Usually free things would not be as reliable as, say their paid
counterparts, but in this case, yes, it would be as reliable, if not
more. However you would do well to study in advance what exactly you
need to support before deciding on a particular distro. Each distro has
its particular strength and the community would be glad to help you. Be
also aware that in India it is difficult to find well advertised
qualified linux talent for your queries. If you would be kind as to
mention what sort of applications you plan using, I am sure the veteran
members here would be eager to give their input.

Cheers and peace.

 Buy RHEL or SLED.

Or, as a special favour, I'll be willing to accept money orders,
cash, or checks for any Linux distribution. Feel free to send in any
amount, starting at Rs 1, up to whatever value you feel you want to
derive from Linux. I can let you feel like you are using a OS worth a
 crore, if you want.

It would depend on which part of the world you are in. And, its not
that you are going to stop breathing just because it is polluted.

Anyways, the context of free was used with emphasis on freedom.

Are you willing to accept an opinion from someone you do not
know? I mean, if we all say Linux is reliable, how much can you rely on
this statement? Secondly, the answer to the reliability of Linux/Apache
would depend on your definition of reliability -- the term is
sufficiently vague to render answers mostly meaningless. Lastly, the
term FOSS covers so much ground that an answer is not feasible, even if
there is a concrete definition of reliability. What are you looking to
do? A Linux server, standing alone, and doing little, can stay up for
years. Apache servers have stood up to the worst the 'net has had to
 throw at them.

I strongly suggest you look at Eric Raymond's essay on how to ask
questions intelligently; the answer you get would be far more useful.

It depends on how you define reliable. A solid piece
of software with defects that are the same, if not
less than something you would pay for? Then yes, Linux
is as reliable as Windows. If you're looking for
customer support like Microsoft provides, you'd be
happy with Linux too, since companies like Red Hat,
SuSE and others provide such support services - for a
price.

That said, the world's most popular web server
(Apache) was written, and is mostly deployed on Linux
(or similar OSes). And yes, most people who run it use
the free version because there IS no paid version to
speak of.
