I have an IPOD. I use the free rockbox software on it (I did
have to build a cross compiling tool chain on my machine). Plays
oggs. Works as a 60GB USB key. What more can one ask?

LDAP is LDAP, so you really shouldn't have any issues using the
Squirrelmail database for authenticating any LDAP-aware app. As far as
I know Squirrelmail doesn't use any weirdo attributes, so you should be
able to use standard attributes for user ID, password, etc.

Re: [ilugd] [Solved] Firefox problem

2007-11-30 Thread Linux Lingam
whoa! i dunno what's wrong with firefox. a little more than yesterday, i saw
an update, when i installed it, the update manager warned me that this was
not signed in or something. pre-occuped with my work i foolishly cared not
to read the warning and slapped that ok button with my mouseclick.
i kept workin.
in the morning around 10 am when i got back to work and booted my machine,
this thing became slower and more unresponsive than me after a lazy
afternoon lunch of makki di roti, sarson da saag tey makhan.

i had my hands off the keyboard patiently waiting for 15 to 20 minutes for
the hardisk to stop spinnin', the system to get back to me. it seldom did. i
coud not even get a console on F2 or 3 without atleast a 5-minute wait.
those figures aren't exaggerations. alarmed, i ran top that took ages too. i
noticed openoffice, amarok, and firefox were swapping themselves in and out
like atm cards in a lone kiosk on diwali eve. that's all they could do:
dance. took me another 5 minutes to kil them. been plagued with the problem
since the whole day.

finally, have just booted into faithful ol' breezy badger to restore
normlacy in my work. gosh! badger looks so archaic. the apps are so old.
yeesh!

i wonder exactly what happened to my system. top does not show anything
wrong.

That's how it always goes. Whenever you find a bug, disable extensions one
by one until
the bug is no more. Firebug has recently caused me a lot of problem. It made

my web developer toolbar, stumbleupon toolbar, del.icio.us buttons
irresponsive.
Firebug didn't cause problems ever before. I think its because of a recent
update.

The problem is still not fixed. If I enable Firebug, the toolbars go bad
again.

Not necessarily. My ipod was rendered unusable for
about 3-4 months before I could get it working.
Basically I used amarok on Ubuntu to transfer some
files , and later as soon as I used to connect the
Ipod to a win machine, Itunes used to crash. Later on,
even amarok stopped detecting the ipod. Even gtkpod
did not recognize the it.

Finally I used some freeware and deleted all the songs
from the ipod, and now I can use it using gtkpod.

Moral of the story - Stick to one application for
transferring any songs.

It depends on the firmware version. All versions except the latest
one are supported by Amarok, libgpod, rythmbox et. al. and you can
safely use them to create the iTunesDB. If you use the iPod with
Linux only, i.e. never try to "upgrade" to the latest firmware via
iTunes, the iPod will happily sing for you everafter.

Cheers,

P.S. In any case, it is possible to restore the iPod to "factory
defaults" erasing everything on the disk. Even if the initialization

[ilugd] amarok on ubuntu wants to initialize ipod

2007-11-30 Thread Linux Lingam
dear all,

have always heard that ipods work beautifully with ubuntu and with amarok.
so here's this fresh-mint sealed classic 80gb ipod on my desk, nah! not
mine. i wouldn't buy that overpriced undersized pineapple.

i connect the ipod, and rhythmbox wants to take over. i quit it, and open
the ipod icon on my desktop. transfer a sample file *.mp3 to the root folder
of ipod, disconnect, and find this cutesy musical hard-disk doesn't even
know of its existence, so i'm metaphorically listenin' to the sound of
silence.

my friend tells me it is imperative to download and install iTunes 7. blah
blah. comment ignored. some quick googling, and i discover after quitting
rhythmbox, launching amarok, open settings>media device. take the drop-down
menu, and request amar singh to handle the pretentious-sounding 'apple ipod
media device'. jay leno, interview how many ipod folks on the street know
the apple ipod is an apple ipod media device. :-)

a click on 'auto-detect' shows up the smartsy apple hard-disk. i click
'accept', and then in the task-bar, dutifully click 'connect'.
this is where things get very very interesting. amarok politely informs me:
it has found no iTunesDB, so should amarok initialize the ipod?

this is dodgy. would roger walters alter his lyrics to sing 'another brick
in the pod' ?
i panic, unplug the ipod, pack it back in its velvet black box and
shrink-wrap peel,
and scamper with my touch-typing to this mailing list.

what gives?
anybody, jimi hendrix wants to know are you experienced?
have you ever connected a spankin' new pod straight out of the box to the
linux thing
and got it singin' the blue-screen of death metal?

heck! why am i thinkin' of ankur rohtagi?
am i?

For me:
Mozilla Firefox on works on Windows without problems
whereas it does freeze on Kubuntu Linux, at times, for
unknown reasons. I have been invoked to submit a bug
report by it so-called 'assitant/agent' on Kubuntu,
but not on Windows.

However, do note that the Firefox that I use has been

Hi,

We're looking for a CSS/XHTML developer with experience (maybe a couple of
live sites) in making XHTML Trasntional 1.0 compliant templates.

The applicant could be from a programming or design background - either is
fine and useful for us - although we do prefer someone from a programming
background with interest or experience in PHP and PHP-based open source
Content Management Systems, such as TYPO3, Drupal, Joomla, others.

Remuneration

Would depend upon the speed and diversity of skills and experience you bring
on. However, Srijan is quite decent with pay scales.
