[ilugd] Kernel Programming
Hi ppl, I want to start seriously with Linux internals. I'm thinking of a project based on thin clients as my final yr project, which would surely require these kinda skills. I'm pretty good with C, but no 8086. But anyone here said Linux was all written in C... :-) Anyways, comming to the point, can anyone tell me some good books to start with? I'm a complete newbie as far as kernels are related. And I have also learnt that programming for kernel 2.6 is quite alot different than what it is for 2.4 if i wanna start now, i should start headon wid 2.6. Is that correct? Pls help as i'm completely lost. Wid books/URL's wid this 2.4/2.6 doubt. BTW, i'm myself running FC2T3 on kernel 2.6.5 i'm loving it... So why not programme for it !!! Hey.. I want to start seriously with Linux internals. I'm thinking of a project based on thin clients as my final yr project, which would surely require these kinda skills. I'm pretty good with C, but no 8086. Cool Idea. I suggest you go through the majority of the system calls used in the kernel, to get an idea of what its all about. As for the 8086 code-writing, it *may be necessary to use it, but in most cases its not. (I'm trying to find a couple of tutorials on ASM/C++ myself..) Some books you could check out are: *Unix - Unix System Programming Using C++ by Terrence Chan *Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment by W. Richard Stevens *Microprocessors : 8086 and the Pentium series by Barry Brey As for programming for FC2 as yet, its dangerous as wel l as tough :) Dangerous because FC2 is still under development, and their cvs's are probably updated every 3 hours, so in case of any bugs you fall into a spot. I suggest you start out with a couple of 'Learner' OSs like MINIX or XINU. Apart from being well documented, they're small in terms of code base, and thus can be better understood. RE: [ilugd] Kernel Programming
For 8086 I tried a book From Kenneth J Ayala, and if im not wrong thats from BPB. That is the best book i have ever read as per Programming is concerned. And for general Architecture Berry B Brey is good one. But if you really want to be a Asm Programmer then would suggest you to get your hands into Protected mode Programming too that would be on 80x86 (not on 80286) but architecture is little bit confusing, once you get that then you will enjoy the POWER OF ASM And try to Involve yourself more to interrupts and hardware side while using ASM and better if you merge the code in C rather than writing standalone codes for ASM ,it will save hell lot of time. -Dhruv -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Viksit Gaur Sent: Friday, May 14, 2004 6:44 PM To: The Linux-Delhi mailing list Subject: Re: [ilugd] Kernel Programming Hey..
