest PCQlinux. I got myself a copy and tried out for myself. The sound on kernel 2.4 works fine, but was giving me problems on 2.6. So i decided to fix it. I downloaded the latest alsa drivers, compiled them on 2.4 and got it working with OSS emulation. Since i was going to use the 2.6 kernel also on the same box ( and i didn't want to tweak my /etc/modules.conf), i thought of compiling alsa as modules on 2.6 kernel too. But the 2.6 kernel comes with alsa support in the kernel itself. Luckily the PCQ guys haven't enabled that in the kernel that they shipped (by looking at the accompanying /boot/config-2.6...). So i compiled the alsa as modules for the 2.6 kernel as well (with oss emulation again) and got it working there too. So now as i have it, i have got alsa as modules for 2.4 and 2.6 and the same /etc/modules.conf and sound works with both the kernels. I am more of a compiling person so i compiled everything from source, but i guess the RPMs can work as well. I am not sure about the 5.1 thingie, i believe LL would be able to confirm that. Also, i have no ideas why sound wasn't working earlier, i just used my fix :) Hope this helps. -js PS: on how to compile alsa (url may be wrapped): http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=Quick+Install ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

This may not be the reason for that as it vanished as soon as the system was upgaraded. [ilugd] (fwd) [RHSA-2004:159-01] Updated Subversion packages fix security vulnerability in neon
[Please upgrade if you use subversion or the neon library -- Raju] This is an RFC 1153 digest. (1 message) -- Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Subject: [Full-Disclosure] [RHSA-2004:159-01] Updated Subversion packages fix security vulnerability in neon Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 05:24 -0400 -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 - - Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Updated Subversion packages fix security vulnerability in neon Advisory ID: RHSA-2004:159-01 Issue date:2004-04-15 Updated on:2004-04-15 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: Cross references: Obsoletes: CVE Names: CAN-2004-0179 - - 1. Topic: Updated Subversion packages that fix a vulnerability in neon, exploitable by a malicious DAV server, are now available. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Linux 9 - i386 3. Problem description: Subversion is a concurrent version control system that uses inbuilt code from neon, an HTTP and WebDAV client library. Versions of the neon client library up to and including 0.24.4 have been found to contain a number of format string bugs. An attacker could create a malicious WebDAV server in such a way as to allow arbitrary code execution on the client should a user connect to it using subversion. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0179 to this issue. This update includes a patch to correct this issue, and an upgrade to Subversion 0.27.0, the last version which is compatible with the database schema used by Subversion 0.17.0. Users of Subversion are advised to upgrade to these updated packages. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh [filenames] where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL Certificate Errors, you need to install a version of the up2date client with an updated certificate. The latest version of up2date is available from the Red Hat FTP site and may also be downloaded directly from the RHN website: https://rhn.redhat.com/help/latest-up2date.pxt 5.
