Package: cabextract
Vulnerability : missing directory sanitising
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2004-0916
Debian Bug : 277522

The upstream developers discovered a problem in cabextract, a tool to
extract cabinet files. The program was able to overwrite files in
upper directories. This could lead an attacker to overwrite arbitrary
files.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 0.2-2b.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.1-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your cabextract package.

Re: [ilugd] COMMERCIAL::System Administrator(level 1) -Urgent

2004-10-27 Thread Dhruba Roy
Looks like you enjoy reading which does not correlate to system
administration. I would say - to negate someone's view in a professional
way does help in building your management skills and managing the system
in this imperfect world is part of the management skills. In fact system
administration is one part of my job and I know how much effort is needed,
still I would say there is not a single failsafe server available in this
world no matter how perfect the system administrator is. I would like to
emphasis - mate this is not the end of the world. There is life beyond
system administration and talking about business - finding fault with
others is not our business unless your business interest is effected by
someone's error. Do you know even the best scientist in the world has not
denied of God's non-existence and still the human world says God created
us because no one knows the right answer. You may pretend to be an atheist
but you recall God when your system administration skill fails,
immediately you are recharged to accomplish your feat. Then you forget
about God don't you think it's hypocricy. Yes human beings are most
intelligent (including the IIT student) but we are the only animal who
fight with each other and still cannot live without one another what a
paradox. Too much self grooming to perfection in system administration is
not good, you may lose the skills to feed yourself independently. May so
happen you have to be fed as you were when you were a baby. This is just
what is call law of average. At this point stop bragging and help your
countrymen to bring prosperity to the nation. Please don't be devisive
and come out of your insular world to beat the british attitude of
yesteryears of "divide and rule". You know if this prctice prevails some
outsider would reap the benefit of your hard work. Incidently I would like
to thank you for educating me because I am a student.

Now something on linux -- do you know why linux penguin can servive from
it's predator the polar bear; because they are poles apart. Don't you
worry as long as the penguin is alive system administration is secured.

Have fun mate.

2004-10-26 ANOTHER SECURITY HOLE, fixed in PuTTY 0.56

PuTTY 0.56, released today, fixes a serious security hole which can
allow a server to execute code of its choice on a PuTTY client
connecting to it. In SSH2, the attack can be performed before host key
verification, meaning that even if you trust the server you think you
are connecting to, a different machine could be impersonating it and
could launch the attack before you could tell the difference. We
recommend everybody upgrade to 0.56 as soon as possible.

That's two really bad holes in three months. I'd like to apologise to
all our users for the inconvenience.

Umm, not really. At any given time a CPU can handle one process.
Other processes that are ready to run have to wait for their turn.
Note that many processes aren't ready to run -- e.g. those waiting for
disk I/O to complete, stopped in a sleep or on a semaphore, etc. The
load average is the measure of the average number of ready to run
processes waiting for their turn at the CPU over the past 1, 5 and 15
minutes.

In general, lower load averages mean lower load on the CPU. However,
lower load averages could also mean that your system is overpowered --
don't let your boss see consistent load averages of 0.05 on your
servers over 2 years -- s/he will want to know why you requested a
quad-Xeon server with 2GB RAM when a 486 with 16MB could have done the
job just as well :)

High load averages could indicate all sorts of problems including
badly-written programs, slow CPU, not enough RAM or slow disks. I
personally investigate consistent load averages of over 1 on servers I
manage. However, I'm not a fanatic about it -- I've also seen servers
perform fine with consistent load averages of up to 5 or so in the
long run.

Regards,

The load average is the ratio of amount of CPU processes want to access at a
given time with actual CPU processing power available. Therefore it should
be less than 1.

Re: Re: [ilugd] Getting system load and performance infomation

2004-10-27 Thread Nishant Kavi
Look at the man page (UNIX) for uptime, and that explains the three metrics as - they
are the ... load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, that still begs the explanation to the question - What is the load?

According to Dr. Neil Gunther, a recognized expert on performance management and
capacity planning "The Load Average triplet is intended to provide you with some kind
of information about how much work has been done on the system (especially on CPU) in
the recent past (1 minute), the past (5 minutes) and the distant past (15 minutes)".

Dr. Gunther's fact findings on the same subject can be found at the following URLs:

So what do you mean ? Don't you term posting to the list a blunder when the
original poster clearly mentioned to reply him offlist. Does such minor
mistakes make a person eligible for the post of a System Administrator ?
A System Administrator is one upon whom the whole IT back bone of the business
is based on.

I don't know much about what God did. But what I indeed do know is that, we
humans are the master-piece on this planet. One of the greatest creations.
Perfection is a self grooming process. It'll vary from person to person as to
how much keen he is towards his perfection level.

I'm not sure and also don't agree to your statement that "the day you are a
teacher you skill is lost". I don't think once being a teacher would stunt
your skills. You are part of the list. You suggest/teach newbies with many
replies. That means you're a teacher too. Has that stunted your skills ??

As far as the IIT-ian is concerned ( Don't call him a poor chap), no personal
grievances. The job poster would judge for the break for him.
