2007-10-31 Thread Linux Lingam
dear all,

so looks like the community has gravitated towards upcoming.yahoo.com
and that solves our problem.
one final issue: exactly what is the url for discovering all foss and
foss-related events in dinai at upcoming.yahoo.com

for instance, when i visit the site, it naturally defaults to 'delhi'
as my location, and lists events i am not interested in.

on searching for 'foss' events in 'india' i get a list of two events,
foss.in and the chennai event. the bangalore barcamp is not listed.

sigh! signal to noise ratio needs soem work. one single url for the
foss community will do wonders.

philip, what's your take?

[ilugd] [Commercial] Why not enroll in FOSS India Awards?

2007-10-31 Thread Niraj Sahay
Hi,

Are you working on any free software or open source (FOSS) project? Do
you know anyone who is?

There's a great opportunity for all Indian FOSS contributors to showcase
their work at the national level, and perhaps global too! Plus, the
development team (or individual) can get a minimum cash prize of Rs 25,000!

But, there's more to it than just cash prize. The winners will get
exclusive coverage in LINUX For You magazine, and openITis.com (aka
linuxforu.com). Which in turn could mean: (a) more media coverage for
the project and its developers, (b) publicity amongst targeted
customers, and (c) more contributors getting attracted to the project.

Launched with an initial kitty of Rs 5 lakhs, the FOSS India Awards aim
to recognise India's top 20 FOSS projects. The LINUX For You team is
working with FOSII (Forum for Open Source Initiatives in India) on this
venture.

The registration for FOSS India Awards is FREE! All one has to do to
register is to visit http://www.openitis.com/awards/ and fill in the
two-minute form. Registration for FOSS India Awards are open till 15th
December '07. The awards will be announced during Open Source India Week
(aka LinuxAsia 2008) during the 2nd week of February '08.

Please do forward this message to anyone whom you believe is working on
a FOSS project, and is a good candidate.

Let's prove to the World that India contributes to FOSS too...

Best Wishes!
LINUX For You team

In you case .gstreamer-x.y *may* be the culprit.

I concur. See if things improve after you move the gnome
.config dirs out of the way. You might also want to run alsaconf as
root -- Alsaconf is a simple shell script which tries to detect the
sound cards on your system and writes a suitable configuration file for
ALSA. It will try to guess what GNU/Linux distribution you’re running,
and will act accordingly to the standards of that distribution, if
  specific support is available.

you just need to add freed2k8, gnunify, and a few other events.

one small suggestion: the light orange text is not readable against

Yes, it is just the font dependent issue. I just changed the font to Lohit

now same rendering in both cases. I thought one of these renderers used in Psi

I 'm able to ping my GATEWAY and even access a web page on

Forget the official Sify client for Linux. I have wasted a considerable
percentage of my youth trying to get that damn script to work. No I kid you
not. I later found this piece of C code, called Super Sify or something,
written by a guy called Bharat Bhushan or something, which compiled and
seemed to work well (I use the term work well loosely, out of
consideration for the fact that for a mere piece of software, written by
mortals, trying to squeeze entire bytes out of the constipated Sify lines is
an impossible task to begin with). Google for Sify Linux clients for more
up to date information. Or try using the Official Mac client for Sify. It's
written in Java and is actually cross platform.

Though I would recommend you forget all I said in the previous paragraph and
ditch Sify altogether for a semi decent broadband connection. Seriously. You
can thank me later.

one small suggestion: the light orange text is not readable against
the white background. i'd recommend make the bullet-dots orange, and
make the text black. swap the colors.

[ilugd] Wal-Mart sells $199 Linux computer

2007-10-31 Thread Lokesh Bhog
NEW YORK - Linux, the free operating system that's a perpetual underdog in the
desktop market, is showing up in computers in Wal-Mart stores this week for the
first time.

About 600 Wal-Mart stores will carry the $199 Linux-powered Green gPC made
by Everex of Taiwan, Wal-Mart said. It was available online on Wednesday.
