i have not been in any such meeting so i do not have much idea. you can
contact me regarding the organizing the meeting. I need few parameters that
what should you expect from venue? really this would encourage us a lot and
at the same time we can discuss that in what way we can collaborate.

 Hi,
Have been very busy the last few days, but here is a quick
 reply.

The setting up of a IIT-Delhi LUG sounds very good. As others
have also done, I would encourage you to work with ILUG-Delhi,
and other LUGs in the NCR region. ILUG-Delhi is actively
involved with people at JNU, and extending contacts with
IIT-Delhi would definitely be interesting. In fact, it might
not be a bad idea to have an ILUG-Delhi meeting at IIT, say
 next Sunday, the 27th.

[ilugd] port forwarding

2008-01-19 Thread Vikas Rawal
I want to temporarily open ssh access to my machine behind a huawei
smartax 882 router (BSNL broadband). I followed instructions at the
following link to set up a virtual server on the router.

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Huawei/SmartAX-MT882/SSH.htm

Is there a way of testing if the router is now allowing traffic across
that port? (Sorry, I do not know if the terms I used are correct.)

I still cannot access the machine from outsite the router. I have
configured by ssh server (using webmin) to allow connection to
forwarded ports. Port scan on the machine shows that ssh port is open.

Port scan on the router does not show the corresponding port to be
open (is it supposed to?).

I will be thankful for any pointers.

Tried nmap on your external IP?
Also, there's Sheild's Up on grc.com which can check open ports.

All your supported hardware should be detected automatically. For
anything that is not fully supported by an open-source driver, come
back and ask here. Possible devices are wifi and graphics...

hi siddharth
welcome in world of LINUX
there is no needb to insall drivers as you do while installing in windods.
actually most of the essential drivers are there in the installation disc,
so there is no need of it...
but while installing some of the hardwares like wi-fi/external cards to your
system you will be needing .deb packs for it...

also you can install your hardware by using driver CD which you use in
windods, but there will be interfae needed then, like wine, cedega etc (these
are some of the interfacing softwares which run in LINUX environment)..

your are always welcome for more depth knowledge

Also check the firewall settings in the router. Try disabling
firewall, setup port-forwarding and test remote access. Remember to
enable firewall after testing this and then configure firewall to
allow the ssh service to access port 22 (or whichever port you want it
to access).

Try out the live CD and check if everything works out of the box. If
there is something that does not work, check out solutions to the
problem on ubuntuforums.org. You can even try out the solution while
