[ilugd] ssh on a different virtual console

2007-08-22 Thread Vikas Rawal
I would like to run an x-server on a separate virtual console
(control+alt+f12), open an x-term there, ssh to the server, and start
gnome. That should give me access to two different machines on two
virtual consoles (my local machine on ctrl+alt+f7 and remote machine
on ctrl+alt+f12).

This approach is explained on
http://www.linux-tip.net/cms/content/view/302/26/

I tried to follow instructions in this article.

The main operative steps are as follows

#Start an x-server on virtual console 12. I am able to do it though
#only by becoming root.
X :12.0 vt12 21 /dev/null

#Start x-term on virtual console 12 and make an ssh connection. This
#command does not work for me.

xterm -display :12.0 -e ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Would someone be able to say what is wrong with this?

I am trying to do it on my ubuntu machine.

If you already have X running and a desktop environment running on F7,
you can start a new one on F8 (from the console in F1, for example)
using:

  startx -- :1

So, for F12, it is

  startx -- :5

To run a different desktop environment/window manager, I believe you
need to change ~/.xinitrc (check with any online search engine for
more info).

If you already have X running and a desktop environment running on F7,
you can start a new one on F8 (from the console in F1, for example)
 using:

This opens the desktop environment of the local machine. I was
thinking of starting it from the remote machine so that I would get
the start menu etc of the remote machine.

But may be all this is not worth it after all. For example, it will
perhaps mess up things on F7 as well because the DISPLAY variable will
now be directed to F12. It did something like that when I did
startx -- :5 from F1. I was unable to open emacs on F7 after that. I
promptly shut the x-server on F12 and restarted it on F7:)

A non-starter perhaps. Sorry.

[ilugd] sizing benchmark for NX

2007-08-22 Thread Karanbir Singh
hi,

during the talk at JNU last month, one issue that came up was the sizing model
-
how much resource you need to throw into the backend infrastructure to make the
thin-client model work using NX/freenx.

I finally had the time to do some testing and it seems that a machine of the
following spec, is 'enough' to run between 20 - 22 Desktop Clients.

2 AMD Opteron 252
8 Gigs of RAM
6 500GB sata-3 drives, ext3 ( on a 3ware 9560, in a raid-0+1 )

a DesktopClient was basically someone who was running all these at the same
time:

Firefox - 6 to 8 tabs open
OO-Calc - 200 KB doc open
a Couple of Terminal windows
Thunderbird
GAIM
GIMP - with a 5 MB file open
And the usual gnome panel stuff, like the weather applet, a couple of resource
monitoring applets

Depending on I/O requirements you can actually scale the same machine upto 40
odd users if they dont hit the drives that much.

Hope this helps ( sorry, i didnt get the name of the person who was asking this
question.. )

access logs at the complainer, and say you are the only person who
uses FF; go change your OS and browser, it is easier for you to

He simply does not have that option if there a significant number of

That was me.

Your description of the client use, is equivalent or more of the
Knowledge Worker described in the competitions literature. On the
face of it, I think the performances match.

If your data is on the same server as the NXserver, your users are
doing more I/O than would be typical in a normal working environment.
In most cases, users data would be on a NAS / SAN setup. So the
CPU/DMA load gets transferred to network. I do'nt know how much
difference does that make.

I have recently installed NXClients on a larger number of machines. I
am waiting for an opportunity to grab a decent server to proceed with
the testing.

Thanks for your inputs.
