Would spelling correctly be too much effort, too? You have excellent
grammer and puncuation, why use M$ instead of MS?

It looks petty when we misspell the name of our opponents in a debate.

It is really an eye-opener...
Are we thinking about what/how our community is doing to give computer
users a choice (In this case MCD) to opt for an OS which gives much more

I use M$ as I have a DSL connection with a USB modem and configuring the

Title: glibc: Insecure tempfile handling in catchsegv script
  Date: October 21, 2004
  Bugs: #66358
ID: 200410-19

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Synopsis
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

The catchsegv script in the glibc package is vulnerable to symlink
attacks, potentially allowing a local user to overwrite arbitrary
files with the rights of the user running the script.

Background
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

glibc is a package that contains the GNU C library.

Affected packages
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

---
 Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected
---
  1  sys-libs/glibc  <=3D 2.3.4.20040808*>=3D 2.2.5-r9
 *>=3D 2.3.2-r12
 *>=3D 2.3.3.20040420-r2
 *>=3D 2.3.4.20040619-r2
  >=3D 2.3.4.20040808-r1

Description
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

The catchsegv script creates temporary files in world-writeable
directories with predictable names.

Impact
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

A local attacker could create symbolic links in the temporary files
directory, pointing to a valid file somewhere on the filesystem. When
catchsegv script is called, this would result in the file being
overwritten with the rights of the user running the utility, which
could be the root user.

Workaround
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

All glibc users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge sync

# emerge -pv sys-libs/glibc
# emerge sys-libs/glibc

Did you see what the kerala govt is doing?
Another thing that can be done is to have NASSCOM go after the Ritchie
Street / Lamington Road / Nehru Place etc petty assemblers who are doing
this, and force them to stop bundling pirated windows software with PCs
that they sell.

Recent news = Ritchie street in Madras rapidly emptied itself of pirated

pirates in jail.

Now back to Kerala -

Kerala kickstarts Linux usage with 100-plus help centres
By Anand Parthasarathy
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 21. Everybody talks about it, but nobody does
anything about it — ran American humorist Mark Twain's quip about the
weather. It can just as well be applied to the dozens of well-meaning
but impractical initiatives attempting to help lay computer users in
India migrate from proprietary systems to the free-and-open environment
of Linux — if they so choose.

LiTE centres
Now, appropriately enough, from the 100 per cent literacy State comes a
down-to-earth initiative that may yet prove Mark Twain — and nay-sayers
of open software — wrong: A low key ceremony in the office of the Chief
Minister, Oommen Chandy, on Wednesday, saw the launch of a programme
anchored by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT),
where 107 computer training institutes spread across all 14 districts of
Kerala have been beefed up as `Linux Technology Extension (LiTE) centres.'

Crucial service
Every centre would soon provide customers with practical help in
configuring their PCs around the Linux operating system — a crucial
service since professional help is often required in finding the
necessary `drivers' that will make popular peripherals such as printers,
CD/DVD drivers, webcams, scanners and modems, work smoothly with Open
Source software.

Training programme
The centres will also provide training in Linux applications, in
installing the `OpenOffice' suite and will sell for a nominal cost
C-DIT-developed tools such as the `Kairali Linux' distribution,
localised for the Malayalam font, as well as one of the first Indian
language primers on Free Software, the Malayalam-language book,
`Swathanthra Softwayerum GNU/Linuxum,' which is priced at just Rs.55.

`Practical problems'
The author of the book and C-DIT Director, Achuthsankar S. Nair, told
The Hindu : "We feel the debate on free versus proprietary software is
best left to academics.

For ordinary people who for whatever reason — economic or ideological —
want to migrate to Linux, there are a lot of practical problems and many
hardware-related irritants remain. We would like to make migration
easier — particularly for the thousands in Kerala who are left out of
the computer revolution because there are few tools in Malayalam."

A small but dedicated Open Source Technology (OST) Team at C-DIT is
currently training the resource persons who will soon fan out to the
100-plus LiTE service centres in the State. Many of the trainees
insisted on starting their training on Saraswathi pooja day during
Dussera this weekend.

"We are making our Open Source `Vidyarambham' this year," one LiTE
centre head said.

Instructional CDs
Earlier, C-DIT also helped the Kerala State IT Mission with
instructional CDs to back the Akshaya e-literacy programme. User
enthusiasm forced the centre to quickly complement the original
Windows-based version with another based on its own Kairali Linux version.

Malayalam version
It has also created a Malayalam version of a popular CD —
Chithrakkuduka— containing thousands of `ethnic' clip art pictures and
music tracks with an ethnic Kerala flavour.

Hey, we came first :-)
So do you think the Indian Linux community can and should be doing
something about this?
Talk to me. I have a budget, and no ideas.
In Singapore, I have 2 Linux companies that provide free email support for
our PCs, they benefit by advertising, and some of these will convert to a
paid support contract. Hopefully, some customers will hire these companies
for commercial Linux app stuff as well. We support them by giving them
hardware and other assistance.

The easy way would be for me to put in a flyer mentioning the LUG mailing
list, however, this will not work till members have access to the hardware
and distribution we pre-load.

Ideas, please.

[ilugd] What is your view about Linux pcs in India?

2004-10-21 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
[x-posted]
Now I know this is a controversial topic with many different angles, but I
felt this should be discussed to some length here.

On a recent visit to Nehru Place, I was at first pleasantly surprised to
see big stacks of LG MyPC branded boxes. I was told that they were selling
very well. Costing between Rs.15k-20k, these machines are sold with some
Linux distribution preloaded. I asked around and found out that each and
every box that got sold in most of these shops at Nehru Place, went through
a process of "cleansing" to make the box suitable for the customers. The
cleansing process consisted of formatting the hard disk, installing Window
XP or Windows 98, with MS Office and Norton Antivirus.

I am not sure whether such an activity should be ignored by the Linux
community in India. Yes, this has been reported before [1] in the
international press.

My feeling is that this whole business of wiping out Linux and installing
Windows is actually hurting the image of Linux significantly in the general
population. The hardware resellers are themselves telling the customer that
Linux wont work for them, and that they will "take care" that the customers
do not "suffer". The customers get an idea of Linux as something that
should not be touched, and that Windows is better.

This is weird because the only thing that these kind of customers (home and
SOHO) would probably miss out is probably the latest version of Yahoo
messenger with audibles .. or some latest games.

If the computer maker (LG in this case, but you have HP/Compaq too now
along with Esys) is interested in having the customer use Linux (unlikely
'coz they are mostly box-pushers), they should be concerned with this
phenomenon. If the computer maker is not bothered, well I think we should
be. It is definitely not good to have Linux associated with these kind of
activities.

So do you think the Indian Linux community can and should be doing
something about this?

All these activities, kind of dents the dream of having preloaded "Linux on
the desktop for everyone" that we try to sell at the LUG
meets/talks/exhibitions.

I have a feeling that you got to use ATDI and not ATDT for an ISDN
connection. Try adding the following under "[Dialer Defaults]" section of
wvdial.conf:

Dial Command = ATDI

2004-10-21 Thread Linux Lingam
[snip]

just a quick note: i stepped into the room allocated for our ilug-d
meet at soc this afternoon. it is a large room. can happily seat about
70+ people. waah! it has a working projector (so far) that connects to
laptops and desktops. i even saw a pc lurking somewhere, though have
not been able to check if it could boot with a knoppix cd. i doubt it
has a gnulinux in a dual-partition yet. (but that will eventually
happen...).

noted that a few, perhaps 5 to 6 SoC students, who are debian newbies,
wish to attend the meet, so explained to them that some things have
been promised for newbies at the meet. aagey unkee kismat.

the venue also has a wonderful campus, so if you wanna hang out for a
short while on those large, open steps near the building, i suppose
that's possible too. but i guess the action will be in the room. arjun
asthana, am thrilled you delivering a talk. wonderful!

like
processor type, uptime, disk space, load balance, performance, etc..for
various platforms.

I have googled for such script and came accross a few. I have a concern
though. The scripts
reads the various system file, like roc/uptime, /proc/version and executes
command like
execute_program('who', '-q') to get the info.

Now that my script will run in web environment I can antisipate various
restrictions on the web server. Is there a work around? Any pointers or hint
will be appriciated.

Also the scripts need PHP var safe_mode = off. Now will this be OK with the
various web space providers?

BTW, how can I get info regarding load balance and stuff...
Many thanks for your time and thoughts.
