I don't know how you googled for the information, but
it normally gives links to fdisk, Ranish Partition

If you are looking for tools available in Linux, there
are many. You have fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk etc. Plus you
have parted, gparted, qtparted also. Besides you can
look for Ranish Partition Manager and even FIPS. The
later is bundled with most Linux distributions.

We have started an experiment by putting up a #linux-india IRC channel
on irc.freenode.net . Even as I write this at 10:00 AM in the morning,
we have a good discussion going on in the channel. Please do join us.

Bhaskar has written a micro-howto on how you can join us.

micro-howto to show you how to get hooked to #linux-india
 -

The #linux-india IRC channel is up and running on
irc.freenode.net. Please visit or idle in the channel to make it
 better.

This micro-howto will show you how to get hooked to #linux-india:

 1. Get hold of an IRC (internet relay chat) client. Some of the good
 ones are:

bitchx - Advanced Internet Relay Chat client
ircii - Internet Relay Chat client
xchat - IRC client for X similar to AmIRC
xchat-gnome - IRC client for GNOME similar to AmIRC
mozilla-chatzilla - Mozilla Web Browser - irc client
kvirc - Fully scriptable graphical IRC client with plugin support
konversation - user friendly Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for KDE

 2. connect to irc.freenode.net with your favourite IRC client (
please remember not to run irc as *root* unless you are on crack) for
example, if you are running bitchx, type the following on a prompt:
 $bitchx irc.freenode.net

 3. Once you get online, register your nick. First see that your nick
is what you want. if its not, type:
 /nick your_nick

 then register the nick:
 /msg nickserv register your_password

 4. to join the linux-india channel, type :
 /join #linux-india

Thats it. If this is the first time you are using IRC, you can see the
IRC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Help Files
 (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/faq.html) for a more detailed
introduction. For more, ask for help in the channel.

 regards,
 Bhaskar

[ilugd] request to download Clusterknoppix

2004-05-14 Thread Raj Shekhar
Hello!

This is a request to people who have enough bandwidth. I want to test
drive openMosix. A distribution known as Clusterknoppix uses the
modified the OpenMosix kernel. You can just boot up a networked PC and
it will auto detect other nodes running and make itself a part of the
cluster.

Can anyone with good bandwidth download it? Please let me know if this
is possible and how much do I have to pay you for it. The download page
is http://bofh.be/clusterknoppix/download.htm

[ilugd] Kernel Programming

2004-05-14 Thread Mayank Jain

Anyways, comming to the point, can anyone tell me some good books to
start with? I'm a complete newbie as far as kernels are related. And I
have also learnt that programming for kernel 2.6 is quite alot
different than what it is for 2.4 if i wanna start now, i should
start headon wid 2.6. Is that correct?

Pls help as i'm completely lost. Wid books/URL's wid this 2.4/2.6 doubt.

BTW, i'm myself running FC2T3 on kernel 2.6.5 i'm loving it... So
why not programme for it !!!

Cool Idea. I suggest you go through the majority of
the system calls used in the kernel, to get an idea of
what its all about. As for the 8086 code-writing, it
*may be necessary to use it, but in most cases its
not. (I'm trying to find a couple of tutorials on
ASM/C++ myself..)

Some books you could check out are:
*Unix - Unix System Programming Using C++ by Terrence
Chan
*Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment by W.
Richard Stevens
*Microprocessors : 8086 and the Pentium series by
Barry Brey

As for programming for FC2 as yet, its dangerous as
wel l as tough :) Dangerous because FC2 is still under
development, and their cvs's are probably updated every
3 hours, so in case of any bugs you fall into a spot.

I suggest you start out with a couple of 'Learner' OSs
like MINIX or XINU. Apart from being well documented,
they're small in terms of code base, and thus can be
better understood. (Smal when compared to the mammoth
2.6 kernel anyway :)

For 8086 I tried a book From Kenneth J Ayala, and if im not wrong thats from
BPB. That is the best book i have ever read as per Programming is concerned.
And for general Architecture Berry B Brey is good one.

But if you really want to be a Asm Programmer then would suggest you to get
your hands into Protected mode Programming too that would be on 80x86 (not
on 80286) but architecture is little bit confusing, once you get that then
you will enjoy the POWER OF ASM
And try to Involve yourself more to interrupts and hardware side while using
ASM and better if you merge the code in C rather than writing standalone
codes for ASM ,it will save hell lot of time.

It is not a problem with cygwin, it is a feature of most IRC servers
now. To prevent automated attacks, etc on the chat servers, as soon as
you login to the chat server, it first tries to connect to the ident
service on your machine to find out whether you really have a running
account there which is attempting to connect.

Windows desktops dont have ident services. However, windows IRC clients
like mirc starts its own ident services to allow you to authenticate and
login to the chat server.

So the solution is: either you use a chat client which is compliant with
the IRC server like mirc, or run your own ident service on the machine.
I dont know how - for the second option.

I dont know how - for the second option.

i am running my own ident service on WinXP.. but stll the same results

any package suggestion for cygwin ??? that might help

Oh, I don't know. Connecting to irc.freenode.net from IRSSI (the
rocking Perl-enabled client) under Linux:

07:58 Irssi: Connecting to irc.freenode.net [82.96.64.2] port 6667

07:59 - notice[irc.freenode.net] *** Couldn't look up your hostname
07:59 Welcome to the freenode IRC Network OldMonk
07:59 Your host is kornbluth.freenode.net[kornbluth.freenode.net/6667], running
  version dancer-ircd-1.0.35

No ident, no reverse lookup, it still works.

 Hi Raj,
Right now i'm thinking of just automating the
 file-copy process starting installation. But
simultaneously i'm finding out which files the
installer generates, so as the same file can be
generated 'automagically' by my script to make Oracle
 installation a One Click process.

Please note that this might breach the terms of Oracle's licence to you.
Oracle may require that you use the installer, so that it can ensure you
agree to its terms, etc.
